Consisting of sunrise and sunset yoga sessions in an exclusive, relaxed, and intimate beach setting with sea views, your retreat includes twice daily yoga outdoor yoga sessions led by Jo Fox. The yoga sessions take place on a sun deck overlooking the ocean and in between sessions you'll have plenty of time for yourself to enjoy long walks barefoot along the deserted palm fringed beach, relax with a book soaking up the sun and the scenery or you may chose to opt in for an activity or excursion such as snorkeling or a tour of one of the islands' spice farms.

  • Jo Fox

Jo Fox is an internationally accredited yoga teacher who has recently relocated to London after almost a decade in Zanzibar, Tanzania, East Africa, where she ran a well-known yoga business holding group classes, kids classes, and private classes. She also ran a number of safari and beach yoga retreats in some really spectacular places in and around the island, as well as on Tanzania's mainland. Jo first sat on a yoga mat about 20 years ago and since then, it has been in and out of her life, but in the last decade, most definitely in.

This retreat will take place in Zanzibar, Tanzania. Zanzibar is an East African island archipelago, just off the coast of Tanzania's mainland. Explorers such as Livingstone and Stanley began their journeys to the interior of Africa from Zanzibar, and the Sultans of Oman made the island their capital.

Known as the original global village, for a millennia it has attracted a colorful diversity of seafaring - and now airfaring - people who come to discover, to trade, to escape, and to seek fortunes, love and enlightenment - and who mingle and make their home here.

The following dietary requirements are served and/or catered for:

  • Regular (typically includes meat and fish)
  • Other dietary requirements on request

There will also be the opportunity to visit Stone Town and explore the labyrinth of streets and alleyways, viewing some of the Zanzibar doors, and picking up souvenirs.

There are no regimented routines to Back to Nature Yoga Retreats. They simply want you to enjoy your retreat, take as much time for yourself as you need, or chose to share activities with the group. "Jo is a fantastic teacher and our retreat in Skinnskatteberg, Sweden was truly marvelous. She is really good at adapting the class so that it suits all participants no matter what level they are on. I hope that I get the chance to practice with her again!"

"Had a wonderful time here getting back to nature and meeting some really lovely ladies. Jo was a great yoga teacher as was her assistant, Lisa! Jo was sensitive to all levels and did a bit extra for those yogis who wanted to be pushed a bit further. Lisa was great with her gentle adjustments and head massage! It was also great to be introduced to a new country and location. Would definitely recommend!"

"My sister and I had a really positive experience at Jo's February 2016 Swedish yoga retreat. Great yoga practice, amazing venue, and lovely people. There was an onsite caterer who served incredible vegan cuisine and the natural surroundings of the lake and forest in the snow were heavenly."

"I am very happy I booked a class and retreat with Jo during my stay in Zanzibar. Jo has a great way of teaching, and a nice voice. She keeps her classes small in order to give everyone personal attention, so you are sure you will enhance your poses and posture when you join her class. I had my first lesson with her 2 days after my flight to Zanzibar. After the class, I immediately felt the difference in my posture and I felt much more relaxed. I highly recommend booking a class of yoga with Jo during your stay at Zanzibar!"

"I did 2 classes with Jo during my trip to Zanzibar. It was an amazing experience to do all fresco yoga with a cool breeze pleasantly washing over you! Jo knows just how to run a class with differing abilities helping when needed and pushing you to your individual level. I would thoroughly recommend a yoga class with Jo on your trip to Zanzibar - whether its to escape the hustle and bustle of Stone Town or to stretch your limbs after lazing around on the beach!"

"Let me talk about how awesome our yoga teacher Jo is. She has so much knowledge and experience, which shows through her classes and she knows each persons strengths and weakness. She knows exactly when to challenge you and doesn't over do it. I couldn't have asked for a better and awesome teacher. Not only she teaches the yoga positions with excellency, but also gives importance to meditating and breathing during sessions. If you are in Zanzibar, you should definitely take a yoga class with Jo. You won't regret it!"

