Joan Stonehouse holds qualifications in Iyengar yoga and is also certified by the British Wheel of Yoga. Her teaching concentrates on correct alignment, hence maximum benefit and safety in the poses. Classes will be always planned to suit the needs and aptitudes of the group with regard to the postures chosen and the overall physical demands involved in a session. Depending upon the circumstances therefore, a session may be gentle and involve mainly basic postures or could be more demanding with the inclusion of more advanced postures where appropriate. In any event, her approach is such that whatever the posture every student will be able to make a start and so gain some benefit from it.
Overall students will be encouraged to regard their yoga practice as a mindful exploration of body and mind designed to increase strength and flexibility in equal measure which combined with meditation and visualization sessions in the evenings will do much to reduce anxiety and stress and promote a vibrant feeling of wellbeing.
Over its history, Madeira has been visited by merchants, explorers and had brief periods of occupation including British troops, which has resulted in a diverse population from North Africa and blonde, blue-eyed Europeans. Christopher Columbus married the first Governor’s grand-daughter in the 15th century when the Portuguese settlers arrived on the island. The island has a wealthy history of sugar cane plantations and has bred many romantic stories of pirates. Sugar cane is no longer the main crop; this has been replaced with vines that produce the famous Madeira wine. The amazing beauty of the island rising from the ocean with steep cliffs and high mountains was once believed to be the lost civilization of Atlantis.
On the final evening you can enjoy a special dinner in the hotel’s Atlantis restaurant, which is dramatically set into the foot of the rocky cliffs at sea level, a wonderful finale to this unique holiday.
