"Isla Verde was absolutely amazing beautiful place, people and food!! Extremely relaxing, where you can do as much as you want or as little as you want. The yoga classes take place in a beautiful studio that over looks the lake. I highly recommend it, and would definitely go back again!"

"We did the personalized yoga retreat at Isla Verde in May 2015 and it was wonderful. We had a private yoga session every morning at 9:30 with Charlie. Charlie was extremely experienced and personable. She custom made our practices based on what she saw we needed and her wealth of experience. It was helpful to be able to email her ahead of our retreat so that she knew about use and our previous practices. We left feeling so good physically, with a bunch of new poses and practices to take home and we carry away her warm positive spirit. I would recommend Charlie and the yoga facilities to any one!The rest of the package, food, accommodations, massage, maya sauna and hot tub, and the grounds at Isla Verde were exactly what we were looking for in a retreat. Clean, beautiful, careful details around the grounds. Quiet, relaxing places to read and enjoy the lake. The meals were healthy and delicious. We ate plenty of food as part of our package and thoroughly enjoyed every meal. The food was fresh from garden and slow cooked with care. Great smoothies and drinks, purified water available all day. I honestly couldn't have asked for a better retreat in all regards than what we got at Isla Verde.I would highly recommend this place and doing a yoga retreat here to anyone! We will definitely be back. It's a stunning location and great value"

"My Thanksgiving week's retreat at Isla Verde with Charlie Broadley in November 2013 was blissful. We practiced a wonderful blend of hatha yoga, pranayama and meditation.Charlie really got to know us all, tailored the classes to incorporate all our foibles and was incredibly attentive to our needs both inside the yoga studio and beyond. I left with a deep sense of peace, relaxation and gratitude to Charlie who was a wonderful person to meet and learn from.Isla Verde was the perfect setting, such a magical place with amazing respect for both nature and the local community. The staffs were all very attentive and helpful. The cafe serves delicious vegetarian food - especially breakfasts.Even the hike to the top cabin felt like a special part of the experience for its amazing views, if you don't mind a bit of a climb - helped I think over the week by the yoga...Isla Verde is an eco-resort and purposefully quite simple/rustic. The rooms were clean and the attention to details - like a watering can in the shower to water the plants - were lovely. (Just don't expect luxury...)"

"Hotel Isla Verde is a little slice of heaven. This quaint, quiet, cozy hotel nestled lakeside in Santa Cruz is a delightful place to stay. I have stayed here several times with my family and friends. As soon as I leave I am always trying to figure out how I can make my next visit. The rooms are comfortable, cozy and clean. Each room offers a beautiful view of the lake. It truly is a majestical setting. The grounds are lushly landscaped with beautiful Central American greenery. There are several places on site where you can cuddle with a book and chill. The fare is delicious! Everything is freshly prepared daily by Mayan young ladies whom you can always hear giggling in the kitchen. Riley, Oli and staff always manage to make you feel like you are at home. During our stays they have gone above and beyond to accommodate us. Additionally, they are very helpful with information of places to see and things to do around the lake. I am anxiously awaiting my next visit to what feels like my home away from home."

"This is a beautiful, funky, relaxed property. The intention is no glitz, just settle and enjoy the vibe of the lake! If you are looking for luxury service, this is not your property. If you are looking for a great, safe, relaxing place to stay than this is your space. The restaurant is DELICIOUS!! We brought 12 yogis with us and everyone had a great time! The stairs up to the rooms were a bit much for our two yogi Grand Dames, but the rest of us enjoyed the challenge of the climb!"

"A random encounter on a chicken bus on our way from Antigua led to us taking a late boat from Panajachel to Santa Cruz La Laguna on the astoundingly beautiful Lake Atitlan (for us, the most stunning location in all Guatemala). We wound our way along the rickety suspended pathway above the lakeside and discovered the amazing IslaVerde at the end.A simply stunning hotel in a stunning location, comprising tranquil hut-like rooms set among beautiful tropical gardens."

