Relax in eco-luxury rooms, each with a beachfront view, including an award-winning oceanfront treehouse. Immerse yourself in nature, yoga, and relaxation and rejuvenate and connect to your soul. Combining simple elegance with natural beauty and a commitment to improving the environment and the local community, Playa Viva is a sustainable boutique hotel located on the western coast of Mexico.

Nestled between the sparkling waters of the Pacific Ocean and the majestic Sierra Madre Mountains near the village of Juluchuca, Playa Viva is situated on a mile of pristine and private beach. The property’s nearly 200 acres includes an estuary, an Aztec archeological site, a turtle sanctuary, and a coastal forest and mangrove ecosystem that supports an array of stunning wildlife.

Playa Viva is close enough to the trappings of modernity yet worlds away providing immersion into the wonders of nature and escape to utter private relaxation. All of Playa Viva’s rooms have unobstructed ocean views and private bathrooms. Depending on if you are traveling alone or plan to share your room, there are options for singles, double, and triples.

Playa Viva food is best described as "healthy Mexican," with a focus on traditional Mexican meals cooked with minimal oil and healthy and local ingredients; incorporating as many organics as possible and growing as much food onsite as possible on the three-acre farm. Dietary restrictions can be accommodated. Please be sure to note these in your registration document.

None of the casitas have artificial air-conditioning. The only air-conditioning available is from the natural breeze flowing in from the ocean. The casitas are engineered to maximize the flow of air, minimize the heat effect from the sun, and make the environment as pleasant as possible.

This will be a 25-hour training moving from the outside in, a deep dive into the journey through the koshas. The practice of yoga and meditation helps you to untangle the many layers of your being. In this six-day training, Joan will guide you through the outermost layer, known as the Anamaya Kosha, and end with accessing your deepest layer, known as the Anandamaya Kosha, your heart center.

Each day will open with long practice, intertwining asana, pranayama, and meditation. You will take your time as you explore each layer that the practice of yoga can offer. After practice, enjoy a long brunch, relax by the ocean, and take a dunk in the pool!

You will have access to massage, a vast beachfront view, and quiet spots to help you relax and rejuvenate. The day will finish with a discussion on the practice and the topic of the day, followed by a quiet restoring practice in the early evening. Dinner will end the day and unwind by watching the sunset and enjoying relaxing vibes from a like-minded community of yogis!

Daily itinerary

Day 1: Opening practice and orientation

You will begin with a grounding practice at 4 p.m., followed by an introduction circle. Joan will introduce the koshas and the first layer, the Anamaya Kosha, the outermost layer.

Day 2: Exploring the outer layer and moving towards the energetic body

You will explore twisting postures and the nadis. Pranayama will be intertwined as you move from the outside in. Joan will introduce the energetic body known as the Pranamaya Kosha. Practice will finish at 10 a.m. and brunch and relaxation will follow. You will meet up again at 4:30 p.m. for a discussion on pranayama, including the nadies and vayus, that help to transport prana. The day will end with a pranayama practice followed by dinner and sunset.

Day 3: Your inner body

Practice will start at 7 a.m. with a brief meditation before moving into an inversion practice. Inversions help you access your pranayama kosha and balance out your nervous system. They can also bring up fear, so learning to watch and observe your thoughts are key.

You will explore the gunas and your mental fluctuations and end with a meditation. You will meet up again at 4:30 p.m. and discuss the Manamaya Kosha and learn about the energies that fluctuate here and the difference between our lower and higher minds. You will close with restoratives and a meditation practice before heading to dinner and sunset.

Day 4: Moving through fear with lightness

You will begin the day at 7 a.m. with an energizing practice including pranayama techniques to energize the system and introduce the bandhas. You will move into an arm balances practice which helps to build confidence and strength. You will discuss the bandhas and how they help you access lightness and ease in challenging postures.

You will also discuss the asmita (ego) and how when active, can increase the tendencies towards the lower mind. Brunch and relaxation will follow. The class will meet up again at 4:30 p.m. and you will discuss how to develop your inner witness through accessing your higher mind called the Vijnamaya Kosha. You will close with a quiet Yin and Restorative practice before moving into a mediation. Dinner and Sunset will follow.

Day 5: Accessing your hearts

You will open the day at 7 a.m. moving into back bending and inversion practice. When practiced with awareness, backbends can have many positive benefits on your system and leave you feeling rejuvenated and open. You will discuss what the Anandamaya Kosha, which is your bliss layer that connects you to your heart center, and how it can be accessed through practice.

Brunch and relaxation will follow. You will meet up again at 4:30 p.m. and discuss the highest practice of all, surrender. They say in the Yoga Sutras, that if you can learn to surrender, you’ve mastered the higher wisdom that yoga is teaching you. You will do some journaling and a discussion before closing with a meditation practice and a gratitude circle. Dinner and sunset will follow along with a closing circle by the bonfire.

Day 6: Integration and closing

Practice will begin at 8 a.m. and include a well-rounded practice, helping you to integrate everything you’ve learned. Hugs, goodbyes, and a photo before everyone departs. At Playa Viva, you can take your time leaving to soak in the exquisite nature of this special place.
