The different types of accommodation at Hariharalaya are all built using natural materials in a traditional way. All of our spaces are clean, comfortable, and cool and come equipped with mosquito nets, bedding, towels, and fans.

We have a total of four dorms, seven private rooms, and seven bamboo retreat huts spread out through six acres of land and forest. There are seven shared modern bathrooms with flushing toilets and six showers. All of our land is connected by beautifully landscaped paths and gardens, which are well lit at night.

Joel (Founder)

Dancer, Yogi, Linguist, Chef, Poet, Jeweler, Mystic Classical Musician and Lover of Life. Joel drowned himself in the ocean of Yoga and never came back. He was first initiated in a traditional Kriya yoga path in 2000, which sparked a period of 10 years of intensive Sadhana, Self inquiry and Self discovery. Joel met his gurus, Sri Karunamayi, Sri Shivabalayogi and Sri Amritanandamayi Ma around 2005 and spent years studying Integral Yoga and absorbing the wisdom of Being from the presence of many great saints, sages and enlightened masters. Since 2010 Joel has dedicated his time and energy to maintaining a sacred space to explore and experience this great Joy and Freedom of Awakening through Integral Yoga, conscious living, community and creativity.

Joel advocates simple and healthy living, coming back into harmony with the natural cycles of Life, and integrating the Body, Heart and Mind as a conscious wholeness. He has great respect for traditional culture and integrated living, which is one of the reasons that he set up his center for Integral Yoga and Awakening in Siem Reap, Cambodia near the ancient temples of Angkor.

Joel is present and teaching during almost all of the retreats and is available for questions. One book of dharma talks, The Foundations of Stillness, was published in 2013. There are currently two more books of talks from early 2014, Seeds of Dharma, which will be released later this year.

Sam

Sam is the Head Yoga Teacher at Hariharalaya. From the age of seven he trained in traditional martial arts, but since discovering Yoga at university he has never looked back. With a background in Functional Therapy and qualifications in Massage Therapy, he brings a strong anatomical focus to the practice of Yoga and has spent time in Morocco, India, Greece and Laos to deepen his understanding of Yoga and the human body. Further study and practice led Sam to the realisation that Yoga goes far beyond the physical body, but at the same time that our body is the ‘gateway’to our mind and soul, the instrument with which we work to achieve our higher purpose. As a result, Sam has become more invested in meditation, breathwork and other, more subtle aspects of Yoga. Most importantly, he has realized that there is a form of Yoga to suit everyone, no matter their path or their physical, mental, or spiritual condition.

Sam’s mission at Hariharalaya is to make Yoga a beautiful, joyous and accessible experience for every single person who comes to stay here. There is nothing more inspiring than seeing people leave the center full of enthusiasm and love for this practice and he is excited to share this experience with so many people over the coming months.

Ryan (Retreat Manager)

Ryan is a scribbling nomad. He has traveled the world by many means. Yachts. Tuk-tuks. RV’s. Motorcycles. Kayak and foot. His path an expression of seasonal ambling. Though his geographic coordinates have been in a steady flux his destination has remained constant; The Present Moment. As a long-time practitioner of mindfulness and conscious living he has immersed himself in the culture of self-exploration. His passion for deeper understandings has guided his travels both inward and out. He has carried a personal practice of yoga and meditation with him for the last 20 years and considers that to be just the beginning of a lifetime of learning. He passionately advocates global sustainability and works to leave the world in a better place than he found it.

In 2015 he completed a 200 hour teacher training with Absolute Yoga Academy in Koh Samui, Thailand. That experience spilled into a year of mindfulness courses, yoga festivals, travel writing, and conscious pursuits. In the spring of 2016 he embraced the manager’s position at Hariharalaya and enjoys the love and inspiration afforded to him by the retreat center’s community.

Our Yoga Village is located on over 2 acres of jungle gardens in the shade of the Ancient Temples of Angkor in a traditional Cambodian village, just 15 kilometers from Siem Reap and the International Airport. Hariharalaya was the capital of Vedic Cambodia from 800 AD until around 1000 AD. The name comes from Sanskrit, Hari Vishnu, Hara Shiva and Alaya Home. It means the Home of the Divine Unity within Duality.

