The idea for Island Yoga was conceived in 2005 when founder David Sharpe heard stories of an enchanted island in southern Thailand. Arriving on Koh Yao Noi, he discovered a pristine island rich in tradition and culture as well as untapped opportunities for adventure. He quickly realized he had found a revitalizing space that would be the perfect location for a transformative yoga experience. Partnering with Ning, a local businesswoman born and bred on Koh Yao Noi, they worked together to help Island Yoga blossom into the established retreat center it is today.
Their vision is to build an evolving community in Thailand empowered to enable change in their lives, community, and environment. Conscious Evolution is the ultimate aim of yoga, and as students here, the mission is for you to discover the wonder of unity in the body, mind, and soul through commitment to a regular yoga practice.
Take yourself on this life-changing journey by combining the core elements of the Island Yoga Method - Hatha yoga, meditation, Tai Chi, pranayama, bhakti, and nutrition—specifically designed to encourage you to take the benefits of your practice into everyday life.
Optional evening activities may include family dinners, guided meditations, sound baths, and spiritual / special interest movie nights. These activities are subject to numbers and interest; some of these may have an additional cost.
Born in the Snowdonia national park of North Wales, David’s twin passions have always been the outdoor adventure and spiritual seeking. In 1987, he created an outdoor-oriented school with an emphasis on experiential learning and personal empowerment. Moving to the US in 1996, he continued to impart his unique brand of insight teachings through yoga and personal growth workshops.

Island Yoga Thailand sits on a tiny, secluded, and blissful island of Koh Yao Noi. Just a 30-minute boat ride from either Phuket or Krabi, Koh Yao Noi is a tranquil, largely untouched island off the regular tourist trail. It is full of hidden gems like world-famous mangroves, breathtaking ocean views, and spectacular limestone towers.
Lose yourself in the natural beauty of the islands with your fellow yogis on adventure excursions. You'll uncover the world-renowned Phang Nga Bay Marine National Park on the island-hopping tour as well as kayaking through mysterious lagoons. It is a deeply restorative and magical place that allows you to let go of the mind chatter that takes up so much space during normal, everyday life.
If you need a boost before your sunrise Tai Chi, there are a selection of fruit, snacks, and warm drinks available at 5:45 a.m. to help awaken your body before you awaken your mind. After your dynamic morning yoga practice, you’ll indulge in a nourishing full vegetarian breakfast buffet to replenish your body after an activity-fueled morning.
Here you will enjoy a variety of traditional Thai dishes as well as some more familiar western plates. They also serve a selection of fresh fruits, Thai coffee, granola, natural yoghurt, sticky rice, and other fresh vegetables.
Ning and her beautiful kitchen team will spoil you with traditional Thai cuisine, offering a wide selection of dishes including plenty of vegetarian options, as well as meat dishes and lots of fresh fish. You will enjoy your vegetarian breakfast buffet here every day, and you can also order a la carte dinner here too.
There are plenty of activities to get involved in around the island during your free time. You can constantly evolve with the specialist workshops on offer at Island Yoga, designed to help you further your practice, or participate in weekly sound healing events that will lead you into heavenly relaxation to receive the deep healing properties of sound. The schedule of activities is updated each week!
Explore all the hidden beauty around the island at your own pace by renting bicycles, kayaks, and scooters that are available at the Nature Lodge. If you need a taxi, do not hesitate to speak to Ning, and she will be able to organize one for you.
Take a 10-minute stroll along the beach and you will reach the local village, Tha Khao, where you can pick up essentials as well as dine at some local food stalls.
For any of your other needs, you can visit the local market, which has 7-11, a pharmacy, a post office, ATMs, a currency exchange, fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as some great places to buy local handmade goods. There are beaches all down the eastern side of the island, which is their side, and amazing sunrises, while the western side has mangroves with good bird-watching spots and stunning sunsets. Koh Yao Noi may be a tiny island, but there is an endless list of places to see throughout your stay here at Island Yoga!
You can see the serenity beyond Koh Yao Noi on an island-hopping trip, exploring the remote islands and limestone karsts in Phang Nga Bay. You will visit three mystical islands, as well as a hidden lime green sea lagoon, where you will get the chance to snorkel and swim directly off the boat. This excursion is run by Island Yoga every Thursday at a cost of 1000 THB.
Venture to Krabi on a private longtail boat from Koh Yao Noi to kayak the tranquil waterways of Ao Tha Lane. You’ll silently glide through the secret utopia’s mangrove forest, limestone karst formations, ocean caves, stalactite formations, and primal lagoons. After 2-3 hours of leisurely kayaking, you’ll head to the remote white sand island of Koh Pak Bia for a delicious picnic.
This is your experience to take at your own pace, and there are so many other great activities on offer in Koh Yao Noi. These include paddle boarding, Thai cooking classes, cycling tours, sailing trips, Muay Thai lessons, diving, snorkelling, and hiking.