" The views over Lago de Atitlan are amazing from all of the rooms."

" Super service from manager Riley, who worked hard to find us a space (we showed up without a booking), gave us a discount for staying just the one night, and a further discount when another guests' dog jumped all over the shower room roof, damaging the plumbing. After that issue, he even fixed it for us to shower in the very top suite, with the best views of all (the views get better the further up you go)."

" The complex is an eco-hotel, so everything is environmentally friendly, from the toilet paper through to the organic menu."

" There's a lovely communal room in front of the reception/beside the restaurant. We spent a full evening in here during a huge thunderstorm. Cosy and warm by the open fire, it was a lovely place to unwind and relax."

"Loved the feel of this place. It is very relaxed and friendly - the room we stayed in had the feel of a cabin. The plants and trees on the property are amazing, and the shared bathrooms with a view of Lake Atitlan and the outdoor sinks for washing up are charming. We booked our room through a booking site and ended up paying $20.00 per night more than IslaVerde's standard rate, so that didn't feel very good but it was our own fault.I would recommend booking directly. The Isla Verde office was hard for us to reach by phone (there is not always someone in the office), but keep trying. Someone else made a comment about how there was no hot water. There was not an endless supply, but we were able to take warm showers, especially if we timed them for afternoon. We were sad that the wood-fired hot tub is only available for an additional $40.00 fee.The deck overlooking the lake and the dining/lounging area have wi-fi. The wi-fi, and even the electricity went out a couple of times, but it was fixed within hours. The set meals were amazing - a little expensive at 100q each, but really, really good. We were a party of three and ordered 2 meals to share the 2nd and 3rd nights after we were unable to eat all of the food the first night when we ordered a meal apiece. Really good recipes.Enjoyed every single thing except the chocolate mousse which probably suffered as a result of the aforementioned lack of electricity. We also ate some breakfasts there - the "gringo waffles" are outstanding. We stayed 4 nights. By the last day we had seen all we wanted to of the surrounding towns, and had relaxed sufficiently at IslaVerde to want to move on. Great memories."

"My wife and I transferred here after a horrendous 2-day nightmare at Villa Sumaya, just "down the road", where we had planned to stay for the whole week (see my review for details). Isla Verde, while not nearly as posh, was like a breath of fresh air. We went from dealing with obnoxiously affected and pretentious people, to the warmest, most genuinely welcoming and helpful people you can imagine. It saved our vacation. All credit to Riley, who obviously sets the tone for the whole place. As many other have commented, this is something of a rustic inn. The grounds have a lush, jungly feel. The rooms/cabins, while clean and cozy, are very basic, with open-air bathrooms, and it's all built into a very steep hill. We had the top most cabin, and we estimated that it was about 15 stories up, if not a little higher. Needless to say, not for the physically unfit. When we left each morning, we made sure to bring everything we needed for the day.On the flip side of this, there's a nice variety of lounging areas down at the lakefront if you want to just hang out, with great views of the volcanoes. The indoor common area by the front desk is a good place to interact with other guests. They always have groovy music playing there at a very civilized volume. There's also a fireplace there that they stoke up on chilly nights. The yoga studio has a big windowed wall facing the lake, with classes available in the morning and afternoon at reasonable prices. There's a lovely little restaurant, with a deck right on the water. We ate dinner there the first night and while the food was delicious, the portions were on the light side, despite being a "3-course meal". We also had breakfast once, and it was equally delicious, and much more filling. Service is slow, as advertised, but hey, it's Guatemala! What's the rush? For more dining options, you can walk 10 minutes along the waterfront "path" to the Santa Cruz dock area. If you're coming back in the dark, make sure you have a flashlight. Getting around the lake is pretty easy from here. We had no problems flagging down boats, or getting them to drop us off at the private dock on the return trip.Wherever you're planning to go, ask at the front desk first what the going rate should be - as the drivers will tend to try to charge you more - and try to state the price before they do. You should definitely make a point of going up to Santa Cruz proper for a taste of the real Guatemala. It's a pretty steep hike, either from the trail that runs through the upper part of Isla Verde, or from Santa Cruz dock. You can also take a tuk-tuk from the dock for Q5/person (about 65 cents). There's a vocational school called CECAP run by a foundation called Amigos de Santa Cruz that's worth trying to arrange a tour of. All in all, Isla Verde is a great, economical home base for a Lake Atitlan vacation. We would stay here again. Thanks again to Riley and the entire staff for making our stay enjoyable and stress free."

