Expert tip: This is one of the most popular yoga retreats offered in Sri Lanka.
Join the team at Lanka Yoga for an honest, beautiful, and restful holiday. Enjoy breathtaking nature, great people, and fun, accessible yoga practice for this deeply relaxing six-night, seven-day program. Lanka Yoga is a hideaway set on stunning Koggala Lake. It gives the impression of living on the edge of an endless national park where one can truly enjoy nature. Wildlife and biodiversity abound, perfect for birdwatching.
Lanka Yoga is sparse and has an almost uninterrupted view of pristine Koggala lake from each room. You will see nothing but green and blue with the occasional crocodile, a swarm of eagles, and other wildlife that will make it feel like you are living in a national park. Located on the water’s edge, they offer a calm alternative to the sometimes-hectic nature of the beachside options. Their generously spaced venue has open plan living, nooks and crannies, yoga spaces, gardens, trees, a substantial vegetable garden, and more. There are three buildings on site.
The villa they inherited and have modified to have five large bedrooms, an open plan of living and eating, a decking and infinity pool overlooking the lake, and many hidden nooks and crannies. The second building is their hidden guest block under the grass next to the villa, here four smaller individual rooms look out over the lake with a generous balcony area. Their third building is a yoga shala building. Where above their own little living space is a purpose build 110-square-meter yoga shala, storage, office, communal bathrooms, and massage space.
These are two massive upstairs rooms with a huge balcony in the villa that holds up to four people. As with all rooms, these rooms have fantastic views of the lake, and massive bathrooms fit to share between four. These rooms also have air-conditioners to keep everyone cool at night. The perfect accommodation for families or for those travelers who want to meet other people and make some close friends. They have found that for their training and retreats, these rooms are the most requested. These rooms can fit groups of two, three, or four guests with comfort.
Upstairs in the villa, they have two smaller rooms fit for two people each. These rooms share the same fantastic view, massive balconies, huge bathrooms, and air-conditioners. The twin share option is well-liked for retreats and training for couples or guests wanting privacy and some interaction. These rooms though are also possible to have as single occupancy with a queen-size bed.
These brand-new rooms are hidden under the grass area as you enter the central part of Lanka Yoga. They decided not to lose any green space in building these new rooms, which allowed them to experiment with a more sustainable building model. This means these rooms are cooled by being built into the ground with their green roof. These rooms stay cool year-round, without the need for air conditioning.
These are their most affordable rooms designed for a couple or solo traveler. They have a splittable king bed, with everything else you could need to be both comfortable and cool. In front of these rooms, you have a low view of Koggala lake over the tops of the mangrove trees, with a large natural balcony in front to relax.
The yoga hall has different teaching styles in mind, with a large, comfortable, almost square shape and free of any pillars. It is also hidden in the trees to encourage a calm atmosphere and has all the props you need to make teaching in any style effortless.
Some areas are full of older fruit trees, giving them thousands of mangos, jackfruit, rambutan, donka, papaya, and more in season. Other areas are grass areas for play and outdoor practice. In some parts of the property, they are rewilding by encouraging good soil, planting local trees, and letting nature re-generate. And of course, they have an expansive vegetable and spice garden, which year-round gives them all sorts of vegetables, fruits, and spices which you enjoy in your food.
Immerse yourself in your seven-day holiday experience. The yoga program is based on the principles of yoga synergy. Yoga synergy is modern yoga with a classical and anatomical twist. It is a practice founded on traditional yoga but approached with a modern understanding of human physiology and anatomy. Influenced by the forgotten yoga’s of China and Japan, this practice focuses on the how and why of movement and flowing practices which look a lot like Qigong. It is less about crazy sequences and more about smart actions, intelligent movements, and avoiding unnecessary physical stress.
You could think of it as a more refined version of modern Vinyasa. The movements are more specific, the poses more purposeful, and the teaching style more intentional. There is a deep consideration given to the structure and alignment of each shape. Staying at Lanka Yoga is an experience of ‘arriving home’, to a place of calm filled with laughter, fun, and adventure. Everything from the lighting to the training of the staff and the music they use in the venue is to create a loving, calm yet energizing vibe. They offer two yoga classes a day that are up to two hours long.
These classes are more than just practice, they involve experimentation, workshopping, and some time for deep relaxation. Even with this much yoga, there is still plenty of time for leisure, adventure, or reading your favorite book. Your evening practice is more varied, with some workshopping, meditation, pranayama, and more. Following practice, your conversation dinners encourage meaningful talks about the how’s and why’s of life. After this week-long yoga retreat, not only your body will be feeling great but you will also be grateful for all these amazing people you have met and to be part of a yoga family.
