The lodge has nine detached en-suite roundhouses which surround the centerpiece pool. All roundhouses have their own fruiting trees which supply shade, privacy, and of course fruit. There are two stylish, self-contained log cabins set in their own grounds which have a kitchen, lounge and bathroom, and two double bedrooms. They also have their own bantabas and hammocks to enjoy relaxing afternoons in the shade.

Finally, there is the clay brick house called Sunbird House again set in its own grounds and has a kitchen, lounge, balcony, and two en-suite double bedrooms. The accommodation is clean and comfortable, and in keeping with the strong eco ethos, has odorless, composting toilets that use no water. The hot water is solar powered and grey water is recycled.

Yoga area

The designated yoga area is set back from the lodge in just under an acre of its own grounds. It is based on a large bantaba (traditional thatched African meeting hut) and will be used for group sessions of maximum 18 persons. There will also be decked areas under the trees for individual practice. Mats, blocks, and bolsters are provided.

The yoga area has many fruiting trees (oranges, bananas, avocado, and grapefruit), palm trees, flowers, various plants and mature trees, an abundance of birdlife, and even its own well. It's a true tranquility, ideal for yoga practice.

Gambia is small and narrow and its borders mirror the Gambia River. The area is less than 48.2 kilometers (30.0 miles) wide at its widest point, with a total area of 11,295 square kilometers. Approximately 1,300 square kilometers (11.5%) of the Gambia’s area is covered by water.

Gambia is the smallest country on the continent of Africa. It is surrounded on three sides by Senegal, with 50 miles of coastline on the Atlantic Ocean on its western side. It has a population of 1.7 million people.

Footsteps Eco Lodge

Footsteps Eco Lodge is an award winning eco-lodge and is 100% operated on sustainable and ecological principles. The lodge is in a stunning rural tranquil location in the bush, next to a protected forest with an array of bird life and monkeys, and only a 20 - 30 minutes' walk to kilometers of deserted golden sandy beaches. This is a peaceful serene natural sanctuary, an ideal place for yoga.

The lodge offers authentic, intelligently designed, cool accommodation in natural, relaxed, and friendly surroundings. The venue is completely off-grid with solar panels, hot water, composting toilets, grey water recycling, and the grounds are full of fruiting trees, vegetables and flowers. It also has the only freshwater pool in Gambia.

  • Sue Marshall

Sue has been teaching for 16 years and the discovery of Astanga Vinyasa yoga whilst in Crete at Yoga Plus was a revelation. Combining the wonderful flow of the postures was reminiscent to dance, and she was hooked. She returned to Crete and did a teacher training with Radha and also David Swenson. She has studied Viniyoga and done a teacher training in that also and loved finding out more about the history of yoga and some of the texts, especially Patanjali's Sutras. Her practice has evolved to a more Vinyasa flow base and she was inspired by attending classes with Julie Martin at Brahmani Yoga.

"This was my first yoga retreat and I really think I hit lucky! Mavros Molos is a superb location, the hotel is right on the beach with the yoga studio above the sun terrace overlooking the sea. The food was excellent and plentiful and staff (Maria in particular) were great. We had a fantastic yoga teacher in Mohan - as a beginner I found him very easy to follow and his practice was incredibly focused. Although the program said there would be a free day, he held classes twice every single day and there was also the option for yogic sleep in the evenings and a silent meditation walk into the mountains one morning to see the sun rise. Thoroughly enjoyed the week and would wholeheartedly recommend it to everyone.", edited

"Just got back from my yoga retreat holiday at Grenadine Lodge. It was fantastic! The hotel is amazing, the staff is great, food is delicious - faultless! Diane's yoga was fabulous, my boyfriend had never done yoga before but attended every class. The meditation was peaceful and beautiful, she even took us up a mountain on the last day for one - it was very spiritual. Diane also helped us arrange trips with the Freespirit representatives who were also amazing. We will come again next year."

"I went on a one-week yoga retreat in Turkey at Dalyan starting at the end of May where the yoga was taught by Shamita Ray. She was absolutely excellent. Her teaching was in my view, truly inspirational. She was gentle, kind, and enormously encouraging. The way she taught technique was excellent - clear and enabling. I learned to do things I had never thought I would be capable of, but more than that, I felt better in body and mind at the end of the week than I had for years. She created a spirit of support and harmony within the group which was remarkable."

"I had a wonderful time on the yoga retreat organised by Free Spirit Travel, staying in Faralya, Turkey, doing yoga with Louise Gillespie-Smith. The hotel has a beautiful yoga space overlooking the sea, you can watch the sun set as you do yoga in the evening! The hotel itself is very well-presented. The rooms and pool are lovely, there is a nice chill-out area, the food is delicious and nutritious and the staff are very friendly and helpful. The retreat itself was very well organised, transfers were easy and several optional trips and activities were made available to us. Louise is an excellent teacher who really made this a very special week for all involved. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this yoga retreat to anyone!"

"I have recently returned from a wonderful week at Grenadine Lodge. I went there last year and had a great time but was a little apprehensive at returning in case my previous memories were too good to repeat. I was not disappointed - this holiday was even better. Grenadine Lodge is a great place to stay, so calm and tranquil and a wonderful place to practice yoga. "

"The staff at the lodge really are like family and take great care of your every need. I am not vegetarian but thoroughly enjoyed the lovely fresh food presented at breakfast and dinner."

