This quaint venue used to be the only school in the Eskdale Valley. Meditate With Horses scouted hard to choose this location. It is simple, rudimentary, and has everything you need for an amazing and life-changing wild retreat.

There are two private twin rooms and a dorm that sleeps six. There are also two large toilets and shower blocks and a space for workshops and yoga. They also offer camping options on fully facilitated camping sites for those who cannot share space and have missed out on private rooms. They also provide screens, ear plugs, and eye masks.

Program

Immerse yourself in this soul-nourishing retreat near Boot Eskdale, surrounded by the awe-inspiring beauty of the Lake District. Connect with like-minded women, gentle horses, and the healing power of nature. Return home feeling refreshed, empowered, and part of a lasting sisterhood.

The forest, the falls, the pools, and the mountains stir an ancient memory and tie you to the everlasting. You are healed and brought back to life by the undeniable kinship with the wild feminine. Domestication outlawed by the surrounding culture may have buried this or no longer understood. You may have forgotten her name and may not answer when she calls, but in your bones, you yearn for her.

You know she belongs to you and you to her: to live out her ways and to gift ceremoniously to your daughters. This retreat is not for the faint-hearted and will be transformational for women who are ready to step over the threshold of separation into oneness. There is no judgment in that statement whatsoever. You are all at different chapters in your stories and at various stages of either letting go of fear or acknowledging it so that you can let it go.

Often you perceive your “happy place," your sense of coming home, of the greatest ease and comfort, as the only place you need to attain to heal; your space, silence, privacy, surrounded only by positive energy, crystals, and whale song, for example. The wilder woman takes you beyond that. Beyond the need for solace from difficult feelings and a perceived desired outcome. You trust the mystery and walk through the fire.

In what form does the fire take?

You are very close to nature and in very close proximity to one another. Whatever that brings, rain, tears, fears, and truth.

Wild swimming

You get in the cold water in its most natural state. In the form of green rivers, falls, or lakes. Keeping yourself in concrete boxes at a constant temperature of around 18 degrees decreases your natural capacity for homeostasis. Homeostasis is any self-regulating process by which you tend to maintain stability while adjusting to conditions that are best for your survival.

As you wrap yourself in unfluctuating states of comfort, you lose the ability to regulate your natural body temperatures, immunity, feelings of well-being, and emotions. This makes you vulnerable and afraid of change—something that is inevitable in your life.

Equine therapy

Horses act as a mirror. They mimic your heart rate, misgivings, emotions, and hormonal fluctuations. To sit in pure connection with a horse for a couple of hours requires self-awareness. Naked self-awareness. If you are ready to let go of the stories, the perceived conceptual roles that you play, and the attachment to self-identification, then the capacity for real awakening is limitless.

Sisterhood

Women have been subordinated for thousands of years in all corners of the globe, and the prevailing methodology is to divide and rule. Being in sister circles requires you to drop your misgivings of the other woman. To open yourself up to allowing yourself to be nurtured and cared for by a love that knows no agenda other than the pure and natural feminine urge to create and cultivate. As the judgments drop away, your heart opens, and the bonding capacity is deeply profound and fulfilling.

Sharing space

Being nearby and sharing sleeping space is something Meditate With Horses would strongly encourage. Part of the magic of retreats as a whole is that it brings people together, and you get to be around a variety of energies, world views, and narratives. All this is within the context of coming from the same feminine blueprint and collective consciousness. Learning to share personal space is a huge step on the way to well-being, acceptance, and joy within yourself, within the world, and for those around you.

The “cult of the individual” that has been driving Western culture, in their judgment, is at the root of your emotional distress and discontent. Community and togetherness are keys to happiness, and feminine unity is key to strength. The wilder woman leads you right to the center of this warm light of union. Sharing space highlights your sharp corners and polishes your edges so that you become well-adjusted to well-being and well-rounded, and you walk through the world with grace and sovereignty.

Being within the wilderness

You spend a lot of time outside in one of the most beautiful national parks in the world. You prepare yourself for this so that you can get barefoot and wild and fully participate in this beautiful green and blue jewel of a planet. They have chosen one of the most stunning valleys with ancient woodland, pristine and raw rivers, and plunge pools, surrounded by rolling mountains. You will spend as much time experiencing it in as many ways as you can. You will cook outside, forage, swim, sing, dance, walk, circle, and meditate.

The retreat center is merely a place to get dry, warm, and sleep. All the things that might seem tiny and insignificant, cumbersome, or irritating will become great and immeasurable as you become more and more present to the miracle and abundance of the natural world around you. Where the rain becomes less of a nuisance and more like poetry. Where you learn to be open to what can be beautiful about every given moment instead of what could possibly go wrong with it. This is the true spirit of the wild woman.

Retreat location

The retreat will take place in Cumberland, England, United Kingdom. This is the only place in England where mountains plunge almost directly into the sea. It is a mixed and dramatic landscape, going from steep, craggy, and volcanic uplands through softer, broader land and down to its wide open, tidal estuary at Ravenglass. The valley is pure and unspoiled, timeless, and alive with magic. A beautiful river runs right through the length of the valley, feeding the abundant forest and diverse flora and fauna.

The wildlife enjoys the lush peace and protection that the surrounding mountains provide, and you will see it in abundance. The jewel of the valley are the waterfalls and plunge pools, which make a wild swimming experience that most people can only dream of. The main source of transport is La'al Ratty, a tiny steam train that runs through the length of the valley from Ravenglass. The magic of this place will fill your soul the minute you arrive.
