Ayurvedic medicine is one of the world's oldest holistic healing systems. It was developed more than 3,000 years ago in India and is based on the belief that health and wellness depend on a delicate balance between the mind, body, and spirit. Ayurveda describes a very unique connection that exists between human and the universe.

Ayurveda offers a road map of the universes signposts on the road to perfect balance and harmony. The universe’s signposts are Ether, Air, Fire, Water, and Earth. These five elements are found throughout the bodies, foods, environment, and indeed throughout the entire universe in varying degrees. By beginning to understand these five elements from a new perspective, you can begin to understand the most basic principles taught in Ayurveda.

By observing the universe and your body, you begin to understand how these elements influence your bodies, minds, hearts, and your lives, by knowing which elements are predominant, which ones are causing disharmony, you can begin to follow the universe’s perfect road map to balance.

Everyone is on a very unique journey, you have your own set of unique circumstances that have brought you to where you are. You have your own unique set of genes, history, lifestyle, diet, routines, relationships, and path that have brought you to the place that you are today.

Ayurveda teaches you that each one of you is in a very unique place in the universe, that each one of you are one of a kind manifestations of this universe, and the elements it’s in it.

When you can begin to recognise the unique combination of elements and how they are showing up in your bodies, your minds, your relationships, your yoga practice, your meditation, your practice of pranayama, you can begin to recognise the unique set of signposts that are going to point you to your perfect state of balance.

In order to begin to embark on this journey that is Ayurveda, you need to understand a little bit about how to determine your own unique place in the universe.

CONS Cons: The rooms, the food wich was to little and overpriced and also not very healthy even If it was vegetarian, the fact we couldnt choose our own starters and had to eat what the yogateachers husband orderd every day. The last days we didnt even have starters. The singing balls which was a Joke practically. To little food for breakfast not even juice. The fact that the husband of the yogateacher was around when eating and had bigger portions than the rest of the group even If he wasnt a part of the group really. The price of waterbottles in the studio we where offered to buy at 40000 rhp. In shop they are around 2-4000!! No water water in room either.

PROS Pros: The location, the yogastudio, the views and some of the yogasessions and the fact that the yogateacher was kindhearted, the trip to the wateroalace was ok but the lunch should ofcourse been included concerning the price of the retreat.

Organizer response: I'm truly saddened and confused to read this. I wish you had addressed your concerns during the week, they would have been so easily rectified. I will clarify the main points so future guests will be under no confusion about what we offer. With over 30 dishes to choose from and a fantastic selection of Indonesian and Western food it is some of the best food we've tasted in Indonesia and we have been here 4yrs! You choose your own starters and mains, these are included in the retreat package so I don't understand why you say they were overpriced as you didn't have to pay for any! Portion sizes are the same for everybody. Juice is available alongside breakfast. Water, hot and cold, and a selection of teas are available free of charge all week. We have never, and will never, charge for water. The water is kept in the Shala which you have access to 24/7. We sell empty, reusable, BPA free, water bottles to try to keep our plastic consumption down. We make no profit from them and you are under no obligation to buy them. We do also provide cups. This is all explained in the welcome talk. Such a shame you left feeling disappointed as this wasn't the impression you gave throughout the week and certainly wasn't what we hoped for. Best wishes for the future, Sarah and Larry.

Organizer response: Thank you very much for your review, we are so glad to hear that you enjoyed your week with us! I am humbled that I have inspired you to continue your yoga practice and look forward to when our paths cross again! Sarah & Larry

    Very creative and rich programme

CONS Cons: The programme was a little too packed with activities, and I felt I did not have enough time and space for myself. Also, I did not like the room and the food so much. The sea in front of the hotel was dirty, so I swam only once.

PROS Pros: The programme was full with all kinds of yoga, talks about chakras, ayurveda, and much else, and sightseeing in the area, especially the tour to water palaces exceeded my expectations. I also had a private reiki training. The view from the hotel and yoga shala was amazing.

Organizer response: Thank you very much for taking the time to write a review & indeed for joining us on our retreat. We are very happy that your overall experience was a positive one. There was a storm that washed in debris from the ocean, it is not a usual occurrence and we are happy it didn't affect the swimming pool or your snorkel trip. Feedback from our guests is always appreciated & acted upon so we can improve our quality & service for future retreats. Sarah and Larry.

    "Great Yoga Retreat"

"Sarah is a phenomenal yoga teacher and just a beautiful person inside and out. "

"The theme "How are you Really" was spot on. Sarah and Larry made sure that you had time for introspection pondering that question."

"The retreat schedule was great. We learned a lot about yoga, chakra's, auyervdic practices, yin yoga and yoga nidra. The excursions to the water palace and mountain Shaman were interesting and informative about the local Balinese culture. "

"The class participants were literally from around the globe. We bonded and shared a lot of laughs and even a few tears as we learned about ourselves and each other."

"The 'How are you really?' Yoga retreat was one of the best holidays I've ever had. It was the perfect combination of yoga, meditation, sightseeing and relaxation. The hotel was great, with wonderful food and a great location, along with an onsite Shala with panoramic sea views to die for; perfect for yoga practice. The excursions were lovely too, especially the water palace."

"Sarah was a great instructor who pushed your boundaries but never pushed you over the edge. As a result, I felt my practice really improved and it has encouraged me to find a better instructor at home. The retreat also introduced me to meditation and pranayama, something which is hard to find in yoga classes in my area. However, I do try and practice them at home."

"Most importantly, I felt that I came away from the retreat a better person with more appreciation for the good things in life, and that is thanks to Sarah (and Larry too!) I hope to see them again on another retreat in the future."

"Thank you Sarah and Larry for this experience, you made me feel so welcome, I didn't have a moment of self consciousness when it came to me just being me for a week, Sarah you knew I had never done yoga before and you just let me do my own thing, but you watched and guided me, it has been a gift, thank you."

"The retreat has been excellent. Sarah is an amazing yoga teacher and a really enjoyed following her classes. Classes are accessible to all levels because Sarah always give many options from the easiest to the most difficult, which is great. The place was also amazing and perfect to relax with pool and seafront view. Discussions were interesting and day trips as well. The retreat has really great value considering all the activities included and the quality of the classes. Sarah and Larry are very kind and friendly and so was the atmosphere. Highly recommended!"

  • Review by Gilly from United Kingdom

"I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Sarah on a yoga retreat on Gili Air in late 2013. I was at a stage in my life when I knew I could be a better version of myself but not really having any idea how to unlock this person. I was stressed, lacking in confidence with no clear direction. Sarah is a beautiful person, inside and out and has such an amazing outlook on life it's easy to be guided by her. I had meltdowns, tears and moments of complete clarity during the week and Sarah was there every step of the way to offer a words of wisdom and guidance. She is calm, motivated, knowledgeable, spiritual, flexible (in all ways!) and above all wants to bring out the best in you. Let Sarah guide you along the path and allow you to become that better version of you, you won't regret it, I guarantee it."

  • Review by Carly Hinds from WA

"I have always been absolutely thrilled with my yoga classes with the lovely Sarah Thane-McKenzie. From my first class, she has always been so friendly, warm & welcoming in her own down to earth & humble way & Sarah always made the classes interesting, informative & fun. Every class has been unique & Ive always learned & experienced something new each class. She is especially attentive to newcomers & took the time to guide us into the postures correctly (postures that I had been unknowingly doing wrong for years!). I especially love her meditation sessions at the end of each class. "

"Thank you Sarah for always delivering your classes in an enthusiastic & diverse way that keeps me coming back for more!!"