"Jo very kindly picked my partner and I up at the airport and gave us a private lesson on the verandah of her sea front home. We felt very welcome. A great yoga session followed by a swim in the sea and a very helpful chat with Jo. She recommended places to go and even made bookings for us. A wonderful way to start our holiday. Thank you, Jo. Hope to meet up again."

"Fantastic and amazing yoga. I enjoyed three times on two places, a private place in Matembwe and at last, at the Mbwendi Ruins. For me, it was a perfectly mixed yoga with deeply relaxing and meditation on an paradise place. Jo is a beautiful teacher with a handsome kind for all. Thank you, Jo."

"We did 2 classes with Jo when we were on Zanzibar, mainly to stay a bit active in an otherwise fairly lazy week on the beach. Jo came to our hotel and took a private class for the 2 of us. It was more energetic yoga than we were used to, but tailored to exactly what we wanted."

"After such a nice session, we went along to the evening class Jo runs at the ruins near Stone Town. Beautiful. A good class with mixed abilities, but everyone got attention and we were made to feel very welcome. The setting is stunning as was yoga with view of the ocean on the first time. Can't recommend the experience highly enough for novices, complete beginners, intermediates, or advanced students. You will have fun."

"We worked a lot on the different positions and she even helped me to improve my headstand. I recommend her courses to everyone who would like to work on their yoga skills (beginners or more advanced) in a nice surrounding like Zanzibar. Jo is a skilled teacher who gives you confidence and corrects you in your positions, if needed."

Combine that with the most beautiful setting for the class and you have an experience that you never will forget. Just remember to bring your camera, you definitely want to bring pictures of the site and the yoga class with you home."

"I am currently in holiday in Zanzibar and wanted to keep in touch with my yoga practice, so I found Jo on Google. For 20 USD, you are treated to an all level practice for 1.5 hours in the amazing Mbweni Ruins, just outside of town. Jo is a very knowledgable teacher who knows how to push everyone to his or her own limits, including me, who she had just met for the first time! If you are looking for yoga in Zanzibar, I highly recommend Jo. I hope to be back next time. Also, don't forget your insect repellant and towel! Mats, blocks, and straps are provided."

"I have been devoting more and more time to yoga recently, so when I saw that there was a yoga retreat being offered near Kilimanjaro, I jumped at the chance to attend. Jo is one of the best teachers I have had, and her patience and guidance really helped me improve my practice and start setting new goals. Jo is extremely knowledgeable and is able to give both modifications for poses, as well as pushing you to achievements you didn't know you were capable of! I look forward to attending Jo's classes in Zanzibar, as well as her next retreat!"

"Had an incredible few weeks being taught by Jo, whilst traveling solo in Tanzania. She is a very gifted teacher who knows exactly how far to push you, but does this all with kindness and fun. I am really missing my daily fix now back in the UK! She also runs retreats and I was lucky enough to join her at the Ndarkwai Ranch at the end of my holiday for a magical few days of safari and yoga."

"When in Zanzibar, she teaches in the very atmospheric ruins at Mbweni Ruins Hotel, which is not to be missed! Although sadly it rained the week I was there, I did get a 1 on 1 session at the end of the jetty at the hotel, which was wonderful."

"I was passing through Stone Town for a day, and seeking out yoga wherever I travel and I found Jo and managed to fit in a class at the Mbweni Ruins. And, I am so happy I did, as it turned out to be one of the highlights of my trip! Such beautiful, peaceful surroundings at the ruins, unlike anywhere I had ever practised before. Jo is clearly an experienced teacher, offering modifications for all levels enabling a diverse group of yogis to practise together."

"I told Jo about my background in the Ashtanga tradition and she went out of her way to ensure the class was sufficiently dynamic and helped me to try some more challenging poses that I hadn't attempted before, which I really enjoyed. Thank you Jo for a truly amazing class and I really hope to be able to visit again soon! (p.s. if you have time, I would also recommend spending a few hours enjoying the beautiful beach near the ruins, a perfect way to relax before or after class)."
