Kirpal Meditation and Ecological Center (KMEC) in Pahoa, Hawaii offers a spiritually uplifting environment to heal and grow. Located on the eastern tip of the Big Island of Hawaii, KMEC is very close to the ocean for safe swimming, snorkeling, and soaking in the thermal warm ponds. Their center is not far from Hawaiis only active volcanoes where one may view flowing lava. Kirpal Meditation and Ecological Center opened in the summer of 2008 for pre-arranged seasonal meditation retreats and private meditation-vacations on request. Additionally, KMEC extends their welcome to Big Island travelers offering cozy cottages and open air kitchen and bath.
KMEC is an off-the-grid retreat center that can accommodate up to 30 guests on an idyllic 10 acre property. It is situated on ten acres featuring organic fruit orchards with a beautiful Balinese meditation pavilion for prayer and healing as well as the yoga pavilion that can accommodate up to 20 yoga practitioners or a seated audience of 100.
KMEC offers a wide range of accommodations depending on your level of comfort and privacy; from a private cabin with its own kitchen and bath, to a simple single bed private cabin including a variety of options in between. All bathrooms have flush toilets and the showers have hot water. Accommodations are simple and comfortable, with no televisions or phones.
KMECs largest event space, it has a floor space size of about 20-feet by 40-feet and has about 1000-square feet of floor space. It can accommodate over 100 people sitting or standing or about 20 people stretched out and lying down (i.e. on yoga mats). The Yoga Hale includes its own kitchen and full bathrooms.
KMECs Balinese meditation pavilion opens 24 hours a day for prayer, small group meetings, yoga, or solitude. Custom made in Bali, it is a very holy and special place for prayer and reflection. It can accommodate 30-40 people sitting on cushions. It is equipped with a TV, DVD-player, Wi-Fi, light, cushions, and own independent solar power system.
In order to accommodate you during your workshop, KMEC has available a large variety of items for your use and some at no additional cost. You will receive a list of these items eight weeks prior to your arrival. Items can include:
All KMECs cabins can be occupied by one person or two persons (except from Milo 1, and Papaya1, each of single occupancy, and Rollinia which can take up to four persons along with Mango which can sleep four comfortably).
Queen bed, one or two persons, usually for couples. It's very private (romantic) and has its own toilet and outdoor shower. You can find solace in this cozy screen cabin nestled in the Puna jungle, with a partial great ocean view, light trade winds, a lanai (deck), and hot shower. Its near the meditation pavilion. The fully equipped shared kitchen is about 800 feet away.
Single bed, one person. Its very close to the Dragonfly. KMEC never rents it out if the Dragonfly is occupied except if its a party of three.
Queen bed, two persons. One of KMEC most popular. It has a great expansive view of the ocean with deck and private shower with toilet. This newly built screen-cabin is tucked into a pleasant opening in the jungle, overlooking a 500 acre ranch, giving a panoramic view of the coastline. You can enjoy amazing pink and red sunrises over a wide swath of ocean to the east, while basking in the gentle trade-wind breezes coming through the trees. As open and airy as you can get, featuring a spacious lanai (deck) and its own treehouse-like bathroom lanai about 30 feet (10 meters) away. A hot shower and vanity sink - all semi-enclosed, but still private, up in the branches of primitive looking Lauhala trees. The shared kitchen / social area is an easy 100 feet stroll along our level driveway.
Queen bed, two persons. A lovely octagon cabin, the shared fully equipped kitchen, and two full clean and modern bathrooms, with a great jungle view are about 60 feet away.
Double bed, plus two bunk beds, so it can sleep three or four persons for the same price.
Elegant and cozy, it will catch your breath from the hustle and bustle in the serenity of this cabin, it offers lovely furniture. The shared fully equipped kitchen and two fully equipped clean modern bathrooms featuring a great jungle view are about 60 feet away. Children under 12 are free.

Michelle is a registered yoga teacher with Yoga Alliance, specializing in Vinyasa, Prenatal and Yin yoga styles. Having taught predominantly in Canada since early 2015, she is excited to be sharing her passion for yoga internationally. She enjoys combining a vigorous asana practice with yogic philosophy and slower, more meditative fascial release. Her goal in teaching is to create balance in people’s lives by holding space and cultivating silence.
Alex was born and bred in Milton Keynes, UK. She discovered yoga wile studying in New York City and completed her 200 Hour Certification in February 2016. Alex has taught over 200 hours of classes and completed teacher training in prenatal yoga. Expect meditation, pranayama, reference to the yogic teachings and use of mantras. Be ready to laugh, smile, discover, and most importantly have fun! She hopes that through yoga, she can help others to return to a natural state of happiness and true bliss!
KMEC is a sustainable community in the center of Hawaiis volcanic and natural wonders. This property was once a papaya farm and is now newly planted with sour sop, jack fruit, pomegranate, rollinia, variety of bananas, figs, passion fruit, mamey sapote, avocados, papayas, sugar cane, coconut, lilikoi, and guava. There are also loquat, cacao, macadamia nut, cashew nut, noni, starfruit, breadfruit, tangelos, grapefruit, oranges, tangerines, lemons, pomelos, and more.
The octagonal Balinese meditation pavilion is set among shade-trees with an expansive view of the ocean. The island wildlife is all around KMEC - a variety of birds by day and at night, theres the pleasant chirping of Coqui frogs, and there are no snakes. Natural wonders include Volcanoes National Park, lava and crater viewing, volcanically heated warm ponds directly on the ocean, steam vents (as outdoor saunas), and other wonders of the lush tropics.

There are many natural attractions in the vicinity of KMEC. These can be visited by arranging a paid adventure with KMECs guide if required, or if you prefer to explore on your own, renting a car from the airport is a good option as well.

Snorkeling at Kapoho Lagoon Reef and tide pools on Kapoho Bay. Pleasant and safe.

Surfing at Isaac Hale Beach Park. Also known as Pohoiki, this is an oceanfront park, boat launch, and surf location along Pohoiki Bay. Recommended for experienced surfers only.
Swimming and snorkeling at Issac Hale Boat Ramp Park, on Pohoiki Bay, swimming is safe and has easy access. You can find a small warm healing pond as well. No entrance cost.
Swimming at Black Sands Beach at Kehena. A hard but short climb up and down, swimming could be dangerous. This is a clothing optional beach and frequented by dolphins.
Thermal swimming at Warm Ponds (Ahalanui Beach Park). A spring-fed thermal pool, safe and relaxing, fine view, and warm to hot healing waters at the ocean edge. No entrance cost.

Please book a Hele-On Bus, Hawaii County mass transit agency. Take into account the very limited public transportation via the Hele-On county bus that leaves from downtown Hilo. This is a slow, but inexpensive option that comes to Isaac Hale Beach Park, if you can coordinate schedules.
