The retreat was exactly what I was looking for. I stayed in one of the yurts which although rustic, had everything that I needed. Was close walking distance to the main part of the resort and allotted me ample privacy. I was lucky enough to be staying during the shoulder season so noise issues did not exist as others had commented on when staying in the yurts. The main residence has a lovely courtyard as well as a beautiful view of the ocean. The food was superb and the yoga instruction was absolutely exceptional. Maya is one of the most talented instructors that I have had the privilege of working with. She is very in tune to each individuals abilities and excellent at guiding people into the correct postures. All of the staff were very easy and pleasant to deal with and I am very excited to plan my next retreat there this time next year!

The nature will enchant you with aroma of blooming trees, beauty of exotic plants and purity of the island air. It's a wonderful place to escape busy civilization and to enjoy the organic environment. Thank you for a wonderful time!
I came here just after Christmas and did the five day return to self-retreat. The place is just amazing! The room was so comfortable and the bathtub was huge. My favorite activity was sitting in the hot tub at night and watching the stars. Spectacular! I had daily yoga and meditation and wonderful spa treatments. The food was outstanding if you like healthy organic farm to table eating, which I love! The staff were so friendly and accommodating. I stayed for five days, but felt like I had relaxed for five weeks when I left. The place is not a fancy high energy regular type Hawaii resort, it's totally the opposite. When I go to Hawaii I go to unwind, relax and decompress. This place is the perfect spot for that! in fact I am returning this year and know that my five days will be another amazing experience! Thank you Hawaii Island retreat for everything you do to make your guests feel pampered and relaxed.

Oh what a wonderful trip! The grounds are truly spectacular and the sound of waves on the rocks below follows you throughout the property. We saw whales nearly every morning before a delicious, fresh breakfast of food grown on the property. The massages and yoga were fantastic. I am a yoga instructor and appreciated Maya's sequences, knowledge and caring instruction throughout the trip.We brought wine with us, which the resort kept in their kitchen fridge. If you don't eat on property one evening, I highly recommend Sushi Rock just minutes away! There are so many fantastic activities within a short drive. We went horseback riding, hiked to Black Sand beaches, took a helicopter ride and shopped, all within an hour of the resort. The managers and property owner, Jeanne, are wonderful and so friendly. If you are here for a party or always need a cocktail in hand to have a vacation, this is not the resort for you. If you are looking for total peace and quiet in a beautiful setting, this is your place!

My daughter and I just returned from a six day mother/daughter yoga retreat at this incredibly special property. From our original booking to saying "Aloha" at the end of our stay, everyone was welcoming, professional and accommodating. Our room was spacious with a beautiful bath, quality linens and maid service on request. The doors opened to the ocean and we were lulled to sleep by ocean breezes and the waves crashing on the rocks below. (One note: there is not a swim beach here. The ocean view from the cliff above is extraordinary and many mornings we were greeted by whale sightings just offshore. For swimming, the pool is great! All the special services (massage, yoga, etc.) were exceptional.Chefs Mo and Lindsay prepared tasty, healthy meals from food grown right on the property and were totally open to any personal requests. While they do not currently serve liquor, they were happy to keep our beer and wine in their refrigerator. If you choose not to eat at HIR, there are several local restaurants which are nearby that we found to be fun and delicious. Both nearby towns of Kapaau and Hawi were charming...think Hawaii as you'd picture it in 1960! We enjoyed hiking, horseback riding, beach going and exploring the surrounding areas. All activities were easy driving distances away - perfect little 1/2 day trips.Come here if you're looking for: organic food, personalized services, tranquility, private oceanfront setting and peaceful surroundings.Don't come here if you're looking for: a swim up bar serving Mai Tais, nightlife, a six page menu and non-stop planned activities. The word RETREAT best describes this place - it is not a RESORT.Jeannie, the owner, gave us a personal walk-about tour during our stay. She and her staff are totally dedicated to creating a little piece of "heaven on earth" which gratefully they are willing to share with all of us. HIR is now definitely on our list of favorite places and we plan on a return visit as soon as possible!

Hawaii Island Retreat is a gem of a discovery. The large gracious villa with a spacious entrance, inner courtyard with blooming Ylang Ylang trees, lovely, quiet rooms, and tall trees leading to a stunning ocean overlook all fill the senses and quiet the spirit. I found myself breathing more deeply here than I had in a long time.A path on this many-acre retreat leads to an ancient sacred stone circle, a natural hula platform, and plenty of space for any ceremony or ritual you might desire, whether alone or with a group. You can take the path all the way down to the rocky shore, or just stay above, delighting in the energy of the entire grounds, from the organic gardens to sweeping ocean views to the luxurious pool. Then, add the gracious and enlightened owner, Jean Sunderland, whose calm and intelligent presence speaks volumes about this sanctuary, her wonderful staff, beautifully-prepared organic meals, and spa services, and you really have a heaven on earth. Mahalo and Aloha for such a fine retreat honoring the natural world and the human soul.

We just returned from an amazing spa retreat and felt compelled to write about our experience. We are a couple from California and we are so happy to have fond this oasis. After looking online at the website and reading about the private aspects of this retreat (there are only 17 rooms on 50 acres!), we decided to spend a week there. We expected luxury and a peaceful oasis, our expectations were met then exceeded daily. The staff treated us like longtime friends, we were called before we arrived and were able to help personalize our retreat schedule. The therapists are absolute healers. I teach yoga for a living and I was very impressed with the level of knowledge the yoga instructor possessed. Finally, but never last, the food was fresh and delicious. There is no better word to describe Chef Kealii and Mo. These two creative men embody the meaning of the word "Chef". We will return for the food, the peaceful Island land and the healing energy.

