Why CEOs, actors, and pop stars love Transcendental Meditation

The Beatles have famously credited Transcendental Meditation with helping them write their best music. Oprah Winfrey loves her daily practice. So does billionaire hedge fund founder Ray Dalio, as well as British comedian Russell Brand, and music mogul Russell Simmons. In fact, the list of celebrities and Fortune 500 CEOs who say Transcendental Meditation has helped them in their personal and professional lives is so long.

“TM,” is short for Transcendental Meditation, the acronym used by insiders, is the practice of sitting for 20 minutes, twice a day, repeating a personal mantra given to you by a TM teacher. The technique is based on a Vedic tradition, an ancient Indian process of enlightenment. Fifty years ago, spiritual leader Maharishi Mahesh yogi introduced the practice to the rest of the world, founding the Transcendental Meditation Program.

Creating a creative edge

According to the program, TM allows your mind to settle into a state of pure awareness, known as transcendental consciousness. In this state, the body is at its most relaxed, and the brain supposedly has the greatest access to its creative energy. Devotees claim that TM gives them a creative edge, allowing them to be more focused throughout the day and access innovative ideas.

Transcendental Meditation’s big health claims

TM probably has more medical studies behind it than any other meditation practice, which is why in addition to helping reduce the effects of stress and trauma, it’s routinely hailed as a kind of cure-all for issues ranging from high blood pressure to diabetes.

Research suggests these claims aren’t overblown. One UCLA Medical School study on patients with heart disease found that those who practiced TM had lower blood pressure and improved blood glucose and insulin levels (linked to diabetes).

Several other studies have suggested that TM can actually slow the aging process and increase longevity among its practitioners. Not surprisingly, these anti-aging benefits regularly draw new converts (and Hollywood types), who stay for the peace of mind.

Scientific research shows that a few minutes of the Transcendental Meditation technique morning and evening naturally produces a wide range of practical benefits:

  • Use your total brain
  • Prevent and reverse heart disease
  • Promote health and youthfulness
  • Enjoy more happiness
  • Inner peace and creativity
  • Have better work and life balance

Wayan Sutrisna

Wayan Sutrisna was born in in 1973, in Bali, Indonesia and follows all the Balinese culture and traditional ceremony practices. Wayan is presently 43 years old and his passions are his family and teaching higher levels of consciousness through Transcendental Meditation (TM). He finished his under graduated degree in management at Janabadra University, Yogyakarta, Central Java in 1997.

Wayan then started his career in business, and worked his way up the ladder of success and finally became an international sale and marketing director for a very famous Jewelry company in Bali. In 2002, he started his Transcendental Meditation (TM) practice and never missed his program twice a day, as instructed by his TM Teacher, Alan Florance of Australia. He showed great promise and his interest and knowledge in the Vedic Arts and Sciences grew. In 2005, he took the Science of Creative Intelligent Course, and became an English Indonesian translator for other members of the class. He listened to Maharishi's tape in English, and translated it to other course participants, so he got three-time knowledge in each class he translated for (first listening, second translated in his mind from English to Indonesian and third speaking it to the class).

In 2006, Wayan joined the International Teacher Training Course (TTC) at Maharishi Campus in Thailand for five and a half months. He studied for eight hours a day with very little breaks in this intense immersion in the meditation practices of Maharishi Mahesh yogi. He lived on the campus, never traveling outside of the campus. With strict focus on meditation and knowledge, the TTC completely transformation his life. Wayan received a very big honor in the form of a scholarship to join the Next Generation Course With Maharaja Adiraj Raja Raam on September 2014 at Maharishi Vedic City, Fairfile, Iowa, USA. He was gifted a round-trip flight, full room and board and a scholarship to study Maharaja speeches about higher state of consciousness, unity consciousness, and some higher meditation practices. Once finishing his TTC, Wayan kept on teaching Maharishi's knowledge to students in the evenings after his work day was over.

After more than 15 years in the business, and travel to some other countries in Asia, Europe, Australia, and US to deal with his business partners, it has given him a lot of experience meeting great people all over the world. A Swami Vigyananad, a rocket designer for the Government of India, inspired Wayan to become a director to teach the knowledge of Maharishi full time. Wayan then decided to leave his high paying corporate job and focus on teaching the knowledge of Maharishi, and raise the collective consciousness in Bali and the world. Wayan has taught hundreds of students at high school and university levels to raise the collective consciousness and help Bali and the rest of Indonesia become an invincible problem-free society.

"Booked a week long stay at Villa Gaia in February. I travelled there from Sydney, Australia. Despite my concerns that my flight had been delayed, my driver from the Villa was there waiting for me which was very comforting as I was traveling alone and it was the early hours of the morning when I arrived."

"The staff at the Villa were outstanding in their quest to make sure that my stay was perfect. I had the most blissful time, having massages and treatments every day. A special mention to Monica who arranged extra trips for me to experience the beauty and magic of Bali. I cannot praise this place enough."

