Sofía García, the founder of The Yoga Camp, has created the best possible learning environment and process. She knows and understands that it takes a lot of time, determination and hard work to learn a language well, so she teaches the basics to interact with the friendly people of Las Terrenas. Learning a language is about interacting, growing in your confidence, and be able to communicate.

The Dominican Republic is the perfect place for getting in touch with nature. There’s a wide variety of possibilities, like nature reserves, virgin beaches, forests, and waterfalls, giving way to ecotourism in its multiple forms. The Yoga Camp’s partners will arrange excursions to some of the most beautiful places in the Dominican Republic. Some of which are Los Haitises National Park, El Salto del Limón Waterfall, and Las Galeras.

Los Haitises National Park, located near Las Terrenas, was established in 1976. It consists of a limestone karst plateau with conical hills, sinkholes, and caverns. There is a large area of mangrove forest on the coast.

The park contains a number of different habitats and consequently has a great diversity of mammals and birds, including some rare species endemic to the island. Some of the caverns contain pictograms and petroglyphs. The park has become a popular ecotourism destination but the number of tourists allowed to visit is limited.

El Salto del Limón Waterfall is considered the most beautiful waterfall in the Dominican Republic and by many in the Caribbean. Standing at 131-feet tall, once you are in its presence, it’ll take your breath away. This excursion begins with a light horseback ride at the edges of the Limon river through La Ruta del Café nature trail.

During the ride, you will see various gorgeous waterfalls and the tropical rainforest vegetation which surrounds this beautiful path. Once you reach El Salto del Limón Waterfall, take a dip in its refreshing waters, take in the scenery, and enjoy a truly unforgettable day.

Las Galeras is a small fishing community northeast of the Samaná Peninsula, about an hour and a half drive from Las Terrenas. This village is truly a little piece of paradise. One of the great pleasures of visiting this amazing destination is losing all perspective on the world beyond while relaxing in one of the beautiful and isolated outlying beaches. Las Galeras offers many land and water-based activities for those who will ignore the temptation to do nothing more than lie around, eating, or enjoying a cocktail.

The town’s laid-back charms have not gone unnoticed, drawing a cosmopolitan mix of European and North American visitors who make it a more eclectic global village than other more touristy spots on the peninsula. Also, it’s one of the few independent-traveler-minded locales in the Dominican Republic as there’s barely an all-inclusive resort in sight.

Kitesurfing

The beaches in Las Terrenas are crystal clear and shallow, which are just perfect for kitesurfing. The two main spots for kitesurfing in Las Terrenas are Playa El Portillo and Punta Popy, both worldwide famous. The beautiful tropical environment of Las Terrenas has one of the nicest windy aquamarine waters of the world. The Yoga Camp’s partners offer an all-inclusive service where you can take lessons from professional instructors, surf with the newest gear, and be a part of their beach club community.

Scuba diving

Scuba diving is now one of the most popular recreational water sports in the world as shown by the increasing numbers of enthusiasts, scuba diving sites, and companies selling scuba diving equipment. That’s why some great scuba diving activities are offered.

Right next to Las Terrenas, about an hour of drive, you’ll find the Samaná Bay, a very popular dive site with exotic underwater flora and fauna as well as beautiful turquoise waters and coral reefs. Warm water and generally good visibility make most of the Dominican Republic a year-round destination for scuba diving.

Whale watching

From January 15th to March 31st, you’ll have the unique opportunity to observe humpback whales in their natural calving and mating grounds in Samaná Bay. The town of Samaná is just an hour’s drive from Las Terrenas. There, you’ll find the main dock where the whale watching trip begins.

Listen to the male humpback’s solitary courting song and witness incredible displays of flipping, tail lobbing, and breaching by the most active species of whale in the Atlantic, which are more than 30 meters long and weight around 50 tons.

Ziplining

There’s a zip line complex located in the mountains between Samaná and El Valle in the north coast of the Dominican Republic, near Las Terrenas. From what looks like a wrecked ship atop the tallest mountain in the area, you begin your downfall voyage by walking the plank. Reaching speeds of up to 40 miles per hour, you crisscross from platform to platform with breathtaking views.

There are 12 lines and 13 stations. The longest line boasts of being over 1200-feet long and 450 high. That is almost a 45-story office building. The owner hired German engineers and spared no expense in building what may be the single best zipline in all the Caribbean. Their local trained guides will make it an amazing and safe experience. Samaná Zipline is nestled in the heart of nature.
