Korcula is an enchanting Mediterranean island belonging to the central Dalmatian archipelago. Korcula island is renowned for its crystal blue sea, lush Mediterranean vegetation of pine wood, wild herbs, orange, lemon, mandarin, and pomegranate trees, secluded little bays, and endless wild fields.

Here, you will also find olive groves, vineyards, picturesque villages, and the captivating beauty of the ancient stone town of Korcula . Many charming and breathtaking islets are surrounding the island. The natural beauty of the environment will provide a feast for your senses.

Korcula has a long, rich history. According to the legend, it was founded by the Trojan hero, Antenor, in the 12th century BC. The island was first settled by Mesolithic and Neolithic people 20,000 years ago and is well-known for its archeological finds from that era. The name of the island comes from ancient Greek times, when the Greek colonists from Corfu (Corcyra) founded a small colony on the island in the 6th century BC.

The Greeks named it Melaina Korkyra (Black Corfu) after their homeland and the dense pine wood forests that Korcula is covered with. The island became part of the Roman province of Illyricum after the Illyrian Wars (220 BC to 219 BC). Roman migration followed and Roman citizens arrived on the island.

The Great Migrations of the 6th and 7th centuries brought Slavic invasions into this region. In the 12th century, Korcula was conquered by the Venetians, incorporated briefly into the Venetian Republic, and rechristened Curzola.

The statute of Korcula was first drafted in 1214, largely guaranteeing the autonomy of the island. The town's statute also prohibited slavery, making Korcula one of the first places in the world to outlaw the practice. Today, Korcula is often called Marco Polo Island, since the town is revered for being the possible birthplace and residence of one of the greatest travelers in world's history.

"The yoga retreat combined the most unbelievable and perfect set of experiences it was possible to pack into three and a bit days! We had the enormous privilege of getting to know not one but many wonderful, special people, all of whom had realized their dreams of living outside the ratrace of commercial life. I was hugely impressed by the inner contentment and great plant knowledge of the olive grower and olive oil producer who had cleared her land herself to free the olive trees and all the other native herbs and health-giving plants. The afternoon spent at her olive farm was unforgettable. Chef Dejan’s dedication in combining all his varied knowledge of different vegan, vegetarian, and healthfood cooking to provide us with absolutely delicious meals throughout the retreat was supplemented in my case by lovingly prepared healthy teas to ensure that I would soon recover from my dreadful chest complaint; much appreciated, Dejan! My special appreciation goes to Mojca for her vision in putting together such a unique package, her untiring work on countless details throughout the retreat, her loving concern for and interest in each and every participant, and her excellent yoga sessions. "My friend and I just spent a wonderful long weekend in Korcula learning about yoga. It was a truly relaxing and uplifting experience and one that I can highly recommend. We were both quite new to yoga having dabbled in yoga and Pilates a little in the past, and found Mojca a truly inspiring and fun teacher. You will never do yoga in more beautiful surroundings usually by the sea, but once in the most amazing ecological olive grove, surrounded by fragrant plants and flowers and soft breeze. We picked a really hot week, and so the hiking that was planned we gratefully cut back a little, but this meant we had energy to swim every morning, it's truly a few steps from the house to the sea, in crystal clear waters looking up to the town of Korcula across the bay. A massage session was included and we walked to a 5-star spa and each had an hour and half massage by a very competent Ayurvedic masseuse. Heaven. Also included was an afternoon on a boat with the charming Mario, who took us around the neighbouring islands, which he had grown up in and was very knowledgable about, and then barbecued some fresh fish for us. All week we were fed delicious nutritious meals cooked by the company's own excellent chef, everything was local and freshly picked or selected and looked great too. I highly recommend anyone into yoga or thinking of getting into yoga to book this wonderful experience. I haven't even mentioned the beautiful town and island of Korcula but it's worth going just to explore them too. "

"I took a weekend retreat with my sister at Joy of the Mediterranean’s place in Korcula, Croatia, in June 2016. We both had a wonderful experience and I would highly recommend Joy of the Mediterranean. You don’t just get excellent yoga classes from Mojca. You also get fantastic food from the Joy’s five-star chef, Dejan, a blissful massage at Korcula’s luxurious spa, guided walk tours through Korcula’s fabulous old town and stunning surroundings, a fun-filled trip on a boat exploring local islands swimming and eating freshly-grilled fish cooked by the boat’s captain, and an unforgettable day exploring a local organic olive farm followed by a five star meal. All in all, magic!"

"I can definitely say that I had a truly wonderful experience during my time at the Yoga Wellness Weekend. The location was really beautiful. The food was amazing, prepared with love and great knowledge and understanding by Dejan. I really felt nourished when I ate his creations."

"The Ayervedic treatment was wonderful. I felt and looked ten years younger afterwards."

"The excursion to the olive grove was fun and informative. It is a beautiful setting for yoga despite a little trouble from the cats, but that just made the experience more memorable. And the food at olive grove owner’s house afterwards was outstanding. It really was a feast. The yoga with Mojca is awesome. I felt so warmly welcomed by her. She is a beautiful person with a lot of knowledge and experience of yoga. I learned so much from her without ever feeling that I was being spoken down to or patronized. She has a great sense of humor and made me laugh a lot, which is not always the case while being taught yoga by someone of her calibre. She really is an inspirational person. I feel very privileged to have been able to take part in the weekend. Thank you so much."