"This is the place to stay in Santa Cruz, hands down. The huts are clean and modern and the views from up the hill (where the accommodation is) are stunning. Perfect vistas over Lake Atitlan and the surrounding mountains. The restaurant serves up wholesome, "real" food.Everything is fresh from local farms and is made to order. The lounge/chillout deck is the best spot to hangout in a hammock during the day. The staff here are super friendly and the vibe of this eco-chic hotel is amazing. We spent 2 nights here and it wasn't nearly long enough.Even if you're not planning on spending the night, head over for a beer and spend the afternoon! Highly recommended."

"As you travel around the Lake you will find a dizzying mix of wonderful places that leave you speechless with the flavours of local produce and fantastically made dishes made in all sorts of Eco ways. Hotel Isla Verde and Cafe Isla Verde will leave you, as it has done me, wanting to come back for more. Sitting either in the terraced covered area watching the boats whizz by or up on the huge open deck area in the blazing sun gazing out across at the Volcanos whilst lazing on a beanbag drinking several of their awesomely made cocktails.Eco, hippy, chic and incurably romantic and highly maintained with expert staff who tend to your every need. Getting here is easy as you can either be dropped off at the main Santa Cruz dock and walk for 8 minutes or so. Whether you stay here or just visit for the day it is surely a must see and I will come back again"

"I stayed seven nights @ Isla Verde. The staff was helpful, knowledgeable of the area, kind and respectful. The cabin was lovely and clean with a extraordinary view of the lake. The meals were prepared skillfully, artfully and lovingly using fresh and local ingredients. I cannot say enough good about my stay and the people of Isla Verde who contributed to such a fulfilling experience. During my stay, the staff arranged at my invitation for private daily yoga sessions that were designed to meet my needs by two women who are highly skilled and experienced. I highly recommend Isla Verde. The morning bird song is healing!"

"This place was the most amazing place! It is set up with so much wonderful attention to detail. The rooms were comfortable, with the most spectacular views. Even the bathrooms were great - bringing functionality with the feeling of being outdoors together. There are great nooks set up throughout the property - different hammocks, etc. It is SO relaxing. The food was delicious. The staff was so amazing and helpful - one happened to be traveling on the same boat and bus back to antigua, and helped me find where I needed to go and translate for me, long after we left the hotel. Talk about above and beyond!! And the Yoga class was one of the best I've had - and that's before the amazing view. Also, best views of the lake (and I traveled around the lake to several towns). This place made my whole trip! The only caveat is that there is nothing to really do in Santa Cruz besides hike to neighboring villages (which is the beauty of it), so come here for relaxation - not a party. Also, this place would cost probably 5x in Europe or America - its so luxurious and simple all at the same time. Also be mindful that it is a 10 minute hike/walk from the main Santa Cruz dock, and some of it is along narrow docks (over the water) - so limit your luggage or beg to be brought to the private dock."