"This retreat in Bali was a surprise birthday present from my beloved. The whole experience was truly one of the most pivotal in my life, made magic by our surroundings, and tranquility of Villa Gaia."

"We were cared for as Gods and Goddesses, and treated to food so delicious and lovingly prepared. We must say a special thanks to Dwi, who prepared a traditional Balinese wedding for us with only three days notice. Two priests and a fire ceremony, Balinese dancers, traditional dress for us both, even someone to do my makeup! All in the surrounds of the retreat under a beautifully decorated altar erected by the wonderful staff. "

"It really was a humbling experience. We felt so loved, we can't say 'thank you' enough Dwi, Glen, and all your magical staff. I will remember this for my lifetime."

"I arrived a few days early before attending an organised Divine Soul retreat to be held at the same premises. I was warmly greeted and supported by all staff for guidance on transport (local and airport transfers), meals, local attractions, Bali culture. Nothing is ever a problem. Very close to central Ubud, with a gorgeous building capturing the natural flow of outdoor indoor living. I always looked forward to meals, food was just divine, and so healthy. Their pool is just gorgeous on a terrace that over looks, rice fields and natural forest. Their rooms varied in design catering for all needs, air conditioning, clean, with comfortable beds, fantastic design for group retreat. Just loved the outdoor shower, looking up at the stars at night. Massages were organised that were heavenly with a long list of choices including other treatments. They even quickly organised a Balinese wedding ceremony for a couple in our group at short notice, what an amazing ceremony and experience, Balinese priest providing a traditional loving Balinese wedding ceremony full of decoration, costume and Balinese girls in traditional costume dancing. Villa Gaia truly go out of their way to support their guests. I always wanted to see humming birds, and to my delight in the hibiscus tree next to the pool there they were, I also saw over looking the view of rice fields forest fire flies (two ticks off my bucket list)! The sound of Bali hums in this special place of paradise, and hope to return here with my beloved on another retreat. Thank you Villa Gaia for your gracious hospitality for my stay on my own and for our retreat group, a fantastic location, premises and staff. Highly recommend."

"There is no shortage of villas, resorts or homestays in Ubud. But Villa Gaia will make you feel lucky every minute you're there. The view, the feeling of seclusion, the huge open main room in the center that is perfect for large groups or just a party of one. The staff has been trained to a fare-thee-well. They know how to cook to accommodate any diet, with an emphasis on healthy, vegan food. Each room is unique, unlike the others, but all have AC and a creatively built and luxurious bathroom area. It looks great, it smells great (night-blooming jasmine every PM), but above all it's the friendly staff that makes the house a home."

"I have just returned from a nine day yoga and detox retreat at Villa Gaia. The villa is set in a beautiful location just outside of the town overlooking rice paddy fields. The team who run it are very friendly and helpful and I felt very much cared for and supported throughout my whole stay. What made my trip especially memorable - and an experience I will never forget - was the facilitator who took me through the detox, Melissa. A truly vivacious, bright light who not only nurtured and guided me through the detox but also shared and included me in her Bali. This meant, I believe, that I had some experiences that other tourists might not. Gaia and Melissa have left a lasting impression on me and I am so glad I invested in myself to go there. As a result I feel stress free and energized. Long may it last! "

"Though it did not take away from my experience or impression of Villa Gaia, I would mention that it can sometimes feel a little disorganized and there needs to be more clarity on what it is you are signing up for. i.e. I was sent a suggested itinerary of what my stay included as an initial quote, what I actually received, though wonderful, did not match up. All a bit confusing. I would also add that though some of the massage therapists are excellent, however, some need more training."

"Thank you Villa Gaia, I hope to come back soon."

"There are a lot of positive things with this place and a couple of negative ones. To start with the positive - the rooms and all area is nice, well maintained, clean and walking distance from Ubud center. The rooms are spacious, nicely decorated. Villa has a big open communal area to enjoy and appreciate the green surroundings of the rice fields. It is a quite area away from busy streets and any noise."

    ""

"The downside of the place was the staff. Staff was friendly and nice, but was rarely around and most of the time reception was unattended with none being there to ask questions or help with whatever you might need. It is ok if you are used to challenges but a bit inconvenient as there was often none around to help you with transport, book treatments or answer other questions. The place also does not have a working kitchen and only serve"

"All I can say is that I had a wonderful stay Gaia Retreat Centre. "

    ""

"Before making the booking, I was rather apprehensive about whether or not I do could a juice only detox and that thought of a 'closed hydrotherapy colonic system' really made me nervous. However Monica gave me all the information I needed and answered all of my questions, reassuring me that everything would be managed to the most professional manner and I would be able to adjust the program to suit during my stay. This made me feel at ease. "

    ""

"During my stay that staff were very welcoming, attentive and informative. We discussed the program at length. Monica showed me what extra vitamins and things I had to take, when I needed to take them and how to take them. Then the first thing I had to get settled was a massage which really made you relaxed. A great start to any program. "

