During this retreat, you will stay in the Starpine Lodge. New and fresh, the lodge is set in a beautiful garden, giving you the feeling of space and calmness with the ocean in front and the Sintra Mountains raising behind you and just around the corner from the Praia Grande Beach among other along the coast line.

Starpine is a superb yoga house which has been totally refurbished and part of it renovated this year including creating a new swimming pool and a yoga shala in the garden with sea view. The annex next to the main house has been turned into three beautiful double and twin rooms with private bath and direct view to the garden and pool.

The main house has a large terrace for alfresco dinning including an outdoor barbecue area with view to the pool and the yoga shala at the end of the garden. The lodge also offers you a separate kitchen fully equipped where you can store your food and drinks and cook if needed.

You will find the communal area on the ground floor with a living room and fireplace, dining area, kitchen, and reception. The rooms in the main building are all on the first floor with views. There are five double or twin rooms, two with sea view and three with Sintra view both sharing two separate bathrooms.

The practice of yoga is an ideal way to balance the stresses of modern day living, helping you stay healthy and young in body, mind, and spirit. Yoga nourishes the organic body through the practice of asanas (postures), brings clarity to the mind, and keeps the body strong, supple, and healthy.

Annett has been teaching for more than 17 years and six years of running her retreats in Portugal. She has a good eye for the students’ needs and you can make sure you are in good hands.

Yoga

You will have a two-hour long asana morning class and one and a half hour long restorative class in the afternoon. The yoga sessions are taking place in the new yoga shala and suitable for all levels including beginners with some yoga experience as well as intermediate level.

The groups are small and there is time for personal attention to each student, so all students personally benefit and work on their individual challenges. If you are a beginner, the aim is to make you well-versed on the important basics. Meanwhile, the more advanced yoginis are assisted in evolving and working on their individual issues.

Yoga sessions are held at the new beautiful yoga shala at the Starpine Lodge, set up with all equipment needed including mats, foam blocks, bricks, belts, blankets, and chairs. Iyengar yoga uses all these props to help you practice the poses safely. The classes are taught in English and in Danish.

Stand up paddle boarding

If you’ve never been on a stand-up paddleboard, don’t be discouraged. The classes are suitable for beginners. Note that paddle boards are extremely stable and built for you to balance on them. Your instructor will know how to get you up on the board and show you the proper ways to paddle for momentum, how to stop, and how to turn.

The classes will take place in Cascais Bay with the paddle surf school in charge of taking you our on the floating mat. You will be transported from the lodge to Cascais and back with also the opportunity to pay Cascais a visit, shopping, having lunch, or just laying low on the beach before returning to Colares.

You will go on a trip to Cascais for stand up paddling.

  • Annett Mottlau

B.K.S. Iyengar Yoga Institute Junior Intermediate I (Iyengar Yoga)

Annett Mottlau is a certified Iyengar yoga teacher from the B.K.S. Iyengar Yoga Institute in Amsterdam. Her admiration for the Iyengar yoga technique and philosophy behind the teaching has always inspired her in her practice as well as her teaching.

This retreat will take place in the little traditional village of Colares, a nice place to have a coffee or a meal and enjoy its quiet charm and local market. Colares is one of the nicest small towns in the area where Portugal is still Portugal.

Nearby places

  • Cascais, 19 kilometers - 20 minutes
  • Lisbon, 50 kilometers - 40 minutes
  • Praia Grande Beach - 1 minute
  • Sintra - 10 minutes

During your stay at this summer retreat, you will be served tea, nuts, and fruits before the morning classes and a healthy breakfast after including fresh juices, tea, and coffee. You will have a lunch pack every day and four delicious vegetarian dinners during the week. For the remaining evenings, you may explore the amazing restaurants in the area with some help from Iyoga Portugal if needed.

During your free time, you have a wide range of options: you can enjoy the wonderful beaches, marvel at the amazing scenery of the Sintra-Cascais natural park, and take a trip to Cascais and Estoril, two charming fishing villages, or simply visit Lisbon, the capital of Portugal and one of the oldest cities in the world. There are mountain bikes available free of charge at the lodge for short trips. Longer trips can be organized on site.

Beaches

The extensive Praia Grande and its little sister, the scenic Praia Pequena, with its steep cliffs are only a short walk from the lodge. There you will find small local restaurants. Take a short bike ride or a 20-minute walk and you get to Praia das Macas, a nice little beach with a little village that offers restaurants and cafe shops.

Besides these more well-known beaches, the area also has some more hidden bays on offer where even on a summer Sunday you will hardly find any people - that is, if you don't mind a little hike down the cliffs. In a radius of 30 kilometers to the south, east, and north, you will find dozens of more beaches, bays, and reefs offering perfect conditions for all kinds of water sports.

Cascais

Formerly a small local fishing village, Cascais is situated approximately 25 kilometers north of Lisbon and 19 kilometers from Colares (20 minutes by taxi from Colares) and remains local, set on the waterfront, and is connected by a string of smaller urban beaches with the next town Estoril.