I just came back from an amazing yoga retreat at Hawaiian Island Retreat lead by Christy Brown Yoga and it was amazing. The property feels like a grand home with a beautiful view, lovely grounds with ancient sacred stones, large suites, great pool, and wonderful yoga space. The location is off the grid with power generated from onsite solar and wind installations and they serve delicious farm to table food from their organic farm. The place is removed from, but at the same time close to the quaint town of Hawi. And if that wasn't enough, all the staff members are just sweethearts who want to help you to stay relaxed and feel special, but are not intrusive in any way. If you have time, get bodywork from Jeannie, the owner. She is a really special woman with the gift of healing in her hands and heart. She is an incredible steward of the land and truly embodies the aloha spirit.

Spent a lovely six days in a yoga retreat here. Beautiful yoga space, sacred land, great staff and gifted healer/owner. Mahalo! See you next year. Spa was great too!Food got better each day. Food from the land included!
Hawaii Island Retreat is a very well designed, small boutique hotel that is set near a bluff overlooking the ocean, at the end of a graded gravel road. The rooms are spacious, well appointed, and the setting is tranquil and fragrant. The owners and staff are gracious and helpful, and the entire atmosphere is very quiet and serene. If you're planning to stay in the Hawi or Kapa'au area, this is an excellent choice. Note that you'll probably need to go off property for lunch and dinner, unless you inform the front desk at least 24 hours in advance that you'd like to eat on site and there aren't that many dining options in the area.

My compliments to the chef! The location is incredible. The spa service is wonderful. The yoga trainer is top notch. The view is unparalleled and the food is wonderful and one of the main attractions. We stayed in the penthouse and were spoiled by all the personal service. Also, the infinity pool and hot tub are a great addition.

This was the most magical and spiritual place for my god-child's wedding. We were welcomed by the owners, Jeanne and Robert, with Aloha right from the start. Our room's decoration was the perfectly blended of warmth and class with a spectacular view of the wild Kohala coast. As we all gathered from different ends of the globe, we immediately felt at home. The attention to details on the grounds and spectacular plantings was obvious at every turn with beautiful and surprising little areas with much to explore and find a peaceful connect. The staff was amazing, helpful, and available always. I can't say enough about the food, organic greens. and sumptuous meals created by chef Mo never disappointed me. I came away with a joy for the union as well as a feeling of inner peace with my spirit soothed. Don't miss this experience; you will know what Aloha truly means.

I stayed at the retreat for a spiritual workshop and I have to say that it is the perfect venue for that. The grounds are beautiful and completely green. This is a special place and the grounds have lots of history and energy. The organic meals were fantastic and even better that the fruits and veggies were mostly grown on the property. You can lose yourself hiking around the vastness of the grounds. This is not the place for partying and drinking but to sitting at the beach. In fact, you can't swim at the beach here, but you can in the salt water pool. If you want the party scene, you are better off somewhere else.
Our wedding guests and family visits were truly amazing. The rooms are as comfortable as it is the entire retreat. We felt the true aloha experience. Whether walking the grounds, swimming in the pool, or just sitting around talking with family, the peaceful environment made our trip truly memorable.

This environmentally-conscious resort is very special indeed. We chose to stay in one of the yurts, but I looked at the rooms in the main lodge, and they were wonderful too. The yurt was more luxurious than the name implies, and it allowed us to use all the resort's facilities without the cost of the regular room. This is a big advantage when budgets are a consideration! The pool area was peaceful and lovely to use. The gardens and plantings were very artful. There are 3 large rooms that can be used for yoga or other group gatheringsthere were no groups there when we were so we had the entire place almost to ourselves. It was so quiet, peaceful, and green in the best ways. The owners have created a work of art, everywhere you look. We only live about 50 miles from this resort and plan to return several times a year.

To my friends at Hawaii Island Retreat, thank you so much for everything. What a perfect place to relax! I loved the ocean view, the vegetable and herb gardens, and the salt-water pool. But I especially enjoyed the massage therapy. I had been under significant stress for many years, and did not realize that a person trained in art of healing, as Jeanne is, can make such a difference! I encourage everyone to visit this beautiful resort, and experience it for yourself. There's truly nothing like it!

If you're looking to be reinvigorated or to find serenity and focus, or to simply reconnect with yourself or others, this is the perfect place. It's quiet and beautifully kept, hidden away from the noise and distractions of city life. The yurts were lovely to stay in and I can't say enough about the serenity pool. The staff were kind and efficient, and very mindful about everything they did. I'll be returning one day, that's for sure.

The Hawaii Island Retreat showcases the superb taste, loving care, talent, and stewardship of the environment of its owners. The landscaping and the retreat's site by the ocean are gorgeous and relaxing. We stayed in a yurt for four days, and then decided to stay longer, moving to one of the rooms for another two days. Two different experiences, both of which we enjoyed. Loved the delicious breakfasts, the infinity pool, the hiking paths, the small number of rooms, and the sense of spaciousness and peace. Highly recommended both for those who already care about the environment, and for those who are open-minded and want to learn more.
