Seasonal information

At Hacienda Del Sol, and in the Guanacaste area in general, expect warm, breezy days, with highs of 82 92 degrees, lows 75 85. Because of afternoon clouds, August through November are cooler months, highs in the 70s. Temperatures during January through April are in the mid to high-80s.

From the middle of December to the end of April it is rare that it will rain at all. This is the summer season here and excellent sunny weather can be guaranteed. Weather the rest of the year is explained below:

The green season is probably the best time to be in Costa Rica for a rain forest adventure. Rain here is not the same as it is in the temperate zones. This season is generally from 15 May to 1 November. Outdoor activities and work do not stop and you dont get cold. The general pattern is for it to rain 3 4 times a week, most likely in the afternoon and more likely at night. The days are evenly distributed between partly cloudy or overcast. It can mist or give you 8 inches an hour. If it rains that hard you want to be here. Its incredible.

The 15th of July is the middle of a usually occurring 6 week mini-dry season. Its called canicula in Spanish and though it is not guaranteed to be rain free the possibility of rain during this time is much less than the rest of the green season. Half of June and half of August are usually included in this period.

While May and October tend to be, over the years, the months with the heaviest rain there is no certainty that there will be much rain in either May or October.

"I spent 14 days at Hacienda Del Sol, and it was actually life changing. I've been battling being up and down 20 pounds almost my whole life. It wasn't until I met Ramiro (who owns HDS with his amazing wife Crystal), that I really understood the kind of eating habits I needed to develop for my body and metabolism. I'd never heard of a Keto diet before going, and in 2 short weeks I have totally ended my lifelong struggle with carbs and have a healthy relationship with eating good fat."

"The best part is Ramiro has stayed in touch with me to help me transition back to real life. He gave me a ton of resources and recipes to make the transition as easy as possible and it has been totally seamless and easy to maintain."

"Everyone was accommodating and friendly, from the incredible women who prepared our meals every day to the insightful and peace-inducing yoga instructors and bodywork practitioners. You MUST have a session with Mahi -- she has an incredible touch. Char's restorative yoga was one of the best classes I've ever taken."

"Ramiro was so accommodating in helping me organize a few outings (zip lining through the jungle and scuba lessons!), but if you just want to relax, eat good food and take care of your body you can do that too."

"I can't wait to go back. This was a truly unique, fulfilling and life changing experience."

"I had the pleasure of staying at Hacienda del Sol for two weeks after Christmas. I was in desperate need of a vacation after way too much work for years. I started looking for a holistic retreat that would force me to stop and focus only on myself and I absolutely found that at Hacienda del Sol. "

"This was my first time traveling internationally alone. Crystal arranged for a taxi to pick me up at the airport (I highly recommend this) as Hacienda del Sol is over two hrs away and very remote. The taxi driver comes from the town of San Juanillo (population 200) where Hacienda del Sol is located. I had no problem finding Tino (driver) waiting for me (Liberia airport is small- only 6 gates), he even stopped on the way and bought me a coconut to drink from a vendor on the side of the road. "

"Everyone at the resort was so kind and welcoming. I immediately made friends with several other girls who had either traveled alone or in pairs. Yoga is offered twice most days. I highly recommend taking a class by Angie. She teaches a style I had never done called kundalini, which is really motivating and inspiring. The vibe of Hacienda del Sol is very chill and geared toward listening to your body and taking care of yourself. The food is amazing, don't be scared of the raw diet it was so good it inspired me to continue eating a diet high in raw foods. You get a fresh smoothie or juice with each meal. There are no specific meal times, you just write down what you want and the time and the kitchen staff will have it ready for you. "

"I booked the Pura room for two weeks. Due to a glitch in their system the 2nd week was closed for a private Bikram yoga which I ended up joining and was awesome. The first few days I spent decompressing (sleeping and laying by the pool) and then, got more and more energy as time went on. By the end of the first week I was glad there was going to be a bit more going on during the second week at the yoga retreat. My personal suggestion is a week here is good, more and you may start to get bored. "

"The rooms are nice and clean and look directly out into the jungle. The resort has a total 12 rooms. At night you'll hear jungle noises including the howler monkeys (which sound like you're in Jurassic Park). There's no a/c but even with the daytime temperature being in the 90.s the room was cool in the evening. The black sand beach is amazing, most likely you'll be the only one on it and a 20-30 min walk away. I highly recommend walking down there for sunset, you can arrange for a cab to take you back for $5 (the same two cab drivers will take you wherever you need)."

"Overall if you're looking for a place get away, disconnect and recharge this is the place. Since I've been back I get numerous compliments on how I seem really good, grounded and happy. This place is life changing. Thank you to all the wonderful staff at Hacienda del Sol. for making it such a special place."

"I went to Hacienda del Sol because my friend highly recommended the cleanse. I arrived not knowing what to expect, and the cleansing changed my life. I just came back to NY and feel great and on my way to getting healthy again. The location is in the middle of the jungle, and we saw monkeys, giant turtles, and many exotic animals. The restaurant serves some of the best dishes I have ever tested, and the hotel accommodations are elegant, clean and super comfortable. There is a beautiful salt water pool and different classes offered all the time like Yoga and cooking lessons which we took, and the massage was the best I have ever had. The beaches are a close walking distance away, and we enjoyed them everyday.I highly recommend Hacienda del Sol and its treatments."