Part of the magic of Hariharalaya is the opportunity to live in a traditional Cambodian farming village. Located 16 kilometers from Siem Reap, the villagers of Bakong still live a traditional lifestyle - farming with cows, living simply, walking and riding bicycles to the market. The childrens smiles and laughter fill the dirt paths and roads, as they play far from the stress and tension of the city and tourists.

Food is the cycle of life - this life that has been moving, creating, and dancing for vast periods of time and timelessness. Food is our way of participating in this great event, with respect, love, joy, and creativity. We honor the life that sustains us - eating local, seasonal, simple, vegan, organic, colorful, and delicious food. Meals are also a time for our community to gather and share in a moment of awareness. Before each meal, we all come together in a circle and our founder, Joel, reads a poem by Hafiz (16th century Sufi mystic poet), followed by a group OM and then announcements.

Our breakfasts always include fresh fruit - like mango, pineapple, watermelon, banana; a main course - ranging from scrambled tofu, garlic mashed sweet potato, Khmer rice porridge, vegan waffle bar, and more; and also a smoothie of the day - mango carrot, passion fruit banana, peanut butter banana, watermelon juice, etc.

Our lunches and dinner consist of a main course, brown rice and a fresh salad. Meals range from Khmer curries, rice noodle pastas, Mexican beans, hummus, Indian Dahl and curries, pumpkin soup, and much more. During our Saturday meditation intensives. we eat simple meals - rice gruel and steamed veggies - in order to keep the body-mind calm and peaceful.

We also offer a wide selection of local Cambodian snacks and homemade treats in between mealtimes. Snacks include bags of peanuts, raisins, trail mix, banana chips, and sweet potato chips. Freshly baked homemade cakes and sweet breads, and locally made vegan coconut ice cream.

We must also remember that we are not only nourished by the food we put in our body, but also by the subtle currents of nature and life - the elements, the sun and moon, our breath, our creativity and joy.

The good news is that you can continue to eating with consciousness once you leave Hariharalaya! Now available is the second edition of our own cookbook - Hariharalaya. Cooking with Consciousness. With over 90 of our favorite recipes including high quality color photos, it is the perfect addition to your home kitchen!

Most of our morning and evening classes are held in our open air 120 m tiled yoga hall. Made of wood and thatched roofing and complete with a sound system, lighting and cinema, it is a magical space to learn and be inspired. The golden altar is the central focus and pays tribute to the religions and teachers of the world.

Animals

You are sure to encounter many other creatures in our Hariharalaya community - from cows to geese, fish to lizards, spiders to ducks, and more. Embrace the wholeness of life and spend some time with our animal family.

Hidden Temple Yoga Journey

Off the maps and away from tourists, explore the former King’s temple that stood hundreds of years before Angkor Wat. Once the site of battles between the Vietnamese and Khmer Rouge, this sacred place is now covered by thick forest and shrouded with mystery and serenity. We will be picked up by tuk-tuk at 10 a.m. for the excursion. The journey begins with a yoga & meditation practice by the lotus pond surrounded by the sounds of nature. Then we will share a delicious lunch picnic under the shade of ancient trees. Afterwards, there is time to explore the ruins and the local pagoda. "Hariharalaya is a very special place. The staff here are well trained and intuitive. A very loving community. The pictures don't lie, it is really that beautiful. The setting is picturesque. But most importantly, the experience that they offer at Hariharalaya is one driven by a true desire to make a difference in people's lives, and the world. Don't think about it, just go!"

"My time at Hariharalaya went far beyond expectations. Initially I had booked my time there hoping to learn some tips to incorporate yoga and meditation into my day to day life. I did get that and so much more. Joel is a fantastic human. His love for his craft is contagious and I found myself learning to dive in to the Om lifestyle. Joel is insightful and approachable, happy to answer questions about life, music or just chat about whatever's on your mind (or his). The FOOD!! Oh man, I'm a card carrying omnivore but the vegan food was spectacular. Three delicious square meals a day. Also made myself a regular at the Juice Bar and I recommend you do too. Thank you for a memorable experience."

