You will be staying at Courtyard Rooms at Sagebrush Inn and Suites. Nestled along the courtyard at the center of the property, these cozy rooms offer 288 square feet with either one king or two queen beds, and an abundance of traditional Southwest charm.

Program

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT has roots in humanity's earliest written records. From the Buddha to the Greek made the same connection "it's not what happens to you, but your views and opinions of what happens that creates your emotional anguish."

After experiencing trauma people may adopt a new belief such as "the world is basically hostile and unsafe." And this change may well take place below the level of conscious awareness: consciously you may simply be aware that you feel angry, fearful or hopeless much of the time. The CBT tools drill down to identify the self-defeating beliefs that, when triggered, produce the negative thoughts that are driving these negative feelings.

CBT's behavioral tools help you to establish and maintain new patterns of acting in the world. At the end of the day, it is your new behaviors that consolidate new beliefs by creating the real-world data in support of them.

Kundalini yoga

Kundalini yoga originated in India, the birthplace of all yoga, and is practiced today by people around the world. Western medical science is now studying the ways in which Kundalini yoga promotes both physical and emotional wellness by means of its physical postures, patterned movements, breathing techniques, and meditations. Research is demonstrating how this yoga can reverse the structural and functional changes in the brain and body produced by trauma, thus restoring the body and mind to a state of balance.

During the six hours together each day, you will learn tools that will enable you to:

  • Release distressing memories, flashbacks, feelings of numbness, worthlessness, and despair
  • Leave behind hypervigilance, physical tension, and reactivity to environmental triggers
  • Experience increased peace, joy, security and sound, restorative sleep

Itinerary

  • Day 1: The “hidden wisdom” and deep intelligence of PTSD symptoms.  Appreciating this aspect of symptoms sets the stage for releasing them. You’ll also learn and practice a yoga exercise for resetting parts of the body and brain damaged by trauma.
  • Day 2: Two powerful CBT tools to reshape the self-defeating beliefs that characterize PTSD. You’ll also master a yoga practice that research and that of colleagues has demonstrated supports sound, peaceful, restorative sleep.
  • Day 3: Two additional CBT tools with which to shift PTSD’s negative thought patterns into positive, believable, life-enhancing thinking. You’ll also learn and practice a yoga sequence that releases physical stress, calms the body and restore physical and mental balance.

  • 10:30 - 11:00 Learning and practicing CBT tools
  • 11:00 - 12:00 Kundalini yoga practice (described above)
  • 12:00 - 13:30 Lunch break (on your own)
  • 13:30 - 15:20 Learning and practicing CBT tools
  • 15:20 - 15:30 Break
  • 15:30 - 16:30 Kundalini yoga practice

On Day 2 at 17:00 there is an optional hike on a lovely local trail in the hills with Daniel and Julie.

On Day 3 at 18:00 you may join Daniel and Julie at a local restaurant for dinner.

Throughout each day’s six hours of intensive instruction and practice you’ll have full access to both Dr. Staples and Mr. Mintie. Both will be available to answer your questions, help troubleshoot obstacles to your full recovery, and provide encouragement and support each step of the way.

While many psychotherapists attend the ITRP, the retreats themselves do not provide training in delivering integrative medicine, CBT or Kundalini yoga. There will be other professional venues that therapists may access to receive consultation and training in developing these skills.

This retreats do not provide individual or group psychotherapy, nor are they intended as a substitute for these.

Retreat location

The retreat will be held in Taos, New Mexico, a beautiful mountain community with miles of national forest trails for hiking or biking. Taos Pueblo is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are many art galleries, shops, and wonderful restaurants. There is also a nearby hot spring resort (Ojo Caliente). On the weekend of this retreat, the Taos Mountain Balloon Rally will be held so you may enjoy watching the hot air balloons ascent in the mornings. You are encouraged to arrive early or stay a day or two afterwards to enjoy the area and activities.

How to get there

Recommended Airports

Arrival by airplane

Please book your flight to arrive at to Santa Fe Municipal Airport (SAF) or to Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ).

Arrival by shuttle

There is shuttle service from both airports to Taos but it only runs twice a day. Due to limited public transportation in Taos, you may wish to rent a car.

Group size

The retreat is limited to 20 people to ensure each participant has ample access to the facilitators. Final admission is by private interview.

Cancellations

Payments from cancellations outside the refund period may be applied towards future sessions

Cancellation Policy

  • A reservation requires a deposit of 75% of the total price.
  • The deposit is fully refundable if the booking is cancelled up to 30 days before the arrival date.
  • The rest of the payment should be paid on arrival.
