Hébergement

The accommodation options are for single or double occupancy. A single guest may choose to share a room with another guest of the same gender or occupy a room privately. Two guests traveling together may occupy a room privately.

Each guest room includes two twin beds, heat, air conditioning, towels, and bedding. A limited number of queen-sized beds are available. King conversions are available for an extra charge upon request. Fresh linens and towels are available weekly with no daily maid service. Wi-Fi is available for all guests. Guests who stay in a tent or RV have access to free Wi-Fi in Serenity Lounge as the Wi-Fi does not extend to all tent or RV sites. The Expanding Light Retreat has a computer lounge with two computers and a printer. Please be aware that the Expanding Light has limited handicap accessibility.

Private and shared DELUXE rooms

Harmony house

Each room has a private entrance, a private bathroom, air conditioning, a ceiling fan, and a hairdryer.

Private and shared STANDARD rooms

Cabins

Each cabin has one room, which is larger and more private than other standard rooms. Cabin occupants share separate men's and women's shower houses a few paces away and the path is lit after dark.

Serenity house

Serenity house is an inn-style house with twelve rooms and four hall bathrooms. Serenity House lounge is available for all guests. It is equipped with a small refrigerator for personal items, hot tea and a microwave.

RVs and tents

The Expanding Light Retreat does not provide tents or RVs. Please bring your own camping gear and be sure that tents are water tight in the case that it may rain. RVs are welcome year round, however, the property does not have RV facilities or hookups.

Tent spaces do not include facilities for cooking or picnicking. There is a high fire danger in the summer so no campfires are allowed, as well as candles, kerosene lamps, or anything with an open flame.

Because of animals, no food is allowed in the tenting area. The Expanding Light Retreat has a refrigerator behind the main kitchen which is available for guests.

Shower houses

For those staying outdoors, guests have access to separate men and women shower houses. Facilities have flush toilets, plenty of hot water, and shower and toilet partitions for your comfort and privacy.

Professeurs

Maitri Jones
Maitri’s name means “friend” in Sanskrit and well describes her kind and supportive nature. She is a calm, high-energy person who approaches her many interests with enthusiasm and talent. Maitri was drawn to doing yoga postures and living a yogic lifestyle in the early 70’s. A certified meditation teacher, yoga teacher and AIYT certified yoga therapy teacher. Maitri's special interest is yoga therapy for body, mind and spirit. With another nurse, Maitri created the successful MS study at The Expanding Light, for which she created a video of energization exercises and yoga postures for MS.
Barbara Bingham
Barbara is a Hatha yoga teacher, a registered physical therapist, and a former gymnast. She brings all of her training together in her yoga teaching and helps people enjoy using their bodies in the healthiest way possible. Barbara teaches the anatomy and physiology classes of the Ananda yoga teacher training and can show clients and students how to adjust yoga movements to their particular limitations, whatever those might be. Known for her playful, approachable style, Barbara also brings compassion and sensitive awareness to her yoga teaching.
Gyandev McCord
Yoga Alliance E-RYT 500 (Yoga)
Combining a fun-loving spirit, keen insight into the spiritual life, and genuine warmth, Nayaswami Gyandev makes the inner quest seem both natural and doable. Since 1983, he has taught Ananda Yoga to thousands of students and trained hundreds of teachers around the world, often forging deep and lasting bonds of friendship and inspiration. Gyandev’s devotion to sharing wisdom shows through the many resources he develops, like online newspapers and forums, videos, and new courses to help students deepen their experience of yoga, and give teachers more tools, and insights for their own classes.
Diksha McCord
Yoga Alliance E-RYT 500 (Yoga)
Nayaswami Diksha has been a popular Expanding Light teacher since 1997 as well as the director of the meditation teacher training program. She is a native Israeli who came to the U.S. in 1990 and is a powerful and dynamic woman who has shared yoga postures and yogic teachings across the United States, Canada, and Europe. She teaches many different courses at The Expanding Light. Diksha is also an outstanding chef and very knowledgeable about the yogic diet and Ayurveda, an Indian system of natural health and healing.
Melody Hanson
Yoga Alliance E-RYT 500 (Restorative Yoga)
Melody has been living as a yoga teacher since she was very young. She became a certified teacher in Ananda Yoga and Meditation in 2006. One of the main instructors for the Ananda Yoga Teacher Training program, Melody is registered at the highest level through Yoga Alliance, and she also teaches Restorative and Prenatal yoga. Melody is also a dancer who finds great joy in practicing the movement of yoga and guiding the beginner through advanced students into the stillness of meditation that follows yoga. Melody’s loving nature shines through her ability to take care of all of her.

Repas

Three delicious and satisfying vegetarian buffet meals are included with the cost of your stay. Some of the dishes contain eggs and dairy. The Expanding Light uses organically grown foods as much as possible, including some organically grown eggs and produce from right here at Ananda Village, and organically grown Fair Trade coffee. They have a variety of teas and fresh fruit available all day.