"My husband and I needed somewhat of a system reset as we'd just sold our house and everything in it to travel the world and just see what life could throw our way. It was a bit stressful! Hariharalaya was perfect. It was recommended by a friend and we are so happy we took that recommendation. The retreat is tucked away among beautiful green and lush scenery. Very quiet and peaceful. The accommodation is very simple but you don't need much. I had done yoga before but my husband hadn't (bless him he threw himself wholeheartedly in to the experience!). Your level of experience doesn't matter though. It's not about what your body can do, the Center is more about giving you the basic tools and understanding that this lovely practice can be taken with you anywhere. The instructors were helpful and really lovely and all had great energy. There was a good structure to the day but loads of free time. Reading in hammocks was a popular favorite! The vegan food was outstanding. We aren't vegan or vegetarian but it didn't matter because the food was so delightful. It just felt as if it was doing you good! I would highly recommend this to anyone who wants to reconnect with themselves, get the basics of yoga and meditation and just have an outstanding and memorable experience. Thank you team Hariharalaya, you were amazing."

"I think it's hard to really convey how amazing this place is. Everything was perfect. The location is so beautiful and removed from the hustle of Siem Reap. It was wonderful to get back to nature, whilst at the same time the facilities are very clean and well kept. The staff are all warm and friendly and go out of their way to ensure everyone is having an amazing time. The food is sensational! You can eat as much as you possibly can and it’s all nourishing. The yoga and the meditation teachings I will take with me into my life and have already changed how I practice. A million thank yous to everyone. I can't recommend this place enough- so many great activities, massages, special guests, talks, fun and soul searching. I'll be back!"

"Hariharalaya was an amazing experience. There was the perfect balance of being able to get your own head space, but you also have the chance to meet amazing people. The yoga was taught well, and the food was delicious. The ecstatic dance session was a highlight for me, reminding me to throw yourself into things and not let self-consciousness or pessimism rule. I’d recommend for anyone needing to take a well-earned break. Thanks guys!"

"As someone who hadn't been on a retreat before/was not regularly practicing yoga, I wasn't sure what to expect from my 6 days at Hariharalaya. I was so blown away by the whole experience though! The leaders/instructors were all so knowledgeable, kind and inclusive as well as just interesting humans in their own right. The grounds are lovely, food was actually really great every meal and the whole flow of the program is perfectly designed to bring peace and openness into the group. Two things I ended up loving and highly recommend: ecstatic dance and partner/acro yoga. The beauty of your time here though, is that you can make what you want of it (time to yourself, time hanging with others, optional activities, etc) - so no two weeks are exactly the same. If you go, do exactly what you want/need to do but also don't be afraid to try some new things! Overall - loved my time at Hariharalaya and would love to come back some day "

"I was making a big change in my life, moving from New Zealand to England, when I decided I needed to pause and process what was happening. Hariharalaya was the best possible place to do this - it exceeded all expectations. Its peace and tranquility gave me time to rest and relax. The earthy, lusciously green grounds, a sanctuary to walk amongst. Authentic bamboo huts offered a secluded paradise to retreat to, hammocks a plenty everywhere you look, a delightful pool to dip into in the midday heat and an abundance of other rooms, nooks and crannies to find a quiet space to read, draw, meditate, practice yoga or just generally be. The teachers were inspirational, each on their own journey but also more than happy to be open and share with you, they were always there to listen or provide guidance if you asked for it. Finally, the people, other yogi's and yogini's, who came together for 6 days, from all over the world and became one community. An incredible sense of unity and bonding and experiences with them that I will never forget (yes I am talking about ecstatic dance night!) I could go on forever, so tips and highlights: * do nothing or everything, it is extremely flexible so the choice is yours * if you're a foodie, you are in for a treat * appreciate the natural surroundings - bullfrogs, gecko, spiders and all. Weird and wonderful noises echo through the night * go with an open heart and truly live in 'the now' * join in ecstatic dance night!!! Extremely liberating!"

"A beautiful place in a beautiful country, Hariharalaya was an incredible retreat and unlike any holiday I had been on before. A break from the modern world sounded daunting, but I embraced the tech free replacing it with tranquility. Swapping fast food for Cambodian vegan cuisine. Spending time in a beautiful location, doing yoga with amazing teachers and coming home feeling like a different person. I would recommend it to anyone."

