Curriculum

Vinyasa

The asana taught on this teacher training course is physically challenging, creative, alignment-orientated, and fun! In the classroom, Carol likes to play with a series of Vinyasa threads (sequences of postures, link with the breath) that she has developed over the years and adapt them to the needs of her group to help move students deeper into practice, safely and with awareness.

Carol also teaches technique classes where poses are broken down bio-mechanically and brings the yoga anatomy off the page. She always allows for a mixed level in her group by offering various expressions of the poses and encouraging students to work to their own level.

The initial focus is creating a solid foundation for practice and deeper awareness of the body anatomy and alignment. When the group clicks with the foundation, the practice will take off into more advanced work and students will be encouraged to work to their own ability.

Teaching skills

This training places a lot of emphasis on preparing new teachers to teach Level 1 and 2 classes. After asana, teaching skills is the second most important subject. Teachers will learn a foundation series and then adapt it playfully, within specific guidelines, as an expression of their unique voice. Teachers will prepare a class, including breathwork, asana, music playlist if used, and shavasana, and teach it to the group as a teaching exercise.

These focus of these classes is decided by the trainee; teachers may teach a relaxing beginners class or an upbeat level 2 core class. Teachers will also learn about the common issues that arise in the classroom and how to address them, whether they be physical ailments like slipped disc or high blood pressure, or boundary issues like people arriving late, not paying, etc.

Teachers are also shown how to dip their teaching into level 3 poses, and after graduation, teachers have the freedom to teach to the level they can practice comfortably.

Anatomy

The yoga anatomy taught on this 200-hour training primarily uses biomechanics as a foundation for practice. Biomechanics informs you exactly which muscles are contracted and released in different asanas, which muscles are the agonists (the primary movers), the antagonists (the muscles released), and the synergists (the assisting muscles of the primary mover).

This can really offer yoga students a lot of insight as to how their body works in relation to asana and allows for safety, ease, and intelligence in practice. Myo-fascial anatomy trains outline the muscle chains in the body and explain how they are connected in relation to movement. They teach you of how the body moves from an interconnected perspective and assist greatly in students developing their practice.

The trains are addressed in more detail on the 300-hour, but a foundation for them is given on the 200-hour. The anatomy allows students to dive into a deeper relationship with their bodies on and off the mat. Students who find when they know exactly which muscles to strengthen and release on the mat and why, they find more confidence to diver deeper into the practice. These classes will also equip you to understand what is happening in other people’s bodies, not just your own.

Ayurveda

This training gives the basics of Ayurveda, the sister science of yoga that is concerned with health and well-being. You will learn your dosha (constitution) and your guna (the energetic frame that you embody most) and how they relate to each other. You will also learn how to balance your dossiers and gunas through practices and apply the fundamentals of Ayurveda to your teaching.

Pranic healing energy work and meditations

  • The five sheaths meditation
  • The five sheaths and healing trauma
  • Kundalini meditations
  • Witness based meditations
  • Heart-based meditations
  • A collection of traditional pranayamas to cleanse the pranic body

The following practices may be used depending on the needs of the group and time.

  • Dynamic meditations
  • Kundalini trance dance
  • The five sheaths meditation
  • The five sheaths and healing trauma
  • Cellular DNA healing meditation
  • Open heart and Sufi heart meditations

Myo-fascial release work

Fascia is the tissue in the body that wraps around your organs, muscles, and bones connecting them into one whole, that you call the body. Myo-fascial release work releases “adhesions” in the fascia. Adhesions are when two or more muscles group together and think they are one muscle. There should be space in between the muscles so that they can glide over each other.

When this does not happen, they get stuck, reduce mobility, prevent movement, and sometimes create pain and weakness. Another reason why myofascial work is so important is that it hydrates the fascia. No matter how much water you drink, if your fascia is not receiving a blood supply, it will dehydrate creating stiffness.

Modern anatomy is also starting to acknowledge the connection between fascia and emotional memory; believing that fascia holds your tension patterns, trauma, and emotions; literally “your issues are in your tissues”. During fascia release work, many students report of emotional openings and release. This helps students move beyond the blocks toward inner peace and well-being.

