Enjoy this amazing winter retreat and embrace a full yoga practice, starting early each morning, including meditation, as well as posture work and pranayama breathing practices. High Heathercombe is a purpose-built center that can accommodate groups of up to 26 people in six dormitory bedrooms. There is a large, comfortable sitting room with dining room area with an open fireplace. Adjacent to the main room is a well-equipped kitchen, where all meals are freshly prepared on site.

Separate from the main building is the forest room, which is a large, versatile recreational and workshop space, with an efficient wood-burning stove. The center has a shower room with four cubicles, a washroom, and two toilets. The building is centrally heated.

This retreat will take place in Dartmoor, Devon, United Kingdom. The High Heathercombe Centre is situated within the boundary of the southern half of Dartmoor National Park. The nearby section of the A38 Expressway skirts the south moor, running from Exeter to Plymouth, and provides easy access to the area as a whole.

Driving directions from Ashburton

  • From the center of Ashburton, turn into North Street (spar on corner, coop opposite).
  • Follow the road round left bend over the bridge (signposted Widecombe).
  • Follow the road up for two miles.
  • As the road flattens, turn right where the road broadens and there are white stripes in the middle, (name on signpost post Auswell) signposted Widecombe and Haytor.
  • After two meters, turn left onto B3387 (signpost name Hemsworthy Gate) signposted Widecombe.
  • After a few hundred meters, turn right at signpost name Harefoot, after a while you will pass Hounds Tor.
  • After three meters, turn left at the crossroad signposted Heathercombe (signpost name Heatree).
  • Go round S-bend, past Heatree Activity Center.
  • After a few hundred meters, go straight on where road bends to left, signposted Heathercombe.
  • Follow narrow lane down, through a couple of houses, keep going up.
  • At the top, follow the car park sign, park, and walk down to the center.

Driving directions from Bovey Tracey

  • If having come from Exeter via the A38 or from Newton Abbot, follow signs to Widecombe, Haytor, and Manaton.
  • About a quarter mile after the roundabout, at Bovey fire station, follow the road to the right in the direction sign-posted Manaton (and Becky Falls) only.
  • After about four-and-a-half miles, you will reach the Kestor Inn in Manaton village.
  • Continue a further two miles on the same road until you meet Heatree Crossroads.
  • Go straight across in the direction signposted Heathercombe and Natsworthy and you will soon see the Heatree Activity Centre on your left.
  • At the top of the hill, go straight ahead following Heathercombe signs.
  • Continue down into Heathercombe, between two houses, and continue up the steep hill beyond.
  • The short driveway to High Heathercombe is on your right, near the top of the hill.

Driving directions via Callington, Gunnislake, and Tavistock

  • Just on edge of Tavistock, turn right onto the moor towards Princetown (B3357).
  • Follow signs for Two Bridges (B3357) and at Two Bridges, turn left for Moretonhampstead (B3212).
  • Keep going through Postbridge and Warren House.
  • Turn right signposted to Manaton for a couple of miles then turn right at Heatree crossroads (signposted Heathercombe).
  • Go round S-bend, past Heatree Activity Center.
  • After a few hundred meters, go straight on where the road bends to the left, signposted Heathercombe.
  • Follow the narrow lane down through a couple of houses, keep going up.
  • At the top, follow the car park sign, park, and walk down to the center.

Driving directions from Moretonhampstead

  • Follow the B3212 to Postbridge and Princetown.
  • After about three miles, having passed Bovey Castle and Miniature Pony Center, turn left at Watching Place Cross, sign-posted Manaton.
  • Follow the road for about two-an-a-half miles, bringing you to Heatree Cross.
  • Turn right at Heatree Cross, sign-posted for Heathercombe and Natsworthy, and you will soon see the Heatree Activity Center on your left.
  • At the top of the hill, go straight ahead following Heathercombe signs.
  • Continue down into Heathercombe, between two houses, and continue up the steep hill beyond.
  • The short driveway to High Heathercombe is on your right, near the top of the hill.

Important information

Please beware of the poor road surface in places when approaching the Heathercombe Estate, as well as the very steep incline and sharp corner on the last hill up to the center.

    Virginia Compton teaches yoga classes and workshops, leads retreats, and offers massage therapy at various lovely venues in Devon, sharing her passion for the holistic yoga lifestyle. In her own practice, she incorporates the yoga teachings, as well as Ayurveda, using a physical Hatha yoga practice, breathing (pranayama), and meditation, as well as massage therapies and healthy vegetarian cookery to enhance the whole life experience.
