In addition to its picturesque setting, relaxed way of life and delectable food, the Greek island of Corfu is also steeped in cultural history. The origins of Corfu can be traced back as far as Greek Mythology. The islands Greek name, Kerkyra is related to two powerful water symbols: Poseidon, God of the sea, and Asopos, a prominent Greek river.

According to myth, the God of the sea Poseidon fell in love with the beautiful nymph Korkyra and took her to this stunning but unnamed island. In marital bliss, Poseidon named the island Korkyra after his wife. This name gradually evolved throughout time to the Greek name of Kerkyra, which the island retains to this day.

In addition to Greek mythology, the island's history is also full of battles and conquests. With castles enclosing the islands capital Corfu Town, it has been officially declared a Kastropolis, or castle city by the Greek government.

    A picturesque landscape

With its rich, mountainous landscape, Corfu offers a beautiful view to its visitors. The Northern area of the island has preserved its natural and architectural environment, making it popular with visitors and locals alike.

Dominated by mountains, the island has a never ending expanse of rolling hills and blossoming trees, bursting with lush vegetation. Coastal areas offer tranquil white sandy beaches, while the shimmering blue sea provides a perfect backdrop to the green Corfiot countryside.

"When you walk through the door you are greeted with a hug. You will hear Alice and Hara saying 'Welcome Home'. That's what Just Relax is...it is home."

"The house and rooms are beautiful and always well kept. I was particularly impressed with the 'Ares Room'. Though the bed was quite firm, I found relaxation in the large bathtub and on the serene balcony. "

"The areas for yoga are breathtaking: a beach platform 20 meters from the ocean and garden pagoda facing the mountains. "

"The food was delicious, healthy and always something different. "

"The welcome massage with Willie will have you melting into a puddle. "

"We spent our day off hiking through olive fields and a Stone (ghost) Village."

"I would absolutely recommend this yoga retreat to anyone looking to relax and practice yoga."

"I'd highly recommend this place - the atmosphere, Alice's and Hara's friendliness and helpfulness are outstanding and I felt home almost before arriving there as I felt so looked after already when booking. The villa faces the sea and you'll be enjoying yoga sessions at the beach as well as great food - I couldn't have found anything more suitable for my needs. The no restriction policy and "do your own thing" - approach adds a great feeling of freedom and own choice (as well regarding food - non dairy - dairy, caffeine - no caffeine). It is all up to yourself to choose, they offer lots of options - only you won't find any meat, which can be easily replaced with other protein foods to be found in the fridge. Our Yoga instructor Jocie Cox was very creative and guided us securely through beautiful Vinyasa sessions with a lot of knowledge - furthermore she offered 30 minutes of meditation at the beach every morning before the morning sessions which hooked me on daily meditation practice on my own after that. All in all I couldn't recommend the retreat higher and I'd definitely go back! One thing to mention - I'd check on the website which teacher /yoga style is booked for the week - to make sure you get the most out of it. Having most amazing memories and met people whom I'd call friends now! Happy booking!"

"I have to say that I had a GREAT time at the Just Relax yoga vacation. Alice and Hara made us feel welcome and comfortable right from the start. It was my first time going to a yoga retreat, and going to Corfu - both surpassed my expectations. The villa we stayed in was lovely, the yoga instruction was different than what I had done in the States, but was a great workout and challenged me daily. The food was amazing and all vegetarian and plentiful. And I cannot say enough about the beach and surroundings - gorgeous! As an added benefit, we were offered a welcome massage by Willi Dimmer - which was awesome after a day of travel. We were able to book more massages for later on in the week, and we all did.I am looking forward to doing this again in the near future."

    • Review by Alicia H. from Australia

"This was my first yoga retreat. I will certainly be doing more and the bar has been set very high for my next one. Alice and Hara are delightful creatures, and the retreat they have set up is a reflection of what happy, warm and friendly ladies they are. Nothing was too much trouble for the girls, they arranged a taxi to meet all those arriving together, arranged a very reasonable rental car for our day off and were always on hand if we needed anything. The house is kept spotless and I really enjoyed both of the yoga spaces. They house is huge, ample space to socialise or chill out alone. I stayed in the dorm room of 4, and even with 10 people ( 12 including our hosts who are there a lot) it never once felt crowded. You can lounge in the yard or the beach is just across the road. Zara our yoga instructor was fabulous and when we weren't practising yoga was very much one of the gang. Hara is Greek and prepares lovely Mediterranean style food for the brunch which was a highlight of every day. She makes a mean tatziki ;) There is a beach bar across the road, a small grocery and Tavernas in walking distance and the town of Acharavi is a short cycle away and has pharmacy/supermarket everything that you need. If you are undecided as to whether to book a week at Just Relax I can tell you emphatically to DO IT!!!!!"

"The retreat at Just Yoga Relax in Corfu started even before I arrived. The attention and quick response of emails, organization of taxis, etc was incredibly helpful. The location is like paradise, could walk barefoot from the beautiful house to the sand on the beach in front. The food and the house were more than one could expect, really, every little detail was taken care of. Sheets and towels were changed every two days and meals were simply delicious always with local products. The yoga classes were long and pushing and I was able to develop my strength, my knowledge about yoga and my practice in general so much in just a week. The teacher was always helpful and giving, even during break times. The day off we were also taken care of and took on a boat trip around north of the island to beautiful beaches. I can't stress enough how much joy, peace and good energy was created among every one of the attendants, the teacher and owners of the retreat. I will definitely do this again. This has been one of the best experiences in my life. I can only say thank you. Namaste. "

"This was my first solo vacation and everything went smoothly thanks to Hara and Alice. They replied instantly to my inquiry, and I felt very safe and taken care of before I arrived. They was there to welcome me when I arrived 1 am in the morning. The whole experience was great from the start to the end. The yoga places was amazing. One was at the ocean with great view and sounds from the waves. The other place was in the garden with shadow and mountain view, so it was not too hot to do yoga in the evening. The food was also very good, I never went hungry. Lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, and great new tastes. Also a very pretty island worth exploring on your day off. Over all, a very pleasant experience with wonderful people. "

"I had a wonderful, zen week at Just Relax Yoga Holidays in Corfu. The setting is beautiful - a villa with garden, terraces, hammock and is perfectly located across the street from the beach. In addition to the twice daily yoga and meditation, we had a trip to a peninsula by hike and boat with a sunset dinner overlooking the water, and an optional boat trip to Corfu Town. The meals were hearty Greek vegetarian with many delicious choices. Alice and Hara helped to arrange anything we needed and there were bikes available to use. Our group shared many laughs in the short week and we got to know each other. It was a wonderful experience! I highly recommend it."

"The Just Relax yoga holiday villa is in a great location, a <100m walk to a quiet and pretty beach which looks over the Albanian mountains. The morning yoga session was done on wooden decking on the beach overlooking the sea which was really nice. The evening yoga session was done on wooden decking in the garden in the shade. We did one evening yoga session on a beautiful rocky peninsula surround by the sea. The rooms are relatively simple but have everything you need. Breakfast and lunch were both 'help yourself' so you could eat whenever you wanted - breakfast was fruit and greek yoghurt, lunch was different dishes from local restaurants - all very good. Alice and Hara were on hand to help out with any questions you have and have a 'no problem' attitude to everything which keeps everyone focused on relaxing! Thank you so much ladies for a wonderful week."