"Isla Verde is a gem! We spent two nights here, which wasn't nearly long enough. A 7 minute walk (we timed it!) from the main dock at Santa Cruz will bring you right to the doorstep here. The main area has reception, a large seating area with a wood fireplace for chilly evenings. The wi-fi works the best in this area. The deck leading off of the lower level has great views of the lake and of the nearby volcano - a great spot for enjoying a cup of coffee and a fresh, homemade meal. There's another massive chill-out seating area with a huge deck as well. This is the best spot to enjoy views of the lake while reading a book. It's a steep hike up to the funky wood cabins, but the higher up you are, the better the views :) Even the bathrooms here have nice vistas. This eco-chic hotel is amazing. The owner and the staff are all very friendly and welcoming and the property is incredibly peaceful. Highly recommended."

"A lovely place, with great staff set away from roads and from noise - what more could you want for a few days away from it all? The hotel is beautifully laid out up the side of a steep hill (be warned about that) but every room has a view of the ever changing scene that is Lake Atitlan. There are hammocks and seats and even a swinging boat tucked away in nooks and crannies of their very lush garden to give the illusion that you are totally alone in what could be paradise. All you hear is the birds singing and the occasional passing water bus that provides the means to get there and to get away. There are facilities for yoga, they offer massage... What more do you need? Food. Oh yes, it's the one thing that lets them down a little. In the evening you are a captive audience kind of as the last water bus leaves at 5:30. That's when the a la carte is not available, and the fixed menu kicks in between 6:30 and 8pm. For me, this is not a great meal and at Q100 plus drinks too pricey. We ended up buying food we went exploring the local villages by water taxi and eating away from their restaurant. To be fair the a la carte had some great food on it and we never had a problem with anything we chose off that. We enjoyed it so much that our 5night stay became 6 -and it was a wrench to leave. Thoroughly recommended."

"We came here for one of my last nights in Guatemala and had an excellent stay. The staff was helpful and very friendly. The food was delicious and enjoyed on a patio that sits right above the lake, the most interestingly placed dining room I've sat at in the Atitlan area after more than 15 visits. Their concept of providing local ingredients, cooking from scratch, and purchasing as little pre-packaged food as possible was a welcome change from many places I have eaten in Guatemala. There are numerous creative spaces to hang out and relax spread throughout the property, my favorites being the canoe swing and panoramic yoga room. The fireflies were wonderful to watch as well."

Right on the waterfront it has amazing views from both the restaurant and the sundeck where you can literally spend all day relaxing.I found the staff were always happy to help while I was here, both the international staff who work and manage the place and the locals who were mainly in the kitchen, they were all always smiling and welcoming. Definitely a place to visit if you are on the lake and want to chill out, relax and enjoy good food and a coffee."

"I went to this beautiful place for a yoga and singing retreat plus a couple of extra nights. Ah, sitting in a swing among flowers cascading from the ceiling, basking in the warm sun on the deck, gazing at the stars, enjoying the morning birds, dining overlooking the lake.I stayed in a single cabin high up on the hill (#6 of 8, #8 being the highest) for 10 delightful nights and days. Swam in the lake every day, had a massage, walked the trail to the next town to the west solo with zero safety fears. The managers Oli and Reilly were totally outstanding, happy to accommodate every need, from arranging a boat, a shuttle, and my hotel in Guatemala City to taking care of some food restrictions I have. The entire staff was happy and delightful to be around--you could tell they like working there.I loved their attention to being an ecologically friendly place--solar hot water, organic food, natural vegetation, the cabins of mostly natural materials. It was a climb up and down to my cabin, but I didn't mind due to loving the exercise, the view, and the fact that at 61 I could do it with reasonable grace. (If you're not in good shape you might want to request a lower cabin.)There was some animal life on the roof at night, so I was glad to have my earplugs for sweet sleep.I joined a group of a total of 14 people for our retreat, and the place was perfectly spacious for our group. Yoga on the deck or the painted cement-bamboo sheltered gazebo (huge) in the morning, and singing in the yoga studio in the afternoons and evenings. This was my third trip to Guatemala. I've also traveled in Mexico, Costa Rica, Honduras, and Panama, and this was definitely the most fun and beautiful place I've stayed in all of those countries. Highly recommended! I'd stay here again in a heartbeat."
