Permaculture and Yoga Retreats Australia

This retreat combines the science of Permaculture with powers of yoga. Permaculture is a practical yet harmonious design science. By learning to use appropriate and intelligent design principles, you will be able to take care of all your basic physical needs in a responsible way that works with, rather than against nature. Also, before and after the class you can join daily yoga sessions, to align body, mind, and soul.

The Krishna Village can host up to 75 people in a combination of rooms, dorms and camping spots. There are usually around 25 full time volunteers who work in organic gardens and maintain the grounds, 10 long-term community members and 15 to 25 retreat guests or Karma yogis. All rooms have shared amenities. The amenities include showers, toilets and a coin operated laundry. Common areas include the kitchen and campfire area (the heart of the Krishna Village), the reading and the yoga hall, where classes take place.

Single and double rooms

The Krishna Village has 6 double and 11 single rooms. They are all set in former shipping containers, that have been renovated and turned into simple but comfortable accommodation.

For some of the volunteers and yoga teacher trainees, Krishna Village provides dorms (1 male, 1 female, each for up to 4 people) and one double room. The dorms are simple but practical and have bunk beds and wardrobe space for your belongings.

Camp ground

Set among beautiful mango and lychee trees in the eastern garden, Krishna Village Eco Yoga Community camp ground can host up to 20 tents and 5 camper vans. The area for the vans is equipped with electricity. The amenities block is only 50 meters away.

Participating in a Permaculture design course at the Krishna Village eco yoga community is a unique opportunity to be involved in an integrated ‘whole-being’ approach to Permaculture, yoga, and conscious community creation. During your time on this course, you will experience and gain understanding of the following:

  • How a grounding in Permaculture ethics provides a framework for harmonious natural systems
  • Complete set of Permaculture principles that allow the emergence of creative intelligent design strategies
  • Tools and techniques for authentic expression, deep listening and effective, harmonious group interactions
  • The evolutionary context from which Permaculture has arisen and why this makes Permaculture an essential component of a truly sustainable future for humanity
  • The importance of soil and how to use Permaculture techniques, such as compost building, to create new healthy soils for flourishing plant life
  • Distinctions in global climate variations, how to identify any climate and thus choose appropriate strategies for implementing Permaculture anywhere in the world
  • How to design and create a Permaculture home or market gardens for any climatic type
  • The incredible nature of trees and the various ways they interact with energies
  • What a Permaculture food forest is and various strategies in how to create and maintain them
  • Utilizing sector analysis to assess and harmonize with the various energies that enter any site
  • How water shapes the landscape and how to design to utilize the maximum possible potential of water on any site
  • The use of topographic maps in design and how to survey contour lines for water design using easily constructed DIY tools
  • Dams and ponds in Permaculture and how to assess the best positions in a site for their placement
  • How to design for natural swimming pools, rainwater harvesting and irrigation systems
  • Permaculture ‘zones’ and utilization of this concept to create efficient designs radiating harmonically outwards from centers of habitation
  • The basic rules of house design for the major climate types
  • The use of alternate energy and how to design the most appropriate “off-grid” systems when and if relevant
  • Mainframe design: how to understand the most important starting point for any Permaculture design, regardless of scale
  • Permaculture and Integral strategies for the possibilities of co-creating a global alternative nation

Throughout the course, a variety of short group design exercises will be provided, culminating in a final and complete Permaculture design putting into effect everything you will have learned throughout the course in an integrated and embodied presentation. This experience will undoubtedly give you the confidence to create Permaculture designs for yourself, friends, family, and potentially be the first step in a wide-open career pathway. Also, you can optionally chose to attend daily yoga and yogic living sessions, before and after the Permaculture class to align body, mind, and soul.

Damien Bohler
Damien first started studying permaculture in 2005 during a holiday to Thailand. This experience forever changed him and the way he thought about the world and the possibility for humans to live harmoniously on our planet. Since that time, he has volunteered on a variety of farms throughout Asia and has lived and breathed permaculture during the last years as a full-time live-in student and staff member at Zaytuna Farm, home of the Permaculture Research Institute (PRI) in Australia. In addition to permaculture, Damien is also currently completing a Masters degree in Social Ecology.
Fionn Quinlan
Fionn Quinlan has close to thirty years experience in working with the land and the learning processes associated with it. He was raised on the North Coast of NSW and has worked and studied alongside some of Permaculture's pioneers including Graham Bell, Robyn Francis, David Spicer, Geoff Lawton and David Holmgren.

Retreat location

This retreat will take place in The Krishna Village, Australia. Nestled in the foothills of Mount Warning, in the heart of the Northern Rivers of New South Wales, the Hare Krishna farm “New Govardhana” is a beautiful 1000 acre property with orchards, veggie gardens, cows, horses, streams, and swimming holes in abundance. From the moment when you cross the rustic wooden bridge over the Oxley River and pass through the beckoning avenue of trees which comprises the entrance to the farm, you will notice that this vedic yoga sanctuary is a special place and that your soul finds peace and a sense of coming home.

There are usually around 25 full time volunteers who work in these organic gardens and maintain the grounds, 10 long term community members, and 15-25 retreat guests or karma yogis. You will have ample space and environment to appreciate your leanings of the Permaculture classes and carry out the practical implementations.
