Born and raised in the Puget Sound region of the Pacific Northwest, Melissa has always been interested in the natural environment, science and health and fitness. She brings her passion and love for yoga and meditation to Get in the Wild where she helped create the Yoga In The Wild program. This unique program combines the art and practice of yoga with the unique and amazing wonders of the natural environment. Melissa's classes focus on connecting to the rhythms of nature, accessibility and tuning into one's self through hatha and restorative yoga classes.
Capitol Reef National Park was first established as a National Monument in 1937 and later declared a National Park in 1971. Located in south-central Utah in the heart of red rock country, Capitol Reef National Park offers guests a seemingly endless playground of nearly 100 miles of wind swept slickrock, grand vista points and hints to cultures that came before.
Before Capital Reef became a National Park, it was the homeland to a variety of different cultures and peoples for thousands of years. Archaic hunters and gatherers migrated through the canyons. Around 500CE, the Fremont Culture utilized the lands to grow corn, beans and squash. Pictographs and petroglyphs remain as sacred remnants of their presence. In the 1800s, early explorers and Mormon pioneers settled the land in the Fruita area and their apple, pear, and peach orchards remain today.
The most notable geological feature in Capitol Reef National Park is the nearly 100-mile long Waterpocket Fold. The park is named after the white domes of sandstone which resemble the “capitol” building and the uplifted fold which formed a barrier to travel like a “reef”.