"I knew from all the great reviews that I'm going to beautiful place, where I'll meet beautiful people, but I wasn't prepared for how beautiful this experience is really going to be. The ambient in the retreat is amazing, everything natural. The food so delicious. I'm not vegan, I'm not even vegetarian but the menus are so different and delicious that I enjoyed every meal. And all the natural fruit shakes. I loved yoga classes and meditation, but when it was to much of everything (sometimes yoga 3 times per day) I just skipped one and enjoyed in little swimming pool or training my slack line skills :) So far everything great and I didn't even mentioned the team yet... Everyone that works there is just amazing. Joel, who is the heart of the community, and everyone else who help him with maintaining the nicest experience you could imagine. No wonder that there were so many people there who came for their second or even third retreat. If I'll have some extra time at the end of my travel, I'm definitely going there for 1 more week. Thank you Hariharalaya, thanks to everyone who works there and thanks to everyone that I've met there for one of the best weeks since I started traveling."

"I've been here three times because I loved it so much, had truly inspiring experiences each time, made new connections and learnt so much! Joel and his crew at Hariharalya provide a truly blissful retreat experience complete with local bamboo huts, beautiful cozy pool, hammocks under a canopy of tropical fruit trees, juice bar (vegan ice cream sundae not to be missed!!!), great vegan meals 3x/day, spa area for massages, creative room for music and drawing, the fun outdoor "gym"... And there is also a serious program leading you (beginners and advanced yoga students alike) into a deeper understanding of "integral yoga" - so leave your idea of acrobatics behind and embark on the most gratifying journey into yourself! I particularly appreciated the silent meditation sessions twice daily as well as all the extra options like hidden temple journey, alignment workshop, dharma talks by Joel, acupuncture, ... Thank you for providing such a special place!"

I have practiced yoga for more than 15 years and this was the most authentic experience I have had outside of the teacher training I did in India. The accommodations was clean and thoughtful, the yoga grounded and the environment designed to heal. Go for it! You will feel shiny and new again after six days."

"I had such a wonderful and healthy holiday with Hariharalaya !! 6 days was gone like a blink. The friendly staff welcomed us at the meeting point in downtown and followed by tuk tuk ride to the quiet village. the schedule of each day is a bit different so you wouldn't feel like having the routine everyday however the meditation is taught on daily basis which is great because meditation is not like yoga or other activity, it needs more time to understand the meaning and how the way you breathe associates with you better when you meditate. You are able to select additional treatment such as massage, temple tour, one on one yoga posture correction with little extra charge or join the talks with various topics for free. i was always running around and chased by time because of my occupation and day after day I realize that I need a break from all this !! Hariharalaya did the magic to me !! whole environment has great vibe to slow you down and relax. Everyday you have 2-3 hours free time so you can hop on the bike to explore the nearby temple and village yourself. The meals they provided had been amazing !! Healthy fruit and vegan meals three meals a day. Clean eating yet it comes with great natural flavor and nutrition for your body. There is juice bar on site so you can go order it yourself when you are craving for a little treat after meditation or yoga class. You will start to feel the change the healthy diet brings to your body. and trust me, you will love that feeling. I felt the whole experience has taken off so much weight from my shoulder and I would highly recommend Hariharalaya to everybody who needs to detox yourself both mentally and physically. Thank you Hariharalaya !!! xx"

"The Hariharalya Retreat was the best part of a long trip abroad. I was not very experienced in either yoga or meditation and wanted to work on both in a relaxed environment. Hariharalaya exceeded my expectations. In just 5 days I greatly improved my yoga skills and now feel comfortable meditating for longer than 15 minutes. In addition I found the staff to be welcoming and friendly to everyone, regardless of age, skill level, or background. That attitude spread to attendees - all of us went away feeling like we met life-long friends."

    ""

"Many of the activities at the retreat were optional, which made this retreat feel more relaxed than others, but I recommend that attendees take advantage of as many of the activities as possible. The dance night, dharma talks, and afternoon yoga sessions really made an otherwise good retreat a truly excellent one. Thank you, Hariharalaya, for helping me start off 2016 in the best way possible."

