Tom Hunt

After ten years of battling the pressure that comes with existing as a cog-in-the-wheel of large multinational corporations, Tom owes much gratitude to his immediate family, his wife, and sister, both practicing yoga instructors, who helped direct him towards a more fulfilling path in life. Tom felt like his spirits were immediately lifted ever since he attended his first yoga class and a new invigoration for life has been with him ever since.

Louise Hunt

Louis started her yoga journey in 1997 after stumbling across a class in a gym where she was teaching aerobics. She is an experienced instructor, British Wheel of Yoga qualified, and has been teaching classes and workshops since 2001. She also holds the BSY Hatha and BSY pre and post natal yoga diplomas as well as being a relax kids coach for any budding yogis out there. As a teacher, she feels honored to share her studies and love of yoga with her students. She aims for everyone to leave her classes feeling healthier and happier than they were when they walked in.

"Great yoga facilities and classes and a nice little town."

The one yoga class I did attend was good. The first guesthouse I stayed at (Glendevon) was run by really friendly people. The spa facilities were pretty good and everyone was very accommodating.

"Yoga with the sounds of seagulls "

Sidmouth is a small, quiet seaside town on the south coast of Devon. I stayed at the Hotel Elizabeth on the esplanade overlooking the English Channel. Fortunately, the weather was pleasant though a bit chilly. Everyone was wrapped up. I enjoyed walking around the neighborhood and the surrounding countryside. The population of Sidmouth, locals and tourists appeared to be mainly older folks whose demeanor was a bit like the weather. This environment provided an opportunity for slowing down and exploring personal elements of yoga practice like listening and accepting. The hosts, Louise and Tom, are energetic, knowledgeable and passionate instructors who integrate the retreat experience within their studio schedule. This consists of a mix of offerings from restorative and Yin to vinyasa and Ashtanga (of which Louise is an enthusiastic proponent). The studio is well appointed with all of the props and space for an enjoyable yoga experience. During the quiet times, I was particularly drawn to the sounds of the seagulls.

The classes were good but sometimes a little too challenging. I loved the hydrotherapy session and the hotel was clean and comfortable and the staff were lively and very helpful

"The perfect break away "

I loved the variety of classes available and the welcoming atmosphere provided by Louise and Tom. They provided a lovely welcome pack with information on local walks etc, which was very thoughtful. The guesthouse was fantastic, very hospitable hosts with a great breakfast to start each day off perfectly. I would thoroughly recommend to anyone of any yoga ability, as there really is something for everyone available, and Tom and Louise were wonderful instructors

"Lovely get away"

The food in the hotel was lovely, the WiFi actually worked which is a miracle. A lot of large hotels I’ve been to in London for example, the internet is restricted to only browser use but I’m glad Sidmouth is in the 21st century. The yoga classes were wonderfully chilled out and really well lead, just what I needed. Lots of classes throughout the day to try, so you can schedule your day around them. Excellent area for all useful things you may need, can walk everywhere in Sidmouth. I really recommend the hydra pool spa time with a treatment, and Seabrease beauty is really good too. Overall I had a lovely time for a much needed time to chill out :)

"I cannot recommend this enough!"

Overall, this was the perfect yoga retreat. Beautiful location with lots of lovely walks nearby, a very comfortable hotel with lovely staff (The Hotel Elizabeth) and of course, amazing yoga. There was a range of yoga classes so I got to try a few different styles, including Vinyasa, Iyengar, Hatha and Kundalini. Tom and Louise made me feel right at home and were very helpful both in classes and outside, providing lots of helpful information on the local area. I felt very supported and encouraged in my yoga practice. It was the perfect mix of time in classes and also time in the day to explore this beautiful part of the world. If you need a relaxing break, definitely do this! The Hotel was lovely, great food and excellent value for money. And having a sea view and being able to fall asleep listening to the waves was just perfect :)

"First yoga break exactly what I wanted"

Louise and Tom have a lovely studio, extensive range of yoga and are knowledgable and passionate teachers. I very much liked that they had such a wide range of people participating in classes and that there is a genuinely inclusive ethos. I throughly enjoyed every class I took, learnt something new in all of them and left with a renewed enthusiasm for my yoga practice.

"Perfect 'Me Time'"

The classes were extremely good with a lot of variety of yoga styles I've not tried before. The atmosphere in the studio was lovely and the location and scenery were just wonderful. Yes in theory you could book accommodation and find a local yoga studio and do it all separate but if you want to guarantee good classes, spectacular location and really lovely accommodation then this is perfect. It's not a normal retreat where you all eat together etc but I wanted a get away by myself from the stress of London and I came back feeling positive and refreshed. I will likely go again.

"Perfect Break Away"

The accommodation that Tom & Louise had arranged for us was amazing, they took time and trouble to upgrade our hotel. The food there was out of this world. Also included was a visit to the spa which was lovely. The yoga itself was exactly what we needed, not too challenging but not too easy. Everything they arranged for us was perfect and nothing was too much trouble. I would highly recommend. Thanks Tom & Louise.

