This retreat is all about self-nurturing, personal care, holistic lifestyle, wellbeing, and a perfect platform to build on and continue with a healthy lifestyle once when you return home.
In the beautiful and enchanting island of Mljet, which is also a national park, with its salt lakes, the retreat will take place in an old stone village right above the lakes and the national park.
Each participant will have its own beautiful apartment or its own cottage house - all the accommodation is in the stone houses which were charmingly restored and designed to be very comfortable. They all have heating, air-conditioning, as well as free Wi-Fi. All the accommodation is placed 10 to 50 meters away from the main house where yoga, meals, and cooking workshops will take the place.
During this retreat, you will experience the joy of yoga practice combined with meditation and breathing exercises, healthy cooking classes led by an Ayurvedic chef whose love and knowledge of nutritional, healthy, organic food is truly exceptional. You will also receive the booklet with recipes so that you can continue your journey on the healthy path also once when the retreat is over.

During this retreat, only a small number of participants will be accommodated in order for your host to be able to serve you in the best possible way and to care for each of the participants needs as well as to give everyone the personal attention that is needed during yoga classes as well as cooking classes.
You will be able to attend 2 yoga classes daily. The morning session will be an energizing, dynamic practice of one hour and 30 minutes for a wonderful start of the day. The morning practice will include Surya Namaskar - sun salutations.
The one-hour evening yoga session is designed with a more restorative, calmer approach to end and reflect on your day. This session may include pranayama, restorative yoga, Yin yoga, and Yoga Nidra.
The available yoga and meditation classes are suitable for everyone, from beginners to experienced yogis. They consist of the fusion of various yoga styles, including Hatha, Ashtanga, Vinyasa Flow, and elements of Kundalini, and they use breathing techniques, such as pranayama. Each session has time devoted to meditation, self-awareness, and consciousness.

You will learn how to make a few simple foods from the scratch such as healthy organic flatbreads, gluten-free bread, healthy nutritious raw breakfast, raw cake, healthy spreads, fermented foods, and healthy ice creams. Afterward, you will be able to make all of these foods at home, so that you can continue the healthy eating after you return home.
You will learn also about the nutritional value of foods, and how to implement the use of herbs in your cooking, so that it can help you to support your well-being and health long after you have returned home.

There will be an easy, slow hike to beautiful mountain Montokuc with breathtaking panoramic views - hike towards the top will be done in silence, with mobile phones turned off so that you can enjoy "forest bathing" and connect with yourself on a deeper level. This hike will be followed by a fresh fish or veggies lunch, from the garden to table, at the small local taverna next to the lake, run by the local fishermen and his wife. You will not enjoy just great food but will also eat in the amazing surrounding, your table will be just next to the lake.
All-day hiking tour through hills of Mljet with a professional guide who is a professor of history and social ecology. He is a passionate hiker, alpinist, and nature lover. During this hike, you will enjoy the lushes vegetation, breathtaking views, and have the opportunity to learn about the long history of Mljet island, as well as about the richness of Mljet’s flora and fauna.

