Kanga yoga

Kanga yoga is an energetic, alignment‐based flow yoga practice using music, gravity and the breath to rediscover and rejuvenate the body and the mind. The practice is inspired by the teachings of Swami Sivananda, Yogacharya B.K.S. Iyengar and Sri Krishna Pattabhi Jois.

According to the Ayurveda system (“science of life” in Sanskrit), people have different biological body types. A relaxed yin yoga practice may be good for one body type, whereas an energetic Yang practice may be best for another body type. Our biological energies vary according to our lifestyles.

Ayurveda views illness as caused by an imbalance in a person’s physical or mental constitution and therefore seeks to gently bring a person’s body and mind back into a healthy balance.

Kanga yoga adapts yoga to the individual rather than the individual to yoga. Each class deepens student’s yoga practice, provides a practical understanding of yoga, and offers the opportunity to focus on specific postures, their benefit, alignment, and breath control.

Music itself is Hatha Yoga Sadhana; it involves a good amount of control and regulation of breath. Moreover, the various musical notes have their own corresponding nadis (subtle channels in the vital sheath of the body) in the vital centres within the Kundalini chakras, and music vibrates these nadis, purifies them, and awakens the psychic and spiritual power dormant in them.

Kanga Yoga integrates sound, asana and mudra to bring the body and mind into balance and harmony.


Ayurveda and yoga are sister Vedic sciences that have been united for thousands of years. They show the way to achieve sacred balance in the mind and body, which leads to physical and mental wellness.

Ayurveda can be defined as a system, which uses the inherent principles of nature, to help maintain health in a person by keeping the individual’s body and mind in perfect equilibrium with nature.

Ayurveda is a complete way of life, a holistic health system comprising diet, yoga, massage, detoxification, herbal remedies, meditation and daily lifestyle. Ayurveda improves not only a person's health, but also their well-being, behavior and state of mind.

Emma Bonnici

Emma Bonnici, the founder of Kanga yoga, is an international yoga teacher and Ayurveda therapist. She has been studying yoga and Ayurveda for over 10 years. Emma teaches with enthusiasm, care and attention to detail. She brings knowledge gained from her own personal practice and provides strong encouragement and support in her classes. As an avid traveler, Emma connects herself with others through yoga whilst following her passion for creating events and her destined path of yoga.

Since 2008, Emma has been travelling to India for yoga and events. She returns twice a year to India to Rishikesh to practice with her teachers and teach. Emma trained as a yoga teacher with the International Sivananda organization in Vietnam and as a children’s yoga teacher with Rainbow Kids Yoga in London. She completed her Ayurveda therapist training with Dr Vinod at the Ayuskama Ayurveda and Panchakarma Centre in India.

Emma has worked closely with the International Indian Film Awards for events in Macau, India and Sri Lanka. In 2011, she returned to India to teach yoga and write a weekly yoga column for The Hindustan Times national newspaper. Today, Emma divides her time between teaching Kanga yoga courses in London and running retreats in Croatia, India, and Africa.
