Yoga is not a philosophy. It is a practical science. Philosophy gives you knowledge. Yoga gives you experience. This is the beauty of yoga. That experience is a manifestation of your inner being.
Hatha yoga is recognized around the world today as a unique system for promoting the health and well-being of body and mind. The practices of Hatha yoga are an excellent kit for the prevention, management, and treatment of a very wide range of common ailments and diseases. Scientific research in yoga for health management is continuing and growing continuously. The revival of yoga in the 20th century brought Hatha yoga into society like never before.
The Satyananda yoga tradition has made a huge contribution to this sphere and has its foundation in the teachings of Swami Shivananda who was a doctor and a great guru. Swami Satyananda took the application of Hatha yoga for health to a higher level by increasing medical research aimed at the therapeutic value of the practices. This work began in 1960 at the Bihar School of Yoga and started with research into the effects of yoga on the heart and cardiovascular system with strong support from the Indian government.
After many years of studies, research, and experimental fields, after the beginning of the 80s, the Yoga Research Foundation was born within the Bihar School of Yoga, an organization formed by doctors and sannyasins from all over the world that will bring studies on the applications of yoga towards health, at a much higher level and recognition, particularly in some areas such as stress management, the respiratory system, the joint system, and others.
The main guiding goal of Hatha yoga is the need to balance and manage the flow of prana, your subtle and vital energy, that governs your body. The concept of prana is of vital importance in the yogic theory of health and disease which sees imbalance or blockage in the flow of prana as the fundamental cause of disease. Purification of the body is an important goal in Hatha yoga and is an important aspect of improving health.
Hatha yoga is the most comprehensive and understandable system for holistic health care, according to the words of Swami Niranjanananda today. Yoga is the process of seeking balance, it is not therapy. Yoga does not mean that an individual should not suffer from any kind of ailment. Yoga says that there can be suffering because it is a law of nature, but if the disease can be managed this is yoga.
From the traditional words of Swami Shivananda, health is a state of balance of the three humors of the body: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha (air, bile, and phlegm). When the mind and all the organs of the bodywork in harmony with each other, you experience peace, joy, and happiness and carry out the duties of life with ease and comfort. The caduceus, symbol of health, represents the balance of Ida and Pingala, the nadis, the flows of mental and physical energy in the human body.
The caduceus is used as a symbol of medicine and the adoption of this symbol is perfectly logical: medicine is based on the concept of balance and imbalance will be the cause of disease. The World Health Organization has defined the concept of health as physical, mental, spiritual, moral, emotional, and social. This happens when there is harmony on all levels and this means health. In Hindi (Sanskrit), the word health is 'swasthya'. 'Swa' means one's self, 'astha' means to be stable in something. The idea of 'swasthya', health, is contained in the yogic tradition. When you are stable in yourselves, you experience good health.
The concept of 'swasthya' health is not only physical and not only psychological, but it is also spiritual as well as the spiritual dimension of life. It is the root of your existence. If they look at a tree from below, you can see all the trunk, branches, leaves, flowers, and fruits. If you want to support the tree, what should you do? Do you think about the trunk or branches, leaves, flowers, or fruits or do you take care of the roots? If you take care of the roots, the tree will grow strong. If the roots of the tree are ignored, it does not matter if the tree is big and how old it is, at the first storm, it will collapse in an instant.
There is only one real cause that identifies each cause and it is really an imbalance. Be an ecological imbalance or belonging to a lifestyle, diet, mental or other, the main problem is the imbalance. Yoga has never seen any disease as something purely physical or psychological. The disorder has always been seen in the context of the entire human personality.
Swami Shivananda used to say that the mind is a great force on earth. The one who controls the mind is full of power. He can lead all minds under his influence. All diseases can be cured through psychic healing.
Yoga therapy works on the premise that the main practices of Hatha yoga such as shatkarma (detox purification practices), asanas, pranayama, relaxation, and other practices can regulate the production and proportion of hormones in your body including steroids, beautifully rebalancing the autonomic nervous system which will reflect its effects on the central control structures of your brain.
If you want radiant health, you should go back to nature and make use of all the healing agents of nature, the healing properties of the sun, water, air, earth, and the benefits of fasting and herbs. Nature tries to keep you healthy. You cause disease by continually violating its laws. The laws of nature are relentless and know no mercy. Therefore, you should observe natural laws and eat, drink, sleep, think, and behave in the manner established by the ancient sages.
In the animal kingdom, there is rarely any disease because animals do not violate the laws of nature. Before the age of machines, life was more natural. Past generations were much stronger and healthier. Life in the twentieth century is becoming more and more artificial. There is a lot of deterioration in health and strength. Despite countless doctors and the latest medical breakthroughs, people's health is deteriorating.