"I imagine I'll come to think of my retreat at Hariharalaya as one of the best weeks of my 3 plus months of travel through south east Asia, perhaps one of the best weeks of my adult life. The centre is a beautiful retreat that makes you feel comfortably back-to-nature, and the staff are incredibly welcoming and engaged. While my yoga practice at home is much more physically intense, this was a chance to discover yoga in a new light, as the foundation for the equally (mentally) intense practice of meditation. I loved all the rituals of our days - being awoken by gongs, silent time before morning practice, sharing delicious meals and relaxing afternoons. And of course, the quickly-formed community of like-minded people (and still, people at varied points in their journey) is the magic that held the whole week together. Don't hesitate - just book this retreat!"

"Hariharalaya is the most harmonic and beautiful yoga and meditation place I've ever been to! I've never experienced Yoga on such an understanding, caring, enlightening and connecting level. I was a little afraid to find another place where Yoga is a competitive sport. But this place is just perfect - from the beautiful staff that encourages you during the classes, that prepares the most delicious meals, that is more a family and creates an atmosphere where everyone is equally at home in this beautiful natural environment. I'll definitely go back!"

"I had such an incredible time at Hariharalaya retreat centre. I came to the retreat after a very full on three weeks of work in Cambodia. From the very beginning we were all treated with such kindness and respect. I am a beginner to yoga and meditation and it was not a problem at all. Every practice was able to be tailored to whatever level you were at and was always able to ask for support from the teachers who could adjust your pose. I loved the message that yoga was for you and no-one else- and to never compare. Joel the founder is just bloody wonderful. He would sweep in at times, share such incredible wisdom and intense warmth and then quite mysteriously float away! He always had time to chat though and answered many of my questions. "

    ""

"The teachers were always there and really beautiful and very far from some yoga teachers who are intimidating and lack compassion for us un-flexible folk. The food was so epic- vegan abundance everyday. The accommodation was clean and earthy and very comfy. The people it attracts is also really great- such good vibes. My experience was made all the better because I had my 24th birthday at the retreat. It wasn't planned but I ended up there. I had one of the best days of my life starting with a beautiful group singing of happy birthday in our breakfast circle. The day was filled with huge smiles from everyone, hugs, happy birthday renditions in different languages, swimming, a special birthday dessert and a little gift. Best of all, I got to ring the gong. So much power! "

"The retreat was a place for contemplation, struggle, warmth, connection, a place to deal with grief and a place to celebrate the very essence of life. My vulnerability was celebrated and I felt SO safe. I cannot recommend this enough- it was a huge turning point in my life and my spiritual journey. Thank-you endlessly and humbly to my fellow yogis and the wonderful staff. Gah! It was just so so great. Go here with an open mind and heart and experience the essence of yourself and life. Peace, love and light."

"When I first registered i was looking for a place to do a silence retreat. At Hariharalaya not only I found a place to do it but with a crew and staff that respect it. Since I was the only one in silence, I was looking for people that respect my decision and would help me archive it. Thats exactly what I got out of it. The yoga, meditation session where really inspiring, the teacher are passionate about it and wait to see Joel. The place on its own is fantastic great room, great food, you have a lot of activities to do during the day. If you are looking for a meditation retreat and have many option, I highly recommend this one, since before going i was in the same position, and honestly I fell in love with this place."

Whether you're a keen yogi, a total beginner or deeply undertaking a spiritual journey, Hariharalaya not only guides you through this, but gives you an amazing opportunity to meet a diverse range of likeminded people. The yoga is incredible, the meditation is incredible and the facilities are great. The instructors are so amazing and so much fun, and the food is the best food I've had in Asia. I can't wait to go back."

"I went to Hariharilaya early September. Before, I hadn't practiced yoga regularly, but I took a couple beginner/intermediate classes. And I didn't know that much about meditation either.Because it's been a couple months, I will just share the highlights. Ever since my retreat, I still practice yoga and have made it part of my regular routine. I honestly can't imagine myself not doing it. It makes me feel relaxed and calm, and I noticed my body has become stronger and more flexible.I loved the vegan Mexican chili. Joel, the owner, gave us a pdf of the recipe and I've made it and brought it to potlucks.I miss the smoothie station, and I don't think I will ever find a coconut chocolate smoothie that would be as delicious as Hariharilaya's recipe.I honestly had the best massage of my life. And I have yet to find someone who knows how to massage my back as well as the blind masseuse.Joel was inspiring. He's very down-to-earth, approachable, and willing to share everything he knows. Everyone (staff and travelers) was kind, friendly, and welcoming. Thanks Hariharilaya for a sweet, memorable trip."

