I've had many experiences in my life but nothing quite compares to Kirpal. This place is amazing in more ways than I can list and it really transformed me in only a few days (wish I had booked for longer). I wanted to take my first solo trip and found this as the best yoga retreat center in Hawaii (in my opinion). I was scared I wasn't going to have anyone to hang out with or meet but quite the contrary. All of the guests are eager to meet new people and the volunteers are extraordinary. While I was there Len, the owner himself, said something along the lines of - 'I can tell how successful this center is simply on the happiness of the volunteers', and it's true. They are all so respectful to everyone and they are there whenever you need them.
It's hard not to be happy at a place like this. Everywhere you look is lush, green beauty and when you eat their homemade vegan meals you're eating a large percentage of harvest straight from the land. That's not something you can get on every vacation you go to so take advantage of the opportunity to truly nourish your body. I felt revived to be there and the yoga was really incredible. Great teachers and great views but my favorite part was my private yoga session with Amanda Carson. Wow! I asked her to teach me inversion and silks as a beginner and by the next day I was doing headstands all on my own. She's truly skilled (and not just in yoga). I hope everyone can take her class and be around her energy.
If I had to make a couple constructive criticisms it is that it took a few days to get a hold of someone on the phone to answer questions but after that it was smooth sailing the rest of the way. Also, my towels smelled a little bit mildew-like but we are in the jungle so didn't bother me. In fact I would encourage everyone to come here with an open mind. It's not a 5 star hotel and they're not trying to be. It's a place to get away and be one with the Earth- to have solitude while nourishing your body and mind with fresh air, clean meals, new friends and a lot of laughter.
Thank you so much, KMEC! I will be back!

My preschooler and I had a wonderful stay at KMEC! I am not sure which part we loved the most: exploring the exotic fruit trees on the property, spending time with new friends in the community kitchen, the unique bathrooms that overlook the "jungle", or our cozy cabin that was clean and comfortable. The staff was extremely helpful and always available to assist. We just loved it and would be extremely grateful if we ever have the opportunity to return!

Kirpal Meditation and Ecological Center is a beautiful, serene place. Although it is off the grid, I find it to still have the comforts of home which I didn't expect. I.E. plenty of electrical outlets in cabins to charge devices, the filtered water for drinking tastes amazing, the wifi is reasonably fast and reliable, the showers have hot water, and the toilets are a full flush (if you've experienced a low flush toilet you know why this is nice!).The staff are friendly and helpful, and also very knowledgeable of the area to assist you with planning outings. If you partake in any of the meals, it is always delicious!! They cook vegetarian meals with local organic produce. You can even eat the fresh fruits that grow on the property including coconuts, bananas, tangerines, oranges, limes, lemons, mangos, grapefruit, rollinia, and so much more I can't even remember it all!The location of the property is only a half mile from the beach, surfing, snorkeling, and warm ponds. It's about 15 minutes from the main town, so if you don't have a car it is definitely a bit secluded and more challenging to get to the grocery store, pharmacy, etc. It is a tropical, jungle setting so there are bugs, just come prepared for that. There is some natural bug spray and sunscreen in the community kitchen as a backup, and there are screens on all the cabins which keeps most of them out while you're sleeping. If you are interested in any services they have massage, acupressure, acupuncture, reiki, and yoga just to name a few. They welcome any guests to join in the satsangs or meditations in the meditation pavilion. They also have laundry facilities and guests can pay $7 to have their laundry done for them, which is great if you pack light.Overall, I found it to be a good balance of all the qualities I was looking for. Comforts of home but still rustic, close to the beach and not far from town, good food but a kitchen to cook your own as well, and happy people but plenty of privacy. Definitely would recommend to friends and family (just not the ones who prefer 5-star resorts).

Wonderful! We were looking for a place in nature where we could relax and enjoy nature and do some meditation. This was the place to go! The fruit trees around us and the simple rustic accommodations were wonderful! We had the opportunity to do yoga and also attend a couple Satsangs while we were there. All the staff was helpful! We will defiantly be back next year. I hear that it usually rains in this area but it was very sunny and warm when we were there. They are close to the warm pool and not too far from Pahoa. We had our own kitchen in the Noni cabin. We were glad that this center promotes the vegetarian diet. We have been vegetarians for many years. This center is off grid and they promote green living!

Beautiful property, loved the night critters. I'm not the target demographic (I don't meditate, and I was more interested in exploring the Big Island than relaxing), but this property is really wonderful. I reserved the peaceful Dragonfly cabin which is both open (screens for walls) and secluded (surrounded by forest). Being enclosed by the sounds of the rustling flora and skittering fauna was, in fact, peaceful, and conducive to restful sleep. I was warmly greeted on arrival, given a thorough tour and invited to make use of the public facilities (e.g., kitchen, yoga hall, meditation room), and was invited to breakfast harvested that morning from the on-site orchards. It felt like upscale camping. Water is mostly from catchments, and electricity is solar-powered. There was plenty of hot water for a short shower in the morning. Wi-Fi was available in the main complex, but did not extend down to my remote cabin. In any event, the electricity in the cabin died after only a few minutes of use - not sure whether that was a glitch or not, but it ended up making the experience even more relaxing. Outstanding access to the hot pots, and there were lots of surfers enjoying themselves nearby.

Peaceful break, the Kirpal Center was both peaceful and beautiful. The yoga hale is amazing at dawn. I loved the outdoor bathrooms. Steve was very accommodating: he answered all of my questions and gave me the solitude I wanted.

I will be back. I stayed at KMEC for an entire month! My stay here was simply wonderful! My cabin was very charming with beautiful character. The staff was very kind, patient, and willing to show me around the island. The surrounding land is very well kept very clean! Hardly any bugs, most definitely the cleanest place I saw during my travels around The Big Island. KMEC is located on Pohoiki road - a quick hitchhike to all the fun hang out spots and I can't express how much there is to do on the Island, you will never get bored. Sunday: early morning ecstatic dance at Kalani followed by an afternoon party at Kehena black sand nudist beach and then a cool down at the lawn with all the local hippies. Perfect Tuesdays night: Taco Tuesday at Cinderland. Wednesdays night: the one and only uncle Roberts. Thursdays night: Maku'u Sweat Lodge. Saturdays mornings spent in one of the many markets around the Pahoa/Puna district. My Saturday afternoon consisted of Kava drinks and burritos in town and all of the above events are free!

Incredible time. My friend and I stayed at KMEC for a week during February and really enjoyed our time there. The staff is wonderful and friendly and the room was simple but very charming and quiet with an incredible view onto the surrounding nature. Its walking distance to the warm ponds at Pohoiki beach which we thoroughly enjoyed, and the road there, lined with old mango trees, is one of the most beautiful sights in Hawaii. Perfect for anyone looking to have a relaxing and fun holiday!

Stayed for one week at Kirpal and enjoyed it very much! Simple and nice cabins with comfortable beds in a tropical garden, nice and big open kitchen as well as clean open bathrooms looking out to the green surroundings. Very friendly and nice staff and residents, offering all kinds of advice. I didn't participate in the morning Yoga sessions, but surely will be doing this next time!