Computer lounge and Wi-Fi

Guests are welcome to use the computer lounge in the main building; guests in deluxe room and most of the standard rooms can use Wi-Fi in their rooms if you bring your own computer.

Guest services lounge

The guest services lounge is a lovely room with a cozy fireplace located in the Gust Services Building. When not in use for a class, it is open until late at night for guests to use.

Lahiri Mandir

This is a small chapel on the path to Lotus Lake. A sacred space ideal for meditation, Lahiri is open all the time for quiet reflection and meditation.

Lotus Lake

This lovely lake is filled with water lilies and lotus flowers in summer. It is a beautiful area ideal for walks, where you can often see wild birds. A path around the lake includes outdoor altars to Ananda Yoga's line of masters.

Personal services

Personal services at The Expanding Light at additional cost, including spiritual counseling, private yoga sessions, and private yoga therapy sessions.

Serenity lounge

Serenity Lounge is a homey room located in the Serenity Building. When not in use for class, it is open to guests for relaxation, reading, yoga, meditation, watching videos, listening to music, or just socializing. Serenity lounge is also stocked with tea and coffee, and equipped with a small refrigerator, microwave, and electric teapot for guest use.

The Temple

This temple, located just off the dining room, is a beautiful space in which they hold daily practice of yoga postures and meditation, as well classes and evening programs. When not in use for a scheduled class or event, it is open for meditation and Hatha yoga.

Walking

You can take long walks on the beautiful 800 acres of forest and meadowland.

Soins et massages

Massage can be a wonderful, healing addition to your stay. All massage practitioners are Ananda members and work through the Center for Radiant Health. The center offers a variety of types of massage, as well as Ayurveda counseling, CranioSacral therapy, astrological readings, and more. They have a coin-operated washer and dryer available for guest use. It is not a typical Spa facility as there are no pool facilities to enjoy.

  • Take I-80 (E) towards Reno - go about 25 miles.
  • At Auburn, turn left on CA-49 (N) toward Grass Valley / Nevada City - go 38 miles.
  • Just past Nevada City, turn left at the "49 to Downieville" sign. Follow this road for 10.5 miles (watch your odometer). It is a curving mountain road that crosses the Yuba River.
  • Turn right on Tyler-Foote Road (immediately after the sign for Malakoff Diggins State Park) - go about 5 miles.
  • Turn left on Ananda Way and left again (almost immediately) on Expanding Light Way.

Driving directions from Reno

  • Take I-80 (W) towards Sacramento - go 55 miles.
  • Take CA-20 (W) - go 27 miles.
  • Turn right on CA-49 (N) towards Downieville - go 10.5 miles.
  • Turn right on Tyler-Foote Road (immediately after the sign for Malakoff Diggins State Park) - go about 5 miles.
  • Turn left on Ananda Way and left again (almost immediately) on Expanding Light Way.

Driving directions from the northwest

  • Take I-5 (S) to Williams, California.
  • Take CA-20 (E) to Nevada City - go 77 miles.
  • Turn left on CA-49 (N) towards Downieville - go 10.5 miles.
  • Turn right on Tyler-Foote Road (immediately after the sign for Malakoff Diggins State Park) - go about 5 miles.
  • Turn left on Ananda Way and left again (almost immediately) on Expanding Light Way.

Arrival by airplane

The best airport to fly into is Sacramento International Airport (SMF). Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO) is also an option but is less preferable due to inclement weather in the winter and higher transportation costs to Ananda. From the Sacramento Airport, there are a few options.

For a good value, they recommend The Expanding Lights regularly scheduled Sacramento airport pick-up and drop-off.

For more flexibility around days and times for pick-up and drop-off, a good option is Foothill Shuttle and Charter Service.

Yet other options are taking the Super Shuttle, renting a car and follow the directions, or taking the bus, train, or public transportation.

Arrival by bus

Greyhound bus offers service from available cities to Colfax, approximately an hour from Ananda. To get to Ananda from Colfax, you will need to take a cab or Foothill Shuttle and Charter Service.

Amtrak offers limited bus service from available cities into Colfax (if coming from the east) and Auburn (if coming from the west), each about an hour from Ananda. To get to Ananda from Colfax, you will need to take a cab or Foothill Shuttle and Charter Service.

Arrival by shuttle

The Expanding Light recommends Foothill Shuttle and Charter Service. They are a locally run shuttle with excellent service. The cost (subject to change) from Sacramento Airport to The Expanding Light, it is 250 USD round trip, and 150 USD one way. From Colfax or Auburn, it is 160 USD round trip, and 80 USD one way.

You may take the Super Shuttle (advance reservations required). When making your reservation, put your destination as "Expanding Light" to get the accurate price. The cost (subject to change) from Sacramento Airport to The Expanding Light is 175 USD one way, and 350 USD for round trip. If you are part of a group, there is an additional fee of only 9 USD per person for the ride.

Arrival by train

  • Amtrak train offers train service from available cities into Colfax (if coming from the east) and Auburn (if coming from the west), each about an hour from Ananda.