"Many thanks to Bev, our yoga teacher, who pulled out all the stops to provide us with a variety of different yoga experiences. Every class was well prepared and tailored for each and every students level of competency, encouraging you to go that little bit deeper if you felt able to do so. "

"The meditation, music, and readings certainly took the yoga to another level and really made you think deeply on a much more personal level. Bev is very professional, friendly and approachable and I look forward to going on future retreats on which she teaches."

"Thank you Free Spirit for providing such a well-organised hassle free holiday. I'm looking forward to the next one!"

"I spent a week at Grenadine Lodge with Rachel Graham from August 10 - 17. I wanted to let you know that it was a wonderful week with a mix of yoga, Pilates, and dance. The fusion of styles suited me very well."

"I already participate in classes with Rachel at Brockwell Lido, so I am confident that she knows her stuff as a teacher. Spending the week with her, however, was a whole new experience. She was so considerate to all our differing needs and abilities and went beyond the norm to make our retreat memorable and fun. She is so generous in the amount of care and time she is willing to give."

"Grenadine Lodge and Dalyan was beautiful. So all in all, I had a fantastic time."

"I want to thank you for the wonderful holiday I had in Dalyan in August. It was my first trip to Turkey and the holiday was excellent. I loved Grenadine Lodge. The staff were friendly and efficient, the food was delicious, the room had everything I wanted (including plenty of storage space and coat hangers, and a safe at no extra charge) and the gardens, yoga and dance spaces, and tree house were delightful."

"Rachel Graham was a brilliant teacher. Not only she trained in yoga, Pilates, and dance but she is also very sensitive to the needs of individual participants and making classes fun for everyone, whether beginner or highly experienced. Likewise, she discreetly checked that each of us was having a good holiday and helped with sorting problems, but also she welded the group together when that was appropriate."

"I took advantage of all the trips. Boat trips are not usually my thing but Flipper-K was exceptionally clean and well-fitted and the crew kind and welcoming, so I enjoyed the 12 island trip very much. All in all, I came home wishing that I could have the whole holiday all over again, preferably with the same group of people!"

"I have just returned from a week at Grenadine Lodge, a yoga and Pilates week. What a wonderful place. A totally relaxing feel to it, as soon as I walked in I had a great feeling about the place. It has a special ambiance."

"Rachel, our teacher, makes the class such fun you dont feel its a class at all! Though she makes you work hard its in a very chilled out way. The studio has a great location with beautiful views, what a wonderful place to do yoga and Pilates in."

"The food was so delicious, and though I'm not really vegetarian, I thoroughly enjoyed the choice, at breakfast and dinner. All in all a wondeful week, and I was sad to leave. I do hope Rachel will be teaching next year at Grenadine Lodge, as I hope to return."

It really is a special place; the rooms very clean and comfortable, the beautiful pool and gardens, the friendly, helpful and discreet staff and the fresh food including wonderful mezes. "WOW, what a fabulous holiday we had. I am still on a high. I describe our retreat as one of the most beautiful experiences of my life so far, cocooned in a little retreat of love, positivity, and kindness. It was so lovely to meet you all! I tell everyone I meet about your fabulous yoga holidays, Jilly, and of course the legend that is Mr Sye! I have wonderful photos of you all on my phone and uploaded to Facebook. I am not sure how to email them though, I will find out!"

"Just want to share this beautiful moment on returning from India I went to my mum's to give my nieces and step daughter their gifts, Ruby looks beautiful in her Sari! They wanted to know all about India and what we did, I told them about the circle of love, where you all hold hands and send the person on your right all the love in the world! Amazing! "

"The energy was beautiful a little circle of innocent, eager little people wishing with all of their heart to send all of the love in the world to each other I don't think I have ever felt anything so powerful. I am going to use this within my work, it's such a simple yet beautiful thing to do! Thank you David! I hope this finds you all well and happy I send with it all my love. Namaste."

"It was one of the most exciting places I have ever visited. It was a great balance between learning yoga and experiencing some of India. The location is superb. The beach is beautiful as well as being a real working beach. One of my favorite mornings was watching the fishermen bring in the nets, singing, and cooperating as a whole group together."

"The staff was fantastic, right from the top down. Halen is a great manager. He was so quietly efficient, gentle, and kind. He organized the various trips we wanted as well as organizing us to go to see a temple celebration which was so different from any carnival I have ever seen. It was so full of color, music, elephants, and performers. It is something I will remember for life."

"The food provided was superb, exactly what I wanted. They were so obliging that when we asked for Dosers for breakfast they provided several days of tasty new Indian breakfasts. The staff went well beyond the call of duty. I would recommend it highly to my friends."

I enjoyed my stay in Kovalam; nice location, great yoga, and fabulous food! Yes, you were right, it was a real feast every day! The people were really nice and it was a pleasure to spend time chatting around the big table at breakfast or dinner. The Curry Leaf staff was amazingly nice. Halin is a very good manager, friendly, and relaxed. I would like to book for the February 2016 retreat with Liz. I hope you are well. All the best."

So remote and peaceful, surrounded by pine forests and the sea with gorgeous views everywhere, and Hassan couldn't be kinder, smilier, or more helpful.
