It offers inspiring inclusive spiritual retreats for its guests, as well as being the home for courses in many fields, including meditation, yoga, wellness retreats, men's and women's courses and a wide variety of programs in the creative and healing arts.

Embracing mountain, bush and sea, Mana Retreat is not only a place for learning but also provides a perfect atmosphere for the enrichment of body, mind and spirit. The accommodations at Mana Retreat are mainly lodges and retreat cabins. The sleeping lodges have comfortable wood lined double rooms, some with private facilities.

Ponga Lodge also has a private kitchen for personal retreats. The two individual retreat cabins in the bush are available for those who seek total privacy.

Situated south of the city of Coromandel, Mana Retreat is on a 120 hectares property of rolling hills and bush, looking north to the sea and guarded by the two mountains, Pukewhakataratara and Pukehino. The temporal space between Christmas and the New Year is often an overlooked opportunity, neither here nor there. Most of us are frazzled after the frenzied and frantic energy leading up to Christmas, then in angst over the anticipation of the New Year beginning. This “space between” is the literal threshold of change - letting go of the old, pausing to soften, become really present with yourself, and inviting the new with a sense of potential and possibility.Explore and expand this space wholeheartedly - devote yourself to four days of regular holistic practice including meditation, Yin yoga, Vinyasa flow yoga and yoga Nidra. There will also be plentiful time to rest, walk, contemplate, converse and laugh or simply be in stunning natural surroundings. Mana Retreat is a truly special place for you to do this.

Driving directions from Thames

From Thames take State Highway 25 along the Pohutakawa-fringed coast line toward Coromandel.

After about 30 minutes on the coast road you will come to Wilson Bay after which the highway turns inland and uphill.

After a short dip the road rises again to Manaia Summit and Rest Area. From here drive 2 kilometers downhill looking for the sign on the right “Mana Retreat 300m”. Turn right into the drive.

If arriving after dark, the drive is marked by a series of red reflectors on stockyard fencing. Passing a side road to the left, continue up the drive to the fishpond and palm.

The retreat is on the left and the office is through the double doors. The car park is a few meters beyond the retreat. Parking on the tennis courts is allowed if arrived after dark.

Arrival by airplane

There is a shuttle operated by A-B Shuttles to and from the airport. Rates charged are based on the number of passengers per shuttle.

Arrival by bus

There are several bus options - depending on what time your flight arrives - they all go to Thames, then on to Coromandel. The bus company Go-Kiwi has a bus running at around 1 p.m. The Intercity bus company has a bus in the morning and at lunchtime - however, you would need to jump on the shuttle from airport to Manukau - where you would pick up the bus.

You will arrive at our Mana gate at either 10.49am or 4.19pm. The cost is about 45 NZD per person. For the return trip, there is only one early morning bus to Auckland from Coromandel (via Mana Retreat gate) each day.

Arrival by ferry

There is a ferry service by 360 Discovery from downtown Auckland to Coromandel. They run on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday departing Auckland and Coromandel; and on Sunday departing Coromandel. Their ferry sails at 8.45am or 6pm – depending on the day - from downtown Auckland.

Hence, you would need to take a shuttle there - but this may be suitable if your flight is an early or later arrival. You can be picked up from the ferry depot and bring you to Mana for a donation of 10 NZD. The ferry is cancelled during rough weather although a bus to replace it is provided. The cost of the ferry ride is approximately 56 NZD per person.

"Fantastic instruction! Wonderful clear calming voice. Thank you for the inspirational quotes, sharing your story, living what you're teaching and being such a great example. And thank you for catering to my skeptical mind during the practices and reminding me that I can just breathe."

"Being part of your Yoga Retreat over Christmas has been deeply transformative for myself. I cannot extent my love and gratitude to you enough to thank you for this. You are a wonderful teacher! There have been many days this year where I have spent time on my yoga mat. When I stand on the mat and breathe, it feels like "this is Gold". But I do miss the connection to you, and your guidance and holding, and the like-minded people from our retreat. And I so miss the dancing!"

" I am the only male participant in that retreat and I've no experience in yoga. I would like to thank the organizer (Mana Retreat Centre), coach (Katy Carter), and all participants for being so inclusive and helpful to me! The tranquillity of the venue and friendly staff are perfect for the retreat. Katy is very enthusiastic, professional, and caring in looking after all participants at different levels. It was a pleasure to have participated in the Yoga retreat and learned some foundations in yoga.Thank you. " website, edited

"I've really enjoyed the sessions. I wish I found Yoga 20 years ago. I stand taller, am more limber, more energized, and my shoulders feel OK. So it's been great and I'm in for good. Katy is awesome. (Yes you are)."

  • Review by Anoushka M from New Zealand

"I have tried a few teachers over the years as a beginner, and I have found Katy perfect having an all round focus, concentrating on postures, strength and flexibility; but also having a breathing, meditative element, working with the way the body is feeling in the moment, all without it being too hippy."