Diet

On the longer training, groups are invited to do the “Saucha Sadhana” - a ten-day cleanse which gives recipes for juices, smoothies, and raw and cooked soups according to your individual dosha. There is also handouts on raw vegan living.

On the shorter training, there is just a short talk on a diet in relation to dosha and adding in more raw vegan foods into your diet. Students will also be invited into the Saucha Sadhana portal on the website and given handouts on raw vegan eating if desired.

Philosophy

The philosophy integrates elements from the spiritual systems Vedanta, Advaita Vedanta, Samkhya, and Tantra to overcome the battle of the mind-body, create resources for people on their life path, create deeper substance in your relationships, journey deeper into life’s mysteries, and help unlock the flow of Kundalini (divine evolutionary energy) to connect people with their power, freedom, and true nature.

Admission requirements

Green-Lotus-Yoga recommends that students have two years yoga practice before embarking on this yoga teacher training course.

  • The Art of Teacher Training Manual - will be supplied to you and is included in your course fees

Recommended books

You don’t use these books in class but they make a great home reading. Not necessary to bring to Spain with you if you buy them, as you won’t have time to read them there.

  • Anatomical: The Key Muscles of Hatha Yoga by Ray Long MD FRCSC and The Key Poses of Hatha Yoga by Ray Long MD FRCSC
  • Therapeutic: Yoga - The Path to Holistic Health B.K.S Iyengar
  • The Psoas Book by Liz Koch, The Knees by Susi Hately Aldous, The Shoulder Girdle by Susi Hately Aldous, and The Sacro Iliac Joints by Suis Hately Aldous

  • Iyengar: Yoga The Iyengar Way
  • Spiritual: A Path with A Heart by Jack Kornfield and Practical Yoga Psychology by Dr. Rishi Vivekananda

It is best to buy the books as soon as possible to start your reading before the teacher training course begins. It is not a pre-requisite to pre-read books before the teacher training course, but during the teacher training course, you will be learning a lot of new vocabularies, whether it is anatomy, alignment, Sanskrit, etc. so the sooner you get started the better.

Green-Lotus-Yoga advises you to start with The Art of Teaching Yoga Manual and the Anatomy books. You do need to bring the required books with you and they should be in English.

  • Noah McKenna

In 2003, Noah completed the six-month yoga therapy program at VYASA University Bangalore, India. He has spent three years in Mysore, India, over eight visits since 1995, and practiced intensively with Indian masters B.N.S Iyengar and V. Venkatesha. Goa

Goa is India’s smallest - and some would say most friendly - state, boasting some of the best beaches in Asia. However, it’s not just sand, sea, and sunsets. Goa’s mix of Indian and Portuguese heritage means you will find white churches poking out from the coconut palms alongside Hindu temples. Patnem beach is a very safe place for guests to arrive alone and go out at night.

Whilst some of the north Goa has suffered from over-development, the far south is still unspoiled, with its lush mountain range, beautiful backwaters, and long golden beaches. It is against this peaceful tropical backdrop in Goa that Bamboo runs its yoga holidays and retreats.

Bamboo Yoga Retreat

Located directly behind the ocean shala and beachfront lounge, and just steps from Patnem beach, the boutique bungalows are designed to help you reconnect with nature. Whether watching the eagles soar overhead from the hammock on your balcony or falling asleep to the sound of the waves, the normal stresses of life melt away and you will feel open to a more profound yoga practice.

This training is a perfect opportunity to learn how to teach yoga in a nurturing, healthy, and supportive environment, where you can really unwind deeply as you move deeper into your practice. One of the advantages of training on an intensive retreat, as opposed to the longer training, is that you can totally immerse yourself in the work involved, with the support of a group, with no interruptions from usual responsibilities.

Bamboo Yoga Retreat can offer you the chance to discover depths in your yoga practice in an environment that supports healing and rejuvenation. The waves of the ocean will lull you into a peaceful sleep after an active day of yoga. There are four yoga platforms scattered through the center, two with stunning views overlooking the Arabian Sea and the other with a quieter temple energy looking out onto open green tropics.

The Lunch Club by KOKOindia offers a unique cultural experience ‘beyond the beach’, with a private tour of one of Goa’s grand mansions and an authentic Indo-Portuguese lunch in a restored Palacio.