The retreat will take place in an old stone village right above the lakes and the national park. The Mljet National Park is the oldest marine protected area in the Mediterranean and it has delighted its numerous visitors for almost 60 years with the colors and the scent of untouched nature. The Mljet National Park stretches over almost 5400 hectares, including a marine area of 500 meters from the coast, islands, and cliffs and it spans over almost a third of the island.
Two deep bays filled with seawater, known as Small Lake and Great Lake are truly amazingly beautiful with their turquoise color and crystal clear water, and they are surrounded by thick lush pine forest. The entire surface area of the park is extremely rich with life and numerous endemic and endangered species are a testament to the importance of protecting it.
The Mljet National Park will not disappoint the fans of cultural heritage either, thanks to its numerous archaeological findings and the heritage of our ancestors present in the old island settlements. There is also the Benedictine monastery located at one of the most beautiful locations of these areas, on the islet of St. Mary in the middle of Great Lake.
The island of Mljet has a long and eventful history that goes back as far as the second millennium before Christ when the Illyrians settled on the island. The first mentioning of the island of Mljet was in the manuscript The Periplus of Pseudo-Scylax from the 4th century BC stating that the Greek ships used to stop on the island for freshwater on their way to Korkyra Melaina, Issa, Pharos, etc.
Shipwrecks, amphoras, and other items from ancient times found in the sea off the coast of Mljet are evidence that there was Greek presence on the island. The island came around 35BC under the authority of the Romans, who built the third largest palace in the Adriatic (only Arena in Pula and Diocletian Palace in Split being larger), as well as the accompanying buildings: basilicas, thermal spas, arsenals, even a shipyard.
Numerous remnants from Roman times, dispersed all over the island, indicate that the island was densely populated during the rule of the Romans and reveal that the inhabitants were involved in agriculture and farming. The Narentines began their raids on the island at the end of the 8th century when they managed to occupy the eastern and central parts.
At the end of the 10th century, they had a major conflict with the Romans pushing them from the island completely. The island of Mljet became part of Zachlumia and in 1151, Pope granted the island to the Benedictine Order from the county of Apulia in Italy.
The Benedictines built a monastery and the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary on the islet in the Great Lake as well as established feudal government. Their role in the development of literacy on the island was of crucial significance and the library of the Monastery of Saint Mary was one of the richest ones in Benedictine abbeys of Dalmatia.
Since feudal fees presented a hardship for the local population, rebellions were more and more frequent therefore the Republic of Ragusa (a maritime republic centered on the city of Dubrovnik), intervened. As a result, the Statute of the Island of Mljet was formed in the 14th century which regulated services and fees owed to the abbey.
At the end of the 15th century, a count was installed on the island and a Renaissance palace was built for him. In 1806, the French troops occupied the Republic of Ragusa and two years later, the Monastery of Saint Mary was closed.
After the fall of Napoleon and to prevent the plundering of church property, England took charge but ceded the monastery to the Austrians after a very short time. The arrival of Austro-Hungary meant great progress for the island in terms of developing infrastructure and improving the quality of life.
Furthermore, the problem of large numbers of venomous snakes was solved when 12 mongooses were brought from Vienna, completely eliminating this serious danger. During the time of Austro-Hungarian governing, a project of protection of the Mljet lakes, organisms, and forests was established, named Naturschutzpark Meleda.
After the First World War, the island of Mljet was occupied by the Italians, but very soon the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes annexed the island. In the Second World War, the Italians occupied the island for a very short time until their capitulation.
It was followed by a short German occupation, and then the island became part of Yugoslavia, and eventually part of Croatia. In recent history, more precisely in 1960, a part of the island was proclaimed as a national park which also implied the status of the protection of natural and cultural heritage.

You will be enjoying three meals every day. Each meal consists of healthy, seasonal, organic, vegetarian, vegan or raw food along with freshly prepared homemade raw snack delights, detox juices and evening herbal tea. The experienced chef who is also holistic nutritionist has a true love and deep knowledge of healthy food.
He is exceptional and always loves to share his knowledge with the participants. He will concentrate on the nutritional, healthy value of the locally grown and seasonal, fresh Mediterranean food and will be spoiling you with delicious, nutritious meals with a Mediterranean touch. Please note that during this retreat, there will be no sugar used in foods, as well as no meat or alcohol.
Fruit and vegetables served during your stay will be locally-grown, seasonal, organic foods from small local ecological farms and gardens, which will be combined with freshly picked Mediterranean herbs. Additionally, since the retreat location is on the Mediterranean coast, fish can be served during one of the tours.
Bread will be homemade, using ecological flour, and the cheese will be supplied by local goat farmers. The cold-pressed extra virgin ecological olive oil from Korcula Island will be used as well to supplement the meals.
Many times, participants have special dietary requests or allergies, and the chef has to prepare an additional menu just for that person on top of regular meals. Your flight's arrival at Dubrovnik airport should not be later than 14:00. From Dubrovnik airport, you can take a bus (or a taxi), to Dubrovnik port (harbor).
At 16:00, the fast ferry/catamaran departs from Dubrovnik Port and arrives at Mljet Island at 17:15. Ferry tickets can be bought online, and Joy of the Mediterranean will happily provide you with the link where you can buy ferry tickets online. The ferry ticket costs about 15 EUR one way. Joy of the Mediterranean will pick you up upon your arrival at Mljet port and bring you to the accommodation.
In the case that you are already in Croatia prior to the retreat and you will be coming to the retreat from some other island or town in Croatia, please let Joy of the Mediterranean know and they will be glad to assist you with planning your journey to island Mljet.
On your way back to Dubrovnik, on the day when the retreat will end, you will have the catamaran at 10:45, the arrival time to Dubrovnik port is at noon. Please kindly make sure that if your flight departs from Dubrovnik the same day as the retreat finishes and that your flight is not departing before 15:00 so that you will have enough time to catch your flight.
