A typical day on a yoga safari retreat would compose of the following itinerary:
Karibu Tanzania - Welcome to Tanzania. On arrival at the airport, you will be met by one of Leadwood Expeditions' staff members. After greet and meet services, he will escort you to your accommodation in Arusha (approximately 60 kilometers), ready for the safari tomorrow. The lodge is perched on the slopes of Mount Meru with a magnificent view of the mountain.
After breakfast, set off on a safari with your private car and driver to Tarangire National Park (approximately 120 kilometers). Named for the river that nourishes the wildlife of a vast ecosystem, Tarangire is home to elephant, zebra, wildebeest, gazelle, buffalo, eland, waterbuck, lion, giraffe, onyx and an unsurpassed diversity of birds.
From June to November, masses of wildlife congregate around the river, but the park is a stronghold for big game year-round. Take your first game drive before retiring to your beautifully designed lodge, hidden among ancient baobab trees and giant rock kopjes within the park.
After breakfast, you depart for Lake Manyara National Park (approx 90 kilometers) with en-route views. Nestling at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment, a beautiful park, Lake Manyara contains a diverse range of habitats and topographical features ranging from the rift wall, ground water forest, acacia woodlands, and open grasslands to the shores of Lake Manyara and the lake itself.
Have afternoon game viewing in the park searching for the diverse flora and fauna of the park. There are some 350 different bird species in the park. The park provides sanctuary to a variety of animals such as the gazelle, impala, buffalo, wildebeest, hyena, baboon, giraffe, hippo and the famous tree-climbing lions that are unique to the Lake. The park is generally recognized for its incredible beauty.
The legendary Serengeti Plain is your destination today (210 kilometers), a vast rolling plain whose sparse vegetation allows for some of the best wildlife viewings in the world. The annual migration of wildebeest and zebra is one of the park’s great attractions, but throughout the year the Serengeti is excellent for seeing predators such as lion, leopard, and cheetah, along with elephant, giraffe, hyena, hippo, rhino, and many varieties of antelopes and birds. Depending with the animal movement, you can arrange packed lunch or go back to the lodge for a hot lunch. The evening is free to rest.
If you rise early, you can take a morning game drive through the park to see the nocturnal predators returning from their nightly hunt and very active animals waking up in the early morning light. Depending on the time of year and the migration of the herds, you can expect to see wildebeest, lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, monkeys, baboons, hippos, rhinos, antelopes, birds and other species.
You enjoy morning and afternoon game viewing drives on the vast Serengeti plains. In the early morning and evening light, the Serengeti landscape is stunningly beautiful. The Serengeti ecosystem supports the greatest remaining concentration of plains game in Africa, including more than three million large mammals. The park is one that can never disappoint. One is spoilt by the variety of bird and wildlife species in this game reserve.
Depending on the wildlife movement, you can have a hot lunch at the camp or enjoy picnic lunch packets.
After breakfast, you descend some 610 meters into the crater, which is home to an abundance of wildlife and a photogenic paradise, for a full day of game viewing drive with picnic lunch at a private scenic site (hippos pool). Ngorongoro Crater is the largest intact caldera in the world teams with an abundance of wildlife permanently resident on the crater floor. Pride of lions, herds of Cape buffalo, impala, Thompson gazelles, rhino, golden and black-backed jackal, zebra, cheetah, leopard and the spotted hyena freely roam on the crater floor plains.
Unmatched for its natural variety and breathtaking beauty, there are few places on earth where such a tremendous diversity of landscapes exist inside a region this size. Apart from its wildlife riches, the crater is also home to hundreds of bird species, refreshing in the small lakes in the crater floor. In the afternoon, ascend and spend the night close to Ngorongoro.
The day you drive to Arusha and you will have a few hours for shopping in Arusha. In the afternoon, you will drive to Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) for your international flight back home or continue with other plans.
Tanzania is Africa’s visual masterpiece. It is a country of magnificent natural splendor, astounding wildlife, seductive beaches, charming ancient towns, ancient archaeological sites, and geological wonders. This lush East African Eden is the stunning backdrop to one of nature’s most remarkable events when it hosts the spectacular Great Migration of one million wild animals. The herds move across the Serengeti Plains and charge through the treacherous crocodile-infested Mara River to reach the Mara Nature Reserve in Kenya.
Africa’s highest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro, rises from lush, grassy plains and towers over the land. Its snow-capped peak is a sight to behold. Climbing Kilimanjaro is surprisingly easy, and standing on the roof of Africa is a life-changing experience.
There are numerous game parks and reserves available for tourists to visit for an adventure. One of the best-known ones is, of course, the Serengeti National Park, where you will find the Great Migration starting and traversing until it makes its way across the Mara river. You will not only get to witness the Great Migration in the area but also the Big Five and other wildlife. There won’t be a shortage of things to see when you’re at the Serengeti National Park.
Another popular tourist location is the Ngorongoro Crater. This crater is a perfect caldera that used to be a supervolcano that erupted years ago and caved in to form what it is now. It’s a spectacular sight to see as you won’t find anything quite like it just anywhere in the world. Get to experience a picnic lunch while observing the wildlife around you go about their daily routine.
Lake Manyara is another location which should be considered for a stop on a trip to Tanzania. When you’re at Lake Manyara, you will be able to roam around and see its famous tree-climbing lions, giraffes, elephants, flamingos and warthogs amongst others. It’s truly a beautiful scenery to explore.
You’ll also be able to take a break from enjoying a safari adventure to spend time in local tribes learning about their culture and tradition. Experience a different lifestyle to that of yours!
