Kailasam Yoga Centre was originally a private house, which has been extended and converted into a yoga center. It is a calm oasis, set among lush vegetation, away from any road, and reached only by a footpath through the coconut groves.
Upstairs is their lovely dining area where they serve delicious and generous breakfasts. The fare is western-style, fresh, and tropical. You can use the kitchen to make yourself tea, coffee, or herb tea anytime, day or night, and they provide complimentary drinking water.
The shaded, relaxation roof with its daybeds is a favorite among their guests. It is great for chilling out after a massage or catching up with that novel.
There are eight guest bedrooms, yoga shala, relaxation areas, and dining areas, all within a beautiful garden. Kailasam Yoga Centre can accommodate up to 11 people on-site, in single and shared bedrooms, and two or three rooms nearby are also used for the most popular times of the year.
All rooms are en suite, simple but comfortable, individually decorated, with ceiling fans, mosquito nets on windows and over beds, hot showers, and western-style toilets.
Kailasam Yoga usually offers two yoga classes each day, one before breakfast and one in the early evening before dinner. They provide a generous western-style breakfast each day, and other meals are taken in the friendly local cafes and restaurants nearby. This retreat is ideal for single travelers, couples, or friends, and are suitable for all levels of yoga experience.
You will be looked after from the time you arrive at Trivandrum International Airport (TRV) until it’s time to catch your flight home. You’ll find plenty of time to enjoy the locality between yoga classes, and with two free days in the middle of each holiday, you can explore further afield - or simply stay put and relax.
Kailasam Yoga organizes taxis and rickshaws to show you temples, villages, beaches, festivals, elephants, birds, markets, and to experience the Kerala way of life. The state capital city, Trivandrum, just 30 minutes away, is also a favorite for shopping and sight-seeing.
They rely on their principle drivers, Prem and Hari who between them manage and organize all your transport needs.
For the two yoga-free days there are a choice of trips, including an overnight boat journey through the tranquil Kerala Backwaters. See village life taking place from the comfort of your houseboat as you glide along rivers and through lakes and lagoons, alive with birds and wildlife.
Diana Shipp grew up in Brighton, England, studied environmental science, and made her career in conservation and sustainable tourism. During this time, she was also practicing and studying yoga and began teaching in 1991. Soon her interests in yoga and the spiritual path led her to India. It was in 2000, during a ‘mature gap year’ that she signed up for a teacher’s course at an ashram, discovered Kovalam and fell in love with Kerala. Diana expanded and transformed the small yoga retreat into Kailasam Yoga. She now divides her time between Kerala and Nortfolk, UK, running the yoga holidays.
The retreat will take place in Kailasam Yoga Centre. It is situated in the seaside village of Kovalam, in Kerala, South India. From Kailasam, it is just three minutes’ walk to the sandy lighthouse beach and the Arabian sea. It provides a peaceful and homely base but with the advantage of being part of Kovalam Village so you can experience the real India while still getting away from it all.

Kovalam Yoga restaurants cater to all tastes with western-style dishes and local curries. The food is excellent. You can enjoy tea and banana cake at the local chai shop or dine in restaurants on freshly prepared seafood. Food is reasonably priced with plenty of choices for vegetarians.
Sunset is a special time, and it is wonderful to sit in a restaurant or on the sand and watch the sun sink into the sea. Fishing is still carried out from the beach, in the traditional way, and it is fascinating to watch or even help the men haul in their nets.
You can spend your days visiting local sights, lazing on a sunbed, and swimming in the sea, or at one of the local hotel’s swimming pools (for a small charge). There are also several other quieter beaches within walking distance.
After the sun goes down is a great time to browse for jewelry, clothes, handicrafts, and gifts. You can also enjoy having your own designs created - or your favorite clothes copied - by the skilled Kovalam tailors.
Kailasam Yoga Centre offers Ayurvedic massages, and Ayurvedic treatments, as the perfect complementary therapies for yoga.
The treatments are like an extra health-enhancing step that will go deeper than simple massage. The treatments will help virtually any physical disease by balancing the energies and rejuvenating the body, normalizing weight, boosting the immune system, and the body’s own natural healing mechanisms.
They are extremely effective for treating back, neck and joint pain, stress, trapped nerves, poor circulation, obesity, skin complaints, stiff joints and tension, insomnia, depression, and other disorders.
Please book your flight to arrive at Trivandrum International Airport (TRV). Transfer from and to the airport is included. Kailasam Yoga will pick you up from the airport.