"Menlha has built a truly unparalleled eco retreat in the middle of the Costa Rican jungle. The juice cleanse allows you to "get away from it all" and heal anything and everything you set your intentions on. Sure you can go to a commercial resort, drink all the liquor you want and stuff your face and have a grand old time while you're there. But if you choose Hacienda del Sol, you WILL go home a different person, more equipped to handle life's curve balls and daily stressors - and that's an experience you can't get anywhere else. It's a vacation, an investment really, that keeps paying dividends well after you leave. Worth every penny. I'm hooked for life. Have gone twice thus far and will absolutely be returning with some regularity."

"I booked myself in for the Raw Food Detox and Yoga Retreat at Hacienda del Sol not knowing what to expect, and was completely blown away. The lodge is in the heart of the Costa Rican jungle and provides the perfect setting for relaxation and reflection. The night-time chorus of jungle creatures and the morning wake-up call from the howler monkeys just added to the experience. As part of the retreat, I participated in daily yoga classes (the outdoor studio, often overlooked by monkeys, was a far cry from my local sweaty gym) and had private raw food cookery lessons from my wonderful facilitator, Meg Pearson. Meg was the perfect host. I learned so much from her classes, but it was her hospitality (and that of everyone at Hacienda del Sol) that really made my stay (jungle hikes, trips to the beaches and surfing in nearby Nosara were certainly not part of the "package"). There are so many things that make Hacienda del Sol a unique and wonderful experience, but I can't finish this review without mentioning the food. It is amazing! I haven't since felt the same excitement of knowing that a chia seed pudding and After Sport smoothie were waiting for me after yoga! So all in all, a perfect location, delicious food and really lovely people."

"What an amazing week this was. I went by myself, looking for relaxing yet active and healthy week away from busy job & NYC. It exceeded all my expectations."

"The location, surroundings, rooms, pool, garden were all beautiful and very comfortable. The food & smoothies/juices were absolutely amazing: prepared on demand by the nicest kitchen personnel and tasted soooo good. I'm not an avid yogi, but the 90min morning classes were appropriate for all levels and quite active too which I liked (vs just the calming type). In addition I had a TRX package so got 4 personal training classes which were quite intense and a really good work out. Few trips were organized (like watching turtles, boat tour, beach walk), but all flexible to groups wishes. All the people working at Hacienda are amazing, super friendly and make you feel so at home. It was perfect and I can't wait to go back!"

"Hacienda del Sol is a rustic jungle retreat. The accommodations are clean and comfortable but primitive. It is not a five star hotel like a Ritz or Taj. The cabins have no glass windows, just screens. There is no AC. You can hear howler monkeys roaring in the jungle, which can be quite terrifying until you realize that they are no bigger than house cats! That said, the vegan raw food and cleansing juices are excellent, yoga and meditation classes abundant, and the staff is always friendly and accommodating. The property is lovely, with a nice salt water pool, and lush gardens. This is not a good place for anyone with mobility issues. There are lots of outdoors stairs and rocky paths between buildings. There is a lovely black sand beach about a half hour walk on a hilly dusty dirt road. Again only appropriate for fit travelers. Hacienda is great for those in relatively good health who want to become healthier, relax and make new friends."

It truly is a mind, body and soul rejuvenating experience when you visit. Almost everyone I met there comes every year or has visited more than once. That says something ;)Also, the Wellness Menu of massages, etc..Wow! You don't see that offered in many places. Have a look on the website for Food and Wellness menu. The people, location, food <3, and overall energy; words cannot explain the bliss of being there! I look forward to the day that I return <3 Happy to know such a wonderful place exists : ) I have been raving about it to everyone!"

I love the area (a secluded black sand beach is just one mile away), the property (the salt water pool is excellent day and night) and the staff, all of whom went out of their way to make me feel welcome. The food is amazing--I highly recommend a private raw cooking lesson with Meg. And my massage with Mahi was the best! I can't wait for my next visit."

"My wife and I spent 5-nights of our honeymoon trip at Hacienda del Sol (HDS). We found this on our own and would recommend it to everybody as it embodies the beauty of Costa Rica. The room was great (no A/C) with all necessary amenities, a beautiful washroom that overlooked the jungle and an outdoor bench and hammock. Daily yoga with Angie was refreshing and very effective. The meals were all pure vegan and despite not being vegan typically, we found it satisfying and yummy, especially the smoothies. The grounds are out of this world with all the natural jungle scenery making it a great spot to recharge. Service was top-notch with everyone catering specifically to our needs and desires. Situated on the west coast gives it a pristine feel with two excellent beaches about 1km away. One of them was a white sand beach and the other black sand with both beaches hardly used, making it very private as opposed to the very touristy Tamarindo which is only an hour drive away. We had a car with us which made it easy to leave the resort and plan day trips along the Pacific coast. Additionally, Hacienda is only 30 mins from Playa Guiones (Nosara) which is a great surf beach, especially for beginners. Hacienda del Sol was the highlight of our Costa Rica trip and alerted us to the significance of a plant-based diet. We did not do the Juice Cleanse but that seemed popular amongst the other patrons, who became good friends. Clientele seemed like well-traveled, fun, young professionals in their 30s-40s who were looking for a similar getaway experience. Also don't want to leave out the beautiful pool in the middle of the resort which was a real treat if you don't want to go to the beach. We are definitely returning to Hacienda del Sol."

