Kookaburra Creek Yoga have several onsite accommodation options that include shared rooms in the newly refurbished retreat center, which can accommodate 12 guests in single beds. There is a renovated railway carriage which sleeps two guests in a king size bed. There are two private enclosed gazebos which sleep one to two people. You can also bring your own tent and camp on grounds.

This weekend retreat is a profound opportunity to deepen your experience of yoga, and to cleanse and replenish your body, mind, and soul from the inside - returning to your life de-stressed, refreshed, and revitalized.

Why attend this retreat?

During a single day, humans take in millions of impressions through the senses - all of which imprint upon and become embedded in the body, mind, and soul. Their accumulation leads to sensory overload, stress, and a reduced capacity to cope physically, mentally, and emotionally.

When stressed, they can become less mindful of what they eat, what they do, and where their thoughts lead them. They make reactionary and sometimes poor choices, which often lead to more stress with a negative impact upon their mental and emotional wellbeing and physical health.

The focus of this weekend retreat is to consciously retreat from the sources of all those impressions through cleansing yoga, meditation and pranayama, and also a gentle introductory "soft" fast which includes teas, tonics, juices, and then the introduction of nourishing, healing foods.

You will create space within your body, which provides respite. You become naturally quiet and meditative without the burden of constant digestion, paving the way for deeper states of awareness.

Holistic yoga

Traditional Hatha yoga is comprised of five distinct points, which together comprise a balanced and holistic system of self-care and self-awareness. These include: proper exercise (yoga asana, walking in nature), proper breathing (pranayama), proper relaxation (yoga Nidra), proper thinking (meditation), proper diet and lifestyle (sattvic or peaceful food, time in nature). On this retreat, you will be guided and supported to fully experience the five points of yoga and the yogic lifestyle. The Hatha yoga sessions will be therapeutic in cleansing, healing, and rebalancing.

When practiced with sincerity and integrated into everyday life and everyday thinking, traditional yoga perfectly and effortlessly brings balance and harmony to the five aspects of self: the body, breath, mind or emotions, wisdom, and soul. Kookaburra Creek Yoga share the teachings of yoga "philosophy", which relate to the cleansing practices offered on this retreat and increase your understanding of the "self", the causes and sources of stress and tension, and the rationale behind the methods.

Cleanse and build

On this retreat, Kookaburra Creek Yoga take a "soft" approach to fasting with the inclusion of Ayurvedic herbal teas, broths, tonics, juices, and an abundance of filtered pure spring water which rises from the ground upstream. They prepare for and break the fast with nourishing, easily digested foods such as soft fruits, kitchari (rice, mung bean, spices, vegetable dish), lassi (yoghurt, rose water, cardamom, salt, jaggery), halwa (sweet carrot dessert cooked in nut milk), and then reintroduce broader, nourishing and delicious foods.

In some cultures and traditions, fasting is a regular practice, but for many people fasting of any form is rare. Ekadashi (the 11th day after the full and new moon) is the given day for fasting on the Vedic Lunar calendar. When you restrain from your usual eating habits, the body is allowed to rest internally, with no energy being spent on digestion, you literally create an inner space, an emptiness from which subtle and profound yoga experiences are given the space to emerge. You may experiences depths in your practice, which are not normally accessible to you. Physically your body feels lighter and refreshed. Given its brevity and the fact you will consume pure water, herbal teas, tonics, broths and juices, this fast should be suitable for most people.

Lightness and joy

Your diet and lifestyles are comprised of highly addictive foods and behavior, so refraining from usual eating can be challenging, but is ultimately empowering and transformational! With the support of your retreat facilitators, a grounding in yoga and meditation practices, the knowledge you gain through your experiences and the information imparted, you will leave this retreat profoundly lighter, freer, and revitalized.

Kookaburra Creek Yoga invites you to experience the depths possible in yoga during fasting. This is truly a powerful combination which can help transform your relationship with food, help overcome deep-seated fears which may influence your thinking and choices (you won't starve!), increase your willpower, resolve mental focus and clarity of thought, understand and reduce anxiety, tension and stress, and deepen your appreciation of life and sense of purpose.

Hatha yoga

Kookaburra Yoga's integrated system of Hatha and Raja Yoga is holistic and beneficial on every level of being. Asanas are of two types (both rejuventative/uplifting and restorative/calming) imbued with four qualities: those which bring inner quiet; those which bring focus and body awareness; those which bring humility and detachment; and those which increase confidence and vitality.

