Suyian Soul Camp

Suyian Soul Camp has a very peaceful energy about it, a variety of small creatures have generously accepted the camp in their midst.

There are six thatched cottages, with safari-style showers under the starts, long drops toilets, and mosquito nets. The rooms are simple thatched open bandas with granite slab walls joined with the Suyian mix of daub, the floors are also granite slabs joined with daub covered with handmade pure wool rugs.

The beds and tables are all made from old cedar fence posts, which have been pulled up from the Ranch over the years. The roof follows a simple dome shape with a good pitch ensuring that rain flows straight off. Water in the bathrooms and showers comes from the Uaso Narok River.

Day 1

Drive or fly (additional charge) to Nanyuki where a driver / game guide will be waiting to welcome you. We take an exclusive game drive to camp and arrive in good time for to enjoy sunset Kanga Yoga practice on camp. Evening dinner is served on camp followed by a cozy bonfire.

Day 2

Practice Kanga yoga until sunrise on the camp. After breakfast, enjoy an introduction to Ayurveda and yoga talk on camp. Discover your true nature in a private Ayurvedic consultation with Emma. In the afternoon, we are taken on a walk with Anne Powys into the magical world of plants and their useful and medicinal value. Enjoy evening Kanga Yoga and dinner will be served on camp.

Day 3

You arrive back at camp in time for lunch and set out in the late afternoon for a Game Drive and Kanga Yoga on the open plains at dusk. Dinner is served back at camp followed by a camp bonfire and Ayurvedic snacks.

Day 4

Guided game drives

Suyian is fortunate to have good diversity of wildlife some species of which are endemic to Laikipia like the Jacksons hartebeest. Predators are on the increase due to more awareness; lion, leopard, spotted hyena, striped hyena, wild dog and many of the smaller mammals. There are good numbers of elephant, giraffe, oryx, gerenuk and buffalo, hippo in the river. Suyian is a very big area therefore it is a good idea to do at least one or two game drives so that you are able to see more wildlife, birds and ranch activity.

The bush walk

Suyian is a semi-arid environment so the flora is made up of Acacia bush land with some succulent plants as well as relic forest species when Laikipia was forested about three thousand years ago. There is no end to all the medicinal value of their indigenous flora most of which they are able to share with you.

There's no better way to experience the magic of Suyian than on foot. Bush walks play a huge part of getting to know Suyian. Walking gives us a chance to look closely at all the trees, shrubs and smaller plants along the way, most of which will be useful in some way either medicinal or for home use, and there are some good wild herb teas too.

The Samburu Village

Suyian is situated in an interesting area for the local people. It is not so far from Lake Turkana, the Chalbi desert and some of Samburu lands most spectacular hills covered in pristine dry cedar and olive forests. Nearby, their immediate neighbours are Samburu, Pokot, Turkana and Kikuyu; all of whom live fairly close to each other. The Suyian Trust is actively involved in several projects within the communities. A visit to the local samburu village to meet the people is recommended. The village will organize a cultural experience which includes dancing and singing too.