"I decided to visit the eco resort La Hacienda as I needed a real break between leaving a very busy job and starting a new career. Words cannot express how amazing this place is. I was exhausted, frazzled and literally worn out and I came away from there full of life, energy and ready to take on the world. The resort itself has a small amount of bungalows, they are fairly basic but clean and welcoming. There is a gorgeous saltwater pool, a lovely outdoor restaurant, where they serve delicious juices and raw and vegan food and a small spa where they provide incredible massages and other treatments. The resort is in the middle of the rainforest, which means you get to experience the beautiful healing energy and wildlife that it provides, truly incredible! I did the detox juice programme followed by a week of raw food, both fantastic and very healing and cleansing on the body. There were also yoga (1-2/day), raw food classes and walks to gorgeous nearby beaches."

"Hacienda del Sol is a very special place. I stayed there for 21 days and had an incredible experience. The juice cleanse was very professionally organized and I felt truly supported by our wonderful juice cleanse mentor, who guided us through the program. The juices were delicious and I never felt hungry. If you are considering doing a juice cleanse at Hacienda del Sol, I would recommend doing it as part of one of their scheduled group cleanses! We had an amazing group, everyone was very supportive and it was much easier doing it with the support of a group of such great people.Everything I ate and drank at Hacienda del Sol was absolutely delicious. You can basically close your eyes and pick anything from the menu - you can't go wrong! Hacienda del Sols chef and her team have created a tasty, healthy and balanced menu and every dish is made with so much love. In addition to that there are daily specials to choose from. The cooking classes were very inspiring and I learned a lot about raw food preparation.I loved the yoga classes every morning - what a great way to start the day! They also have a salt-water pool for swimming and they offer unique personal training sessions, which I would really recommend if you would like to take your training/fitness to the next level. They also offer several jungle hikes to the beach as well as an incredible sunset boat tour. The daily evening meditations were a wonderful way to end the day mindfully.Make sure to book some body work sessions. All the therapists there are so talented and amazing at what they do! My favorite massage (ever!) was the Thai Herbal Ball massage. This place has been built and is run with such heart and soul. The team at Hacienda del Sol are all experts in their field, so knowledgeable and very passionate about what they do. They will do anything in their power to make your stay unforgettable! I was traveling alone, but immediately felt at home and also really enjoyed connecting with the other guests. What a unique opportunity to relax and rejuvenate surrounded by nature and with such special, inspiring people! I left feeling like a new person and am so grateful to have found Hacienda del Sol!"

We wanted to de stress and eat some healing food. We arrived just as they opened after the rainy season. Our welcoming night raw food dinner was truly delicious. I have never stayed at a Raw food resort before and was not sure what to expect. The tomato soup and the raw pizza were delicious and the raw chocolate truffle was the perfect ending. Meghan Pearson has put a lot of heart and soul into making this a place where people have the option to make a huge change in their relationship with food.Whether you are there to juice, or follow their raw food menu, or do both, you will not be disappointed. I loved our bungalow. The bathroom had no back wall and opened to the jungle. It was incredible to be part of nature while showering. As long as you are vigilant about keeping your mosquito netting closed over the bed at all times, you should be bug free. Yes, there were some bug bites, so bring repellent and some topical sting treatment, but I got some bites just last week at a big hotel in Florida. The practitioners who offer the massages and rebalancing are some of the best I have ever had work on me."

"Absolutely stunning place to re-charge and connect with nature. Food was amazing both in taste and presentation (mostly vegan, even though I'm not... I really enjoyed all the yummy treats); when I asked about the ingredients, the staff were kind enough to share many of the recipes. Loved the remoteness of the resort and the true jungle 'vibe'. The rooms were nicely furnished (natural wood/stone) and special bonus of balconies/hammocks backing onto the jungle."

"The proprietors are some of the warmest and most accommodating people you'll ever meet. This vacation is perfect for the unassuming, simple traveler who wants to relax, see some of the real Costa Rica, eat fabulously healthy food, and take advantage of the natural nearby wonders. This is not the place if you're looking for fancy or fussy. Rather, it's a place of real beauty, real people, and real gifts."

"Hacienda Del Sol is the perfect antidote to civilization. During my week stay I completely detoxified my body, soul, and spirit in this pristine natural location. The detoxification was run professionally, and the daily regimen of fresh juices was exactly what was needed for all my nutritional needs. The staff was available for anything I needed, and was extremely helpful in helping the group look at our individual needs. The best part of the trip was a full-blown ceremony on the beach. We swam for about an hour, watched the sunset, and sang songs. It was a unique and beautiful spiritual moment that I will always cherish."
