Suyian is fortunate to have good diversity of wildlife some species of which are endemic to Laikipia like the Jacksons hartebeest. Predators are on the increase due to more awareness; lion, leopard, spotted hyena, striped hyena, wild dog and many of the smaller mammals. There are good numbers of elephant, giraffe, oryx, gerenuk and buffalo, hippo in the river. Suyian is a very big area therefore it is a good idea to do at least one or two game drives so that you are able to see more wildlife, birds and ranch activity.
Suyian is a semi-arid environment so the flora is made up of Acacia bush land with some succulent plants as well as relic forest species when Laikipia was forested about three thousand years ago. There is no end to all the medicinal value of their indigenous flora most of which they are able to share with you.
There's no better way to experience the magic of Suyian than on foot. Bush walks play a huge part of getting to know Suyian. Walking gives us a chance to look closely at all the trees, shrubs and smaller plants along the way, most of which will be useful in some way either medicinal or for home use, and there are some good wild herb teas too.
Suyian is situated in an interesting area for the local people. It is not so far from Lake Turkana, the Chalbi desert and some of Samburu lands most spectacular hills covered in pristine dry cedar and olive forests. Nearby, their immediate neighbours are Samburu, Pokot, Turkana and Kikuyu; all of whom live fairly close to each other. The Suyian Trust is actively involved in several projects within the communities. A visit to the local samburu village to meet the people is recommended. The village will organize a cultural experience which includes dancing and singing too.
Suyian Soul is nestled in the North East corner of Suyian Ranch, which covers 43,000 acres of spectacularly beautiful scenery in northwest Laikipia. The property encompasses a series of dramatic escarpments, exclusive valleys and expansive grassland plains.
Within Suyian and stretching out into the wider ecosystem, there are significant populations of elephants, reticulated giraffes, ostriches, hippos, Burchells zebras, Grevys zebras, buffalos, lions, leopards, African wild dogs, cheetahs, and many more species. The property is also home to rare and interesting species of plants.
The Suyian Soul team will make sure that you have everything you need in the rooms, as well as any dietary preferences. There is wholesome home cooked food with everything being made in the camp.
Kanga Events prefers to give its guests seasonal organic vegetables and fruit, most of the vegetables are grown organically on the Suyian ranch. Most of the fruit is grown on the lower slopes of Mt. Kenya to the North. Whole-wheat flour comes from the family farm, Kisima, which is also on the slopes of Mt.Kenya.
The generous farmhouse food is fresh and wholesome, with local and homegrown fruit and vegetables at Mukima House.