"Great break for down time and yoga"

Sidmouth is a lovely characterful town. Yoga classes only a few minutes from the hotel. Good mix of yoga classes in differing styles. Good instructors. Hotel good - room comfortable, staff great and food excellent.

"Eat Chips, Love"

It was a perfect retreat for someone who wants to explore yoga without the pressure of 'having an epiphany'. The Jala flow retreat offers a truly flexible experience - you can practice, meditate, transform yourself as much or as little as you like. Louise and Tom are wonderfully welcoming and supportive, but totally unobtrusive. They allow individuals to 'retreat' in the way that's right for them.

In between yoga sessions the beautiful seaside location helps you find a different kind of zen. Spectacular coastline, a totally unpretentious scene (the cool kids aren't hanging out in Sidmouth and Sidmouth's all the better for it), and the world class fish & chips are Enlightenment in a paper bag.

"A lovely 3 days"

It was just a great experience from someone who hadn't done much yoga beforehand. I didn't feel out of place as there was always good clear instructions led by both teachers, Louise & Tom. Tired lots of different styles of yoga throughout the 3 days which has given me a great insight to yoga itself, I only thought there was 1!

I would recommend to anyone.

"Yoga Retreat at Jala Flow Yoga and Glendevon Guesthouse "

I really enjoyed my stay both in terms of the accommodation and the yoga classes. The classes were a balanced mix of restorative and more fast paced yoga. I liked the instructors, Louise and Tom were very attentive and competent. Sidmouth is a quiet town at the sea, a lovely place to relax. It's also a great place for coastal walks, very scenic. I will recommend this retreat to friends and would come back myself.

I don't normally write hotel reviews but the staff at the hotel were exceptionally friendly and chatty and we felt very comfortable at the hotel. We went there for a yoga retreat and weren't sure what to expect but the hotel was just a few minutes from the yoga venue and the room had a lovely sea view which added to the relaxation. I would be very happy to return.

On Wednesday I decided it was time for a break. On Friday I was driving down to Sidmouth Devon to check into the Glendevon Guest House in Cotmaton Road.

I had looked at this Yoga Retreat earlier in the summer, but wasn't sure of my availability. I decided two days before hand that I would spend the weekend in Devon and book via Jalaflow.

Louise handled all of my booking on short notice, arranged my guesthouse for two nights, a spa session on the Friday at Aspara spa for after my arrival, plus also a first time Reki session in Beer at the Green Room Healing with Sandy, for Saturday afternoon - all of which were fab.

Rod and Lesley made me feel very welcome to their guesthouse of 2 years, making me a lovely cuppa on my arrival, with Rod even walking me down to the town so show me where everything was that I needed over the weekend starting with the spa!

Spa was great (remember your swimming costume - if not there is a swimming pool nearby where you can buy one - ashamed face!) lovely start to the weekend.

Unfortunately, arriving after lunch means you miss the morning yoga, but first session was 8.30 (for 75 mins) Saturday morning after a cracking breakfast rustled up by Lesley then session two was also run by Mel at Jalaflow for another 75 minutes. The Studio is easy to find in town (which is small and mainly consists of two main roads of shops) the studio feels calming and the classes are not too busy, Mel was great and also really welcoming.

Sidmouth is a small town but there are plenty of 'treasures' to be found, a couple of lovely housey type shops, The Cheese Board, lovely coffee shops and restaurants in little nooks and cranny's if you keep your eyes open. I eat in the Anchor pub Friday early evening after the spa - which was very busy - after stopping at anther pub nearer the front which was even busier to deciding to just pop into somewhere else on route back to the guest house. Dinner was quick and sufficient, staff were busy but polite and accommodating to find me a seat without a booking - so no real complaints here.

After a wonderful fish platter lunch in Cafe Mocca on the sea front, Saturday afternoon I headed over to Beer which is a tiny fishing village with character. The beaches are stony in both Sidmouth and Beer - I bought home a roughly shaped heart shaped stone found in Sidmouth. There were tea rooms and pub (and ice cream parlours in Beer but I was there for the Green Room Healing run by Sandy.

Sandy can be found at the very bottom of Long Hill, just behind the bus stop (I was half way up the very steep hill on foot - before realising this). Sandy was fabulous. She really knows her stuff, was very welcoming and provided me with a fantastic hour of treatment which was amazing. I have never had this before and would totally recommend this to ANYONE. I also slept like a baby Saturday night - whether that was the yoga, the sea air, the hill, the comfy bed or the Reki - I don't mind - it was a great nights sleep and I was grateful.

Sunday morning started off with another cracking breakfast by Lesley and Rod, followed by a visit back to the Jalaflow studio and treated to a 75 minute session with Louise, as Bill who was scheduled was away. A great session of hot Ying Yang yoga to really sort me out before another potter along the beach with a green tea and the drive home.

My only complaint - I wish it was all nearer - I might have to move :)
