Foundations of Yoga Teacher Training USA

The most authentic teaching comes from deep, personal experience. This three-week immersion is intended to inspire devotion and discipline within personal practices. For aspiring yoga teachers, this in-depth certification program will prepare you with a solid understanding of the foundations of yoga. Rooted in Patanjali's Eight Fold Path, the curriculum will be rich with philosophy, pranayama, and meditation. In addition, it will prepare teachers to lead students safely and intelligently with an understanding of anatomy and alignment within the asana, as well as the ability to thread philosophy into Hatha and Vinyasa classes.

Depending on the group size, accommodations could consist of one large community home, several homestays on the island or a combination of both. The cost will vary and can be determined at the time of registration.


Daily study sessions will cover, but are not limited to:

  • Study of the yoga Sutras and how they support yoga practice
  • Study of the eight limbs of yoga and its foundational structure for personal practice and teaching
  • Pranayama, breathing techniques
  • Meditation: deepening self-practice, techniques
  • Asana: foundation, alignment, modifications, and sanskrit
  • Yoga anatomy and injury prevention
  • Cuing and sequencing asana
  • Constructing safe, balanced Hatha, and Vinyasa yoga classes
  • Sequencing Ashtanga, Yin, Kundalini, yoga therapy, yoga Nidra
  • Hands-on assisting and adjusting in asana
  • Qualities of a yoga teacher
  • Seva, spirit of selfless action
  • Ayurveda and doshas
  • Business of yoga

Typical daily schedule

From Monday through Friday, you will begin with daily morning practice for two hours beginning at 6:30 a.m. You will study the rest of the day together with nourishing meals in-between study sessions until about 6:30 p.m. Saturdays are shorter days as you only study and practice from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Sundays are days of rest.

The morning practice and afternoon study sessions will primarily be held in the yoga studio. Each morning study session will be held in various stunning outdoor locations on the island, weather permitting.

This is a challenging immersion and requires the drive to truly be present, open, receptive, and with a great willingness to learn. It is not a program suitable for beginning yoga students. It is intended for those with experience and ready for the next step of growth. It is a true gift to offer this sacred material to others, and an honor to receive. Each program is guaranteed to create massive change internally and externally, and will surely gift everlasting memories and inspiration for a healthy and happy mind and body, and a deeper connection and awareness in everyday life.


Upon completion of this yoga teacher training, students will receive certificate affiliated with Yoga Alliance through the Key West Yoga Sanctuary. Registration with Yoga Alliance provides a globally recognized credential.

Erika Hawks practices and teaches Ashtanga yoga, in the tradition of Sri. K. Pattabhi Jois, because she has experienced first hand it’s transformational powers. Yoga transforms mind, body, and soul. She loves sharing the benefits of yoga and making the practices accessible. As a teacher, she strives to create a space for students to experience the limitless possibilities. A recent transplant to Key West, Erika already feels at home.

Retreat location

The teacher training takes place on the quiet end of Duval street, the Key West Yoga Sanctuary, Florida, United States. This is a Hatha yoga studio, organic cafe, and boutique offering classes and workshops to support happiness, health, and mindfulness.

The morning practice and afternoon study sessions will primarily be held in the yoga studio. Each morning study session will be held in various stunning outdoor locations if the weather permits.