    ""

"The resort was quiet and relaxing, it almost felt as though it was my house. Everything I needed was in the fridge with name and times of when I needed to have it and the rest where payed out on the bench. "

    ""

"The colonic were done at their Holistic center which was in town and the nursing staff there were just as attentive and calming. It also helped to know that they were all working nurses at the local hospitals, so cleanliness was a top priority. Mila was my nurse and is an ICU nurse. She was awesome, just knew how to make you feel relaxed and not embarrassed about the process of a colonic. "

    ""

"The only criticism I would say is that the house is a little tired (aged). Things like the bathrooms and bar area could be renovated slightly and small general upkeep items like Mose on the stairs leading to the pool and sauna should be scrubbed for safety. "

"I would have also liked advanced yoga sessions and extra sessions throughout the day."

    ""

"Overall my stay was wonderful, I feel cleaned and refreshed. I now wish I stayed the week. "

"I would definitely go back and recommend it to others."

"I booked a 14 day detox over Christmas and New Year (2015 - 2016). It was the best present I have ever given myself. "

"The detox is 14 days of juices and some broth at night (when I needed it), massages, healing sessions with amazing healers, colonics, yoga, and friendly drivers to take you to the outside appointments and visits. "

"I was expecting headaches, but honestly, there were none, maybe because we are sent documentation before the detox to prepare (and I followed the instructions), maybe it was the colonics, or the constant fresh air... "

"The healing detox is customised to each guest - and all the staff are part of the healing and part of making the stay feel like we are an important guest, and not just a number."

"I fully plan on returning with friends and family - or even by myself again. The energy is so positive, it seems that the only guests they receive are also positive."

"This would be my third time in Bali and 1st time in Ubud, first time doing a detox program. I signed up for the seven day cleanse. The moment i entered my bamboo-room late on the first day, i felt already at ease with the nature and it was beautiful morning next day with the winds and greens. The energy is soothing and relaxing.I did not expect the time is filled with pampering activities, with some good breaks in between. Monica facilitates the schedule and accommodates to individual preferences for your best comfort. The staff were nice and so are all the therapists, healers, drivers, instructors, and nurses. "

"I have no worries about location since the transportation is always well arranged. Ubud is easy to access anywhere too.Overall a great value in price as I received lot more, Gaia gives some level of quality in comfort, not overtly luxurious. Hence, I feel so comfortable like it is my home, by the third day. There are imperfections, but the oversights are also addressed once mentioned, which is what makes the stay so pleasant. I enjoyed my entire time, first time and not looking to try anything less or more Gaia."

"We recently had the pleasure of completing our first full seven day detox with Gaia Retreat and all we can say - it was an amazing and truly unique experience from fay one till the moment we had to say goodbye.Though we stayed at the nearby Wapa Di Ume resort for the duration of our detox program, we spent our first night in one of the rooms at Villa Gaia (the one on the ground floor overlooking the pool and rice fields). The room was clean and spacious with a huge bathroom and beautiful open-air shower. The reason we decided to stay at the different venue was just because being a couple on an individual detox program we wanted more privacy as Villa Gaia is quite small and might get a little bit busy during the day. Apart from that, the place, the staff, the service, everything was just perfect. You can feel good vibes and energy while you are there. This is the right place to relax, rejuvenate and recharge your batteries. Special thanks go to Monica, coordinator of personalised detox retreats, who did an excellent job tailoring our program to our likes and needs. Not only she coordinated the timely delivery of fresh juices, massage sessions and other health-related procedures, she also went beyond our expectations offering us different activities during the day to help us have a true Balinese experience. To name a few, we travelled to holy water springs, numerous temples, Monkey Forest, rice fields, etc. Besides, all of our additional requests like private yoga sessions, tennis court were dealt with quickly and courteously. She always offered her time and energy to make our stay even more comfortable and pleasant than we have expected.Completing a full seven day detox is not easy. You lack energy, you don't always feel good, you might have mood swings, etc. But it's definitely easier to experience it when you are surrounded by beautiful Ubud nature and beautiful people with positive energy and thoughts. Thank you Villa Gaia family for this amazing week! We will be back!!!"

"I recently ran a retreat at Villa Gaia and the participants and I were blown away by the experience of living, practicing yoga and meditation, and dining there for the week. The bedrooms are beautifully designed and well kept and the salt water pool, sauna and hot tub with panoramic views were fantastic perks. I can say with confidence that Villa Gaia serves the best food you can find in Ubud, hands down. The owner, Glenn, was continually offering a helping and supportive hand in preparation for the retreat and the manager, Dwi, is someone the participants will never forget; he constantly offered his time and energy to enhance the experience for participants and help them have a true Balinese experience. The staff was always helpful and accommodating. The energy there is magnificent - it feels like its own kingdom overlooking the rice fields. I would highly recommend running a retreat at Villa Gaia to anyone looking for an unforgettable and beautifully curated experience. Stayed April 2015, and traveled on business."