Nature exploration

Nature lovers will enjoy Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary, one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots just a few kilometers south of Patnem. Whether or not you catch a glimpse of an elusive leopard or a troop of monkeys, the mountainous jungle scenery is spectacular.

Night market shopping

Shoppers and souvenir seekers will love the weekly flea and night markets in north Goa, where you can find everything from silk scarves and silver jewelry to sandals, sarongs, and spices. Remember to haggle - it’s all part of the experience.

"What an experience! Carol guided me to break boundaries - both mental and physical. Her teaching voice is compassionate yet authoritative, with the right amount of fun thrown in. She always strive to be "heart-full" in her teaching. Look her up. It may very well be the best thing you ever did. For me, it's definitely up there."

"It has been a privilege to train with a teacher of Carol’s caliber. Her dedication, passion, and knowledge are incredible. Her ability to ‘get’ where each of her students are in their bodies, and how and when they are ready to be pushed to the next stage, to open or strengthen the body more, and develop towards the next expression of the pose is more than reassuring, it is impressive. Her creative ability to spontaneously ‘workshop’ a pose that she feels the class is having difficulty with is inspirational and effective. "

"In her led practice, you may suddenly find yourself in a pose that only moments before was unavailable to you! Her ability to relate modern anatomy to the poses really helps students to deepen the expression of a pose safely and effectively both in their own practice and also provides them with the relevant points, via her training manual, to pass on to their own students. "

"Her training aims to equip students with more than just the basics. She passes on her knowledge of the energetics involved in each asana in order that student teachers can then emulate her teaching style, by using the framework she provides, to co-create balanced classes with their own students. Of course, this is equally helpful in developing one’s own home practice. "

"Carol introduces other aspects of yoga and spirituality too - many interesting and eye-opening discussion has been had in class! I would highly recommend training with Carol, especially if you like training hard!"

"Be prepared for a life changing experience. My training was a very personal journey which has given me the tools to deal with anything life throws at me and the ability to move chaos into order. It has thought me to observe rather than react in my asana practice, and to be patient with my body. This course has been a journey of self-reflection and discipline where I learned to tackle the body and mind bringing me to a place of stillness. "

"The training had well thought out techniques and alignment principles which has me very confident that I could teach yoga safely. The course is very well structured. The early week intensive training in Spain built immense trust and fantastic relationships within our group which continued and grew throughout the nine months on our weekend trainings. There was never a sense of competition and the only ego to deal with was your own. "

"Carol is an amazing and well-experienced teacher. Her passion, her knowledge, her belief, and love for all aspects of yoga is inspiring! She always radiates positive energy, yet is assertive when she needs to be. I appreciate the pressure that was put on me to learn alignment principles in order to modify some of my previous ways of practicing to bring me to a safer more aware practice. "

"The ten-day detox was great - it thought me about foods and superfoods which were essential in keeping my dosha in balance thereby grounding and calming me from the inside out. My diet is a lot healthier and more interesting as a result of this course and the nutribullet is now one of my favorite companions. "

"Finally, this course is hard work and a big commitment but so enjoyable and interesting with such rewarding returns. Carol is talented, intelligent, grounded, humble, and has great wisdom and experiences which she generously imparts. Thank you for sharing some of your expertise with me. Namaste."

"The thought struck me today to get in touch - just really to express in words a little gratitude (which I do in my mind and sharing with people but thought maybe never directly to you since the course days!). Gratitude for the training and the yoga years in Devon Lodge. "

"I feel I may have underestimated what I believe the true value of your work and what I learned from it was to go back to the core principles and teachings. And during the course, from a physio point of view too, I always really loved, trusted, and respected the work and way you brought and presented the teachings."

"I’ve been thinking to write you an email for ages. Mostly just to tell you how grateful I am that I took your teacher training 2 years ago in Spain. I’ve been teaching ever since."

"This year I spent almost 2 months in Rishikesh, India where I took my 300hr training. There I realized how strong yoga foundation you have given me comparing to other students. I must say I loved my time spent in India, I learned a lot about myself as a person and I definitely grew as a person but yoga wise – I don’t think I learned as much as I did from your 200hr training. Maybe those were cultural differences and perception of yoga in general. I don’t want to compare anything really, because all knowledge is good but when I’m teaching my classes – I still come back to your teachings. Thank you!"