"I did the retreat to take a break during my travels in South East Asia. I was curious and needed a time-off. The week at Hariharalaya was a great experience. I stayed at the dorm, and it was really comfortable. The team and the local staff are friendly, and available always to help the guests.I had 0-experience with Yoga, however, Bianca did it really good, explaining a beginner as me, also the whole Team and Joel, were always, explaining many techniques of yoga and meditation. The optionals were also interesting: Blind massage, Hidden Temple yoga, or acupuncture and so on.Regarding food: I'm not vegan, but the vegan food was great, so I didn't miss other food.I spent some hours in the pool, after biking around the village. The environment was awesome, located around 10 km away from crowded Siam Reap, in the middle of a local village, surrounded by temples. The staff, working on the center, are locals living near there. So I found it a great idea, the retreat center supporting the locals.I just recommend it! I would do it again."

"The founder of Hariharalaya Joel Altman has created a remarkable legacy for our world. Don't miss it!. The 6 day yoga and meditation retreat stands firmly in its integrity. I deeply appreciated the experience. It is a wise integration of fun, amazing food, yoga, connection with likeminded people, meditation and as it roots it is built on Joel's deep commitment to the beauty of living in the here and now as an antidote to the craziness that hurts our world. The retreat can be enjoyed on many of these levels. Even if you are not looking for a deeply spiritual experience it can be enjoyed as just that; a healthy break from the chaos of wandering around wondering what your trip is all about. I was personally inspired by Joel's vision, that peace, health and contentment could be mine with discipline and practice and he would show me exactly what to do. No place like this is just one person and he has crafted a team of Cambodian staff and yoga/meditation instructors from all over that deliver the experience. The setting is sweetly wrapped on the outskirts of typical Cambodian village and far from the craziness of Siem Reap. So if you are reading this and thinking it sounds like work, you are likely wrong and likely the traveler who will get the most out of it. And unbelievably it is as little as $220 for the 6 days!"

During my - objectively very short - time there, I built a daily personal practice inspired by the fantastic yoga teachers, a deeper understanding of the process of awakening inspired by Joel, & a deeper understanding of myself inspired by the countless opportunities to exercise consciousness, creativity, and community-building.To the ever-transient (and yet no less enduring) Hariharalaya crew: I am beyond grateful for this 'experience of bliss.' In the words of Krishnamurti..."Every little object which ordinarily I would never have noticed seemed to have an extraordinary quality of its own, and strangely, everything seemed to be a part of me. Nothing was separate from me; in fact, the 'me' as the observer, the perceiver, was absent, if you know what I mean. There was no 'me' separate from that tree, or from that paper in the gutter, or from the birds that were calling to each other. It was a state of consciousness that I had never known."!!"

"Hariharalaya was definitely one of the highlights of my travel this summer. It was different than some of the other yoga retreats in and around Siem Reap for having a definitive in/out dates, instead of open rolling dates. But that actually was better in my opinion, having a structured schedule for everyone. We were picked up at a central location in Siem Reap. Checking in process was smooth and I was immediately impressed with the beautiful facility. I loved all the huts and the twin room I stayed was very comfortable. Though none of us ever really stayed in our rooms that much except to sleep. There is a small but nice pool, outdoor showers, and other amenities. The food here is one of the best ever! I am definitely more of a meat and potato kinda girl, yet I never missed meat during my stay. I looked forward to each meal wondering what kind of magic happened in the kitchen that day.Yoga was good for beginners as well as for those who have been practicing for a while. The teachers were invested in your learning. They were also all very dedicated to yoga practices. They were living what they were teaching us. Meditation was more challenging for me. But I learned how to sit better for meditation as well as how to breathe and focus.6 days/5nights at Hariharalaya did not make me a yoga or meditation expert but it definitely taught me the core elements that I am still using back home. "I was lucky enough to call Hariharalaya home for over a year, beginning with my time as a guest and later coming back to teach full time as a resident teacher. From the moment I was greeted by the manager Sean at the door, I felt at home. One of the most inspiring things about Hariharalaya is how warm, welcoming and genuinely happy all of the staff members are, and it's no wonder why... The founder of the center, Joel has poured his heart into Hariharalaya from the grounds to the outstanding food to the staff, all of whom he takes time to meet with individually, offering guidance on their own journey with yoga as well as finding ways to inspire others. The Cambodian staff is no exception. Joel's wife, Srey Pin is from the village as with many of her family and neighbors who are employed by the center. It really is one big extended family (guests included). As anyone who has come through Hariharalaya would agree, Joel's aim is clear: to offer guests the tools and inspiration to maintain a personal daily yoga practice after leaving. At the end of every retreat, we would discuss ways to cater the diverse offering of classes, workshops, treatments and private lessons to make this possible. It is a rare opportunity to be able to experience the quality of classes offered here while being in a remote farming village. Every afternoon as I rode my bike and was greeted by Cambodian children running around barefoot with the brightest smiles yelling "hello! hello!", I was reminded what a blessing the simple life can be. Even after a year, it's hard to express what this experience has been for me, but I think the number of exceptional reviews demonstrate that Hariharalaya is worth visiting. It's truly changed my life."

