This is one of the most popular yoga retreats offered in Indonesia.
Joglo Gumuk offers a yoga / Pilates experience intertwined with cultural workshops to learn about traditional Javanese practices. Their retreats can be completely private if you wish to - or shared with a small group. The facility includes a well-equipped yoga and Pilates studio with beautiful views over rice farmlands. They can design an individual package for you if you wish to, besides the schedule drafted. On-demand, there is also the possibility to have Pilates sessions on the mat and with an apparatus (chair and springboard). The schedule includes small workshops in jamu (traditional herbal drink making), Javanese cooking class, and traditional shadow puppet making in the nearby village. This yoga holiday is situated in a beautiful location outside of Yogyakarta in the middle of farmlands with rice fields.
The houses are settled within a lush garden with shading trees. When they discovered this land, they immediately fell in love with the giant jackfruit-, breadfruit-, and teakwood trees, which offer look-throughs into the vast landscape of rice fields. In the center, there are two fishponds and a big bamboo tree. They created a tropical garden around the trees and fishponds and situated some places to rest, read, meditate, exercise, observe nature, and enjoy the view.
Rumah Gladak – this is how the house is historically named – has originally been used to store and dry rice grains. They placed this sweet little house in a nice spot of their land with a vast view over the rice fields. Rumah Gladak is a cozy, simply furnished space with a bamboo bed of 140 x 200 centimeters – perfect for one person or one couple. Adjunct to the house is a private, open-air bathroom integrated into a small tropical garden. A few steps away from Rumah Gladak is a small kitchen for your private use, equipped with a small fridge, basic kitchen tools, coffee, tea, and a small dining area surrounded by the garden.
Omah Ki Tamat also used to be a rice barn and placed with direct view in the farmlands. Omah Ki Tamat is a little bit more spacious in the sleeping room with a bed of 160 x 200 m size. It has a tiny kitchen, suitable for preparing tea and coffee and simple dishes. The private bathroom has a roof (for guests who prefer a closed bathroom as an alternative to the open-air garden variant of Rumah Gladak). The bathroom and kitchen are designed from local tiles crafted in the village nearby.
Workshop in the nearby village of a master shadow puppet maker.
Geddyla Tridecana is since 2017 a licensed teacher trainer in Hatha yoga, YinYang flow, trigger point release technique, and wall rope yoga in Yogyakarta. She also got special training in Ayurveda and currently teaches at Villa Borobodur, Tentrem Hotel, Fitbox Studio, Alive Studio, M.co Studio, and ViaVia Guesthouse.
The retreat is located around 8 kilometers south of Yogyakarta in the area of Bangungjiwo. The village of Gendeng is directly in front of beautiful farmlands of rice fields and vegetables. The retreat location is surrounded by villages, which produce diverse local handicrafts such as Wayang Kulit shadow puppets (shadaw theater puppets), Kayu Batik (a batik technique applied to wood), and pottery.