You can walk the whole way along the sea (paredo), stop at various beaches to either soak in the lifestyle with a bica (coffee) or have a lunch or dinner at the beach restaurants where fresh fish and seafood are served. There are plenty of cultural activities in the area such as museums. In the narrow cobble stoned walking streets and towns squares, you will find open air fairs and shops.

Lisbon

A visit to Lisbon is also a must. The Portuguese capital is one of the oldest cities in the world and less than a 40-minute drive from the lodge. Rich in architecture and culture, it’s also a very vibrant city and a must-see for everybody coming to Portugal. It can be easily reached from the camp for a day trip by train from Sintra.

Sintra-Cascais Natural Park

The Natural Park of Sintra-Cascais, spreading out from the mountains of Sintra to the beaches of Cascais, represents a unique diversity of landscape and without doubt the most breathtaking region in Portugal. It includes sand dunes, rugged coastline with high cliffs and sandy bays, dense forests and calm lakes, with the majestic Serra de Sintra overlooking it all. The centuries old symbiosis of manmade Sintra and the surrounding nature has gained the whole area the status of UNESCO cultural heritage.

    Eintauchen in Iyengar Yoga

"I'm now back for four days from my one-week yoga and paddle surf retreat in Cascais and I'm still relaxed and happy. I had a really great time. Annett is the best teacher I ever had and I guess I have learned - and most of all understood - much more in this week than in the last years. Also worth mentioning are Esther's wonderful massages and the fondly prepared brunches after the morning yoga classes. In summary: a perfect holiday and soon a wonderful memory."

"I went on the November retreat in Morocco, with Annett in 2015, as my first yoga retreat. I can warmly recommend both the place and Annett as a teacher. The hotel is located along the beautiful Atlantic coastline North of Agadir in a remote area- not too touristic but safe. Sun and 28 degrees in November. Great waves for beginners surfing and surf school at the hotel. The yoga practice takes place in a chalet just by the beach (maybe 20 meters from the seashore) with a beautiful view overlooking the ocean.Annett is a very talented, experienced and attentive Iyengar yoga teacher. She is carefully, individually adjusting and guiding the yoga practice so you get the full effect and learn the maximum. After one week with Annett, I now highly prefer Iyengar yoga to any other yoga approach."

"I have just returned from my week in Cascais doing yoga with Annette. It was my first time doing Iyengar yoga and I am a beginner at yoga. Annette was a wonderful teacher, adapting the poses to suit my ability. I have come home refreshed, positive and motivated to continue with my yoga experience. The food by Esther at the house in Cascais was amazing. I already miss the brunches. I also did the paddle boarding which was great fun. A great holiday that I would highly recommend."

"I loved summer yoga and paddle surf retreat in Cascais with Annett! I practice Iyengar yoga for many years and my daughter Tatiana, 13 years old, only started her practice recently. For both of us, the retreat was challenging, interesting, contributing to our practice, because Annett is a very experienced teacher and even in a group she can account for different needs and levels of yoga practice. Paddle surf was great fun too. The accommodation and food were fabulous, although for me the meal times were not ideal. Altogether, a wonderful experience."

Annett is a very skilled and methodological teacher that managed to adapt the classes so it suited everyone including me (Iyengar beginner with back issues) and my wife (dedicated Iyengar yogi). Added to this was great food and accomodation, Esther's hospitality, and the lovely Cascais surroundings. We will be back soon!"

"After my very first yoga class with Annett, some years ago, I felt she was nothing like I had done before through my previous years of Hatha and Astanga yoga. It was like a complete restart. She corrected almost every asana I thought I was doing right! Amongst many things, I learned alignment. She is the best teacher I have ever had and I feel so grateful I crossed her path. I can only say come to Portugal and enjoy Annett's teachings for a unique yoga retreat in a magical place in Europe. "

"It was a spur of the moment decision and probably one of the best choices I have made in a long time. First, the House of Wonders bed and breakfast was just that- a wonderful home filled with great energy, clean, conveniently located and Ester makes an amazing breakfast and offers care and attention to her guests.Second, the Yoga! It's my first Inyengar class and I am hooked! Annette is good! I mean really good! She is precise, patient, attentive, aware and caring. She has found her calling and it shows. Annette knows the body and is able to make the complex simple so I (a beginner) can follow without hurting myself or compromising my body - that is a feat in itself. I wrote this before and I mean it - my yoga will never be the same! The SUP was so fun and challenging - I will now invest in a SUP for my home. The combination of the location, the accommodation, the things to see and do, and the yoga and the SUP, well, like I wrote, it was the best decision I have made in a long time. If your thinking about going, don't think any longer. Book it, I promise you, you will not regret it! Namaste"

"In 2011 I read an article in a New York newspaper about Iyengar yoga being taken seriously by doctors in helping patients with back pain. Having just been diagnosed in hospital with chronic and acute back pain as a result of two almost non-existent discs, I sought a local teacher. Supported by my osteopath I found Annett and my life changed over the last two and a half years. I was desperate for help but didn't really expect yoga to work but in the time I have been doing yoga with Annett I have only had one episode with my back instead of the three monthly meltdowns which had become the norm."