They clearly cater for all levels. The simple life allows you to reconnect with your own inner calling. It reminds you of who you are and why. The coconut smoothies are just incredible as is the cleaver wielding local who swiftly opens the coconuts with a few well aimed swings. The retreat is a beautiful oasis amongst the Cambodian countryside filled with lovely gardens, natural bungalows, a secret swimming pool, hammocks and lots of spaces to talk, read and relax. I loved being able to turn off my phone for the length of the retreat and really disconnect from the outside world. "We absolutely loved every minute of being here. Every part of Hariharilaya is beautiful. From the open sided yoga hall where you can look out into the countryside, the outdoor gym where you can try your hand at tightrope walking, to the wide wooden upstairs balcony where you can relax in a hammock with a book from the well stocked library or just watch the trees swaying in the breeze. The list is endless. The whole place just exudes positive feelings. The yoga and meditation were great for beginners (but there were very experienced people there as well who loved it). We especially enjoyed the alignment workshop and the private yoga lessons where we were able to build up personal practices. The vegan meals were truly delicious with lots of choice every day. I don't think there was a meal where we didn't go back for seconds it was that good and there was always more than enough to go round. Staff, both local and not, were exceptionally friendly. " From the regular yoga and meditation classes to the talks and workshops. From the vegan feasts to the green gym. We came with busy heads and stiff limbs and left after only 10 days feeling a sense of not only belonging but also of longing to return. A routine in place to take forward. since we left we have continued to practice the lessons we learnt. Being mindful and present, using patience with practice and opening our hearts to what really matters. with love and respect we extend our gratitude to Joel for his knowledge and guidance, Sean for his personality and professionalism, Jen for her introduction and communication, Claire, Amy, Stephan and Brittany for their classes, talks and treatments (awesome). What a wonderful place with amazing people. If you are looking for a retreat where you get pampered and spend time drinking cocktails in a spa... don't go. If however your looking to learn about the complete process of yoga and meditation. Find out about yourself and your place in this world, then there a few better things you could do than get in touch with Hariharlaya and yourself."

" As a beginner in yoga and completely new to meditation I came to Hariharalaya to give myself a break. I loved being there for 4 weeks and still miss it. The yoga classes taught by Claire and Amy are varied, challenging and exciting. I never thought my body could change so much in a months time. There is a morning session every day and sometimes another one in the afternoon. Combined with a personal practice that is quite a bit of time spent on the mat. The meditation was very challenging, sitting completely still for 20-60 minutes isn't easy! It has really helped me become calmer, overcome some challenges and leave things behind. Physically and mentally it hurts but the release is amazing. With an open mind Hariharalaya is a safe place to let go. Claire's words still go through my head: "It's ok to relax, it's ok to let go." It is a basic lifestyle, walking barefoot, cold showers, simple accommodation (amazing pillows!) but that's what I was after. Not having wifi or 20 computers (there is one) is great, people actually talk to each other again! The student program I found was set up well. The extra asana classes were fun and helpful; the weekly group meetings with Joel helped me get rid of what other people think of me, the silence days were a big plus too. After a month I feel confident to be myself, enjoy my daily practice and thank all of the staff for that! "