"I spent a week with Mojca and Yoga on the beautiful island of Korcula in Croatia. The week exceeded all my expectations. My room was lovely, just a few steps from the water so I could easily take a morning swim. Everything was clean and safe in Korcula, which made it easier for me to really relax. Our lovely chef created the most tasteful, nourishing, organic and self-made dishes I have tasted. I didn't go hungry and my body was happy :) . The yoga classes were well planned, conducted and were always in time, appreciated. Mojca is a kind but in a subtle way determined teacher that respects you as you are. She took into account the few wishes we had, like to teach me head stand! There was a balanced amount of information about the yoga "principles" and the classes varied enough to keep you alert but not too relaxed. I found all Mojca's instructions understandable and clear and the idea of different locations for the practises lovely. The activities besides yoga and the meals were also well organised and there were alternatives when the weather didn't e.g. allow cycling. The trip to an olive grove where we had the evening yoga was extra ordinary and the visit to another island both exciting and relaxing. To put my experience of the week in one word: Beautiful. Thank you"

"The weekend was absolutely incredible! The whole experience was just amazing. Mojca felt like an old friend. We had lots to talk about. She was knowledgeable about the island and history which was super interesting to us. The olive grove was also an amazing experience. We love learning about plants/herbs and what they can do for your body. It was just amazing. Then practicing yoga under the olive trees and next to the sea was just so cool! There was enough amazing food with everything handmade and from the garden. Thinking about it makes my mouth water :) "

"The weekend was splendid. I can't say enough amazing things about it. . "

"Thanks for offering such a wonderful weekend. We'll never forget it. "

"It is amazing what you can get out of four short days. On arrival, it was clear we had made the right decision about how to spend the first few days of our holiday. The combination of yoga, the events arranged for us, the truly divine food, and the great company of Dejan, Mojca, and Nancy was a total treat. I have practiced yoga for some time and my partner had not done much yoga before. We both learned from Mojcas teaching and enjoyed classes that challenged and rested us, held at a beautiful secret waterside location. The range of trips, treats, and events made exploring Korcula and beyond hassle-free, opening up some experiences we probably would not have had otherwise. Dejan is a host and chef extraordinaire! He is a regarded chef, whose deep passion for fresh, healthy, and tasty food brings him to these retreats for the summer months. I have never met anyone so particular about creating the best food from source to plate, and on top of that, he is a true gentleman. All in all, I did not want to leave at the end and felt like I had had a week of holiday after three days. If none of the above appeals to you, go for the team. I am glad to have come to Joy of the Mediterranean just to have met these three wonderful, fun, and generous people."

We enjoyed yoga at the beach, a boat trip, the quiet hikes in the beautiful surroundings, all the informations about the island and the wild herbs, the unbelievable tasty food, and a really perfect massage. We laughed a lot during the retreat and had good talks; all in all recommendable! We would always chose again for this experience and these beautiful people. Thanks a lot! It was magic."

"What a great experience! Let's take things one by one. The first contact was by email, with Medeja, who was so helpful giving me all details I needed for the trip and for organization. Then, Mojca entered the scene asking me questions so as to be able to know me a bit regarding my yoga practice, food preferences, and so on. The color was already given: a personalized service given by people loving what they do! When I arrived in the lovely island of Korcula, I was immediately in love with the place and warmly welcomed by Mojca. My room was 20 seconds away from a nice spot to swim; a real dream. Yoga classes were excellent, given in different lovely spots. Having them in a small group was a very special experience. She could give what we needed to feel good and to improve according to where we are at that moment. And on top of that, all the extras were of top quality and total pleasure for me: the long and beautiful massage I will never forget, the boat trip, the walking starting from the house, the discovery of the olive grove, and the dinner at the farm. Everything optional (would be a shame to miss it, but you have the choice, it's all about you). Of course Dan is not to be forgotten. Our cook was preparing us our morning juice and our meals with so much care, creativity, and love. My final word is to say thank you to all the team and participants; it was a privilege to spend those few days with you."

"The Joy of the Mediterranean yoga course is the perfect mix of strengthening postures, meditation, and relaxation. Our teacher, Mojca, the course's founder, was very attentive to the needs of everyone in the group and was very good at providing guidance and explanation, as well as encouragement to explore your personal boundaries whatever your standard. There is really nothing better than unfolding your mat every morning to the stunning backdrop of sea and mountains in Korcula; the surroundings are second to none. The accommodation was a good distance away from the bustling Korcula town and more conducive to relaxing and swimming at a safe distance from the big boats. The food was absolutely excellent: from the freshly cooked vegetarian meals provided at home every day to the, local agro-tourism trip to a local farm restaurant, and the home-cooked dinner at the hoouse of Dianne, who owns the wonderful ecological farm we visited - the food was an absolute highlight. The boat trip excursion was also great and shouldn't be missed! I would absolutely recommend Joy of the Mediterranean to all yogis, whatever your standard. I came home feeling relaxed and rejuvenated and I can't wait to go back!"

"I had a very relaxing getaway weekend at Korcula! Great staff and hospitality. I enjoyed everything, especially the relaxing atmosphere, beautiful views, and nice hiking and tours. Yoga was just right for me and especially meditation. The only thing I missed was bottled water and maybe tea and some fruits or nuts in the room, and more strict detox and raw food meals! I did not expect to have white bread, pasta, or potatoes, or tastings of alcohol; olive oil tasting would be more suitable and maybe some snacks while waiting for dinner (which was running a bit too late every night). Fantastic massage! But 90 minutes would be more than enough. I missed some free time for relaxing on my own. Maybe one tour could be optional on Saturday or Sunday. Also, I missed out on the first session of yoga on Thursday, when I arrived at 18:30 with the only boat from Dubrovnik. Maybe start yoga a little later and shorter session the first day so everyone can join and have a later dinner and / or some snacks before. I can and will warmly recommend Joy of Mediterranean, and will be glad to come again soon! This trip was much needed and I feel re-energized and stronger! Thank you!"