Fire ceremony

Agni Hotra is a purifying vedic fire ceremony performed exactly at sunset and sunrise. The ceremony is purifying and cleansing to both the environment and to participants. The Havan is a longer ceremony, which uses vedic mantras and is powerfully protective and transformative.

Yogi's kitchen

Two workshops will introduce you to Ayurvedic. You will determine your unique constitution and how to balance food and culinary herbs to restore internal balance. This provides a foundation for healthy eating (food which is healthy and healing for one person is possibly harmful for another).

Total surrender

On retreat, you will leave behind concerns and distractions to deeply and profoundly realize the spiritual and material benefits of yoga, returning to your life with renewed energy and focus. You deepen the gratitude in your hearts for both the joys and sorrows of your life. Both are a gift of love leading you beyond duality to the graceful, limitless center of yourself.

Daily rhythm

Kookaburra Creek Yoga establishes a rhythm and routine, which bring immediate calmness to the body, mind, and soul. The schedule for your days and evenings is taken care of, allowing you to relax deeply, immersing yourself in the program and the retreat process. You will fall asleep to the sounds of the forest.

Sangha (community)

You will have the time and the opportunity to get to know and share with others if you wish to. Kookaburra Creek Yoga has some lovely big common areas to relax and mingle. This is balanced with periods of mouna, where participants can keep company with others while maintaining a respectful silence.

The healing power of nature

Living closely to nature brings you into harmony with both the external environment and your inner nature, enabling an intuitive understanding of what is needed to rebalance and bring healing to the body, mind, and soul. On this retreat, participants meditate within and upon nature, including the sun, the moon, and the trees.

Powerful, healing places

This retreat includes extended walks to nearby places in the Wungong and Churchman's Brook Reserves. These are places of spiritual significance and natural beauty, and spend time meditating on the scarp, by the river's edge and upon granite boulders. Mandy BeckerKnox
Mandy has been studying and practicing yoga since 1990 in both India and Australia. She has had the great privilege of studying directly with AG and Indra Mohan of the Svastha Yoga and Ayurveda Academy in Chennai, with senior teachers of the Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram in Chennai, with Maharshi Somanatha of the Somanatha Kshetram in Hyderabad, and with acharyas in the Ananda Marga tradition.
Robert Becker
Robert Becker has been practicing and teaching yoga for over 36 years in South Africa, Mauritius, India, and Australia. Robert was initiated into yoga and meditation as a young man by his Diksha Guru HH Sri Swami Venkatesanandaji Maharaj of the Sivananda tradition, Rishikesh, and was given the spiritual name Narayan. Robert spent many years practicing intensively living in ashrams and travelling in India before settling into family life.

Retreat location

This retreat will take place in Kookaburra Creek Yoga Center in Bedfordale in the Perth hills, Western Australia with capacity and equipment for 40 students. It is set within 10 acres of natural bush. The center was created as a sanctuary for seekers to experience the profound depths of true yoga with pristine and vital environment which supports, replenishes, and holds you during your retreat. ​The grounds and facilities are also suitable for those who may wish to camp in their own tent.

Kookaburra Creek Yoga is truly a place in harmony with nature. It is an eco-friendly property powered by the sun utilising the pure, soft spring water which rises higher up the hill. Classes are often accompanied by the sounds of kookaburras, crickets, frogs, birds, and the breeze between the branches of the trees.

Food on this retreat is Sattvic, meaning it brings peace and enhances the wellbeing of the body, mind, and spirit. All food is plant-based, predominantly organic with much of the produce coming from Kookaburra Creek Yoga's own kitchen garden. Cuisine is vegetarian and gluten-free, and is sustainable, pure, and real - supporting your body to detox, cleanse, and heal. Vegan options for all dishes.

Many people come to a retreat for rest and respite. You will have allowed time in the program for the rest you need and reflection. Kookaburra Creek Yoga's wide verandahs overlooking the creek and forest with comfortable chairs and hammocks are the perfect place to read, write, or reflect.

Switch off and reconnect

Participants will unplug from technology, computers, phones, devices, and social media for the weekend. By all means bring a book (paper), camera, and provide loved ones with Kookaburra Creek Yoga's landline for emergencies. With your focus consciously tuned to experience the present moment, the natural world, and your own inner nature, you are able to begin the recovery and reintegration of your fragmented attention.
