When you are ready to rest, Kalani offers breezy, outside-in accommodations to suit your preference and budget. Their rustic guest spaces offer comfort and tranquility in a tropical setting. If you are seeking simplicity, your needs are met here. Kalani's environment is ideal to unplug from technology and allow nature to recharge your spirit. With a temperate climate year-round and east-west trade winds, Kalani accommodations do not need to be equipped with heating or air-conditioning.

Screened-in windows maximize airflow and views, offering you a breath of the planet's freshest air. There are no phones or televisions in our minimalist rooms, allowing you to declutter your mind and start anew. Accommodation types vary from bamboo cottages which can sleep up to three people, lofts with two private bedrooms and a shared space, tree-house rooms located under the cool shade of a large monkeypod tree, free-standing bungalows, and two hall lodges.

Daily schedule

Arrival day

  • 18:30 Dinner and group welcome

Typical day

  • 06:00 Silent meditation walk and oceanside meditation and/or gentle morning yoga, pranayama, and chanting
  • 07:30 Breakfast
  • 08:30 Program in session and asana practice
  • 12:30 Lunch and break
  • 14:30 Yoga Nidra and program in session
  • 18:00 Dinner
  • 19:00 Evening workshops are scheduled periodically throughout the program and students may be assigned to them, outside of class group work, readings, or presentations.

Departure day

Three full days off will be scheduled during the program to rest, explore the island, or catch up on your studies.

Liz Heffernan, E-RYT 500, C-IAYT is an international yoga teacher and Integrative Yoga Therapist. She draws from over two decades of personal yoga practice, 22 years of teaching and extensive training in the Hatha yoga systems of Kripalu, Ashtanga, and Anusara. She currently directs and leads Yoga teacher trainings and workshops worldwide, provides unique one-to-one mentoring for yoga teachers, instructs daily yoga classes and offers private therapeutic sessions. Additionally, Liz serves as a mentor/faculty for the Kripalu School of Integrative Yoga Therapy Professional Yoga Therapy program.
Molly Masaoka
Yoga Alliance E-RYT 500 (Yoga)
Innately perceptive beyond her years and wildly passionate about everything in her path, Molly applies a level of determination and delight that is truly one of a kind. Her unique teaching style is both intense and focused but lightened with creativity, compassion, and humor. She believes that this balance of effort and surrender is the key to unlocking the awareness of one's true nature. A student of yoga since the age of 16, Molly has studied intensely with Chuck Miller and completed teacher training with Annie Carpenter and Don Stapelton.
Amanda Webster
Yoga Alliance E-RYT 200 (Ayurveda Yoga)
Amanda Webster is a registered yoga teacher and Certified Ayurveda Counselor, through the American Institute of Vedic Studies. Amanda found her calling as a yoga teacher and Ayurveda-based lifestyle counselor over five years ago. She currently offers Ayurveda-infused yoga classes, workshops, and retreats as well as facilitates teacher trainings that focus on establishing commitment to the lifestyle practices of yoga and Ayurveda, creating an open and supportive community, and studying mindfulness in its many forms. Amanda considers Kripalu-trained yogini Rupali Embry as her “true teacher”.

Here, on the east coast of Hawaii Island, you will spend your time enjoying majestic natural attractions and taking advantage of all Kalani Retreat offers. The retreat center is located on 120 magnificent acres of tropical beauty on the southeast coast of Hawaii Island, known as the Big Island. Ample opportunities exist to enjoy Kalani's grounds which includes a pool, hot tub, and watsu therapy pool, or stroll along the coastline taking in its stunning views.

One of Kalani's guiding principles is to preserve and enhance its pristine, 120-acre campus, and surrounding Puna district through sustainable education programs and hands-on community participation. To that end, Kalani has become a living model for discovering, and implementing best practices in permaculture, sustainability, and community development in a breathtaking tropical oasis. Shared rides and excursions are organized so students do not have to rent a car.

The price of this retreat includes three delicious daily meals. Kalanis dining lanai and kitchen have long been described as the heart of Kalani. As many as two hundred-fifty guests, local residents, staff, and volunteers file in line each day for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Kalani cuisine encompasses a variety of styles including Thai, Indian, and Italian. Their chefs have extensive training and a common interest in creating healthy and delicious meals. They celebrate the abundance of Hawaii by serving local tropical fruit and vegetables and freshly caught fish. Seafood is often served at dinner, with chicken and beef being served occasionally, and vegetarian options are provided as well.

Comment se rendre sur place ?

Driving directions from Hilo International Airport (ITO)

  • Leaving the Hilo Airport, turn left at traffic light onto Kanoelehua Avenue or Highway 11 south.
  • Continue on Highway 11 until you are out of town (about 5.9 miles).
  • Turn left onto Kea'au Pahoa Bypass Road or Highway 130 south and continue for 21 miles passing Pahoa.
  • After mile-marker 20 there is a left-hand turn lane shortly after a large sign which says End of Road - 1 mile.
  • This important left turn is passed a green church and insight of the ocean. A sign will direct you either to Kalapana or End of Road.
  • Turn left towards Kalapana, then curve right.
  • Follow this short road to a stop sign at a T-junction and turn left onto Kalapana-Kapoho Road/ Coastal Highway 137.
  • After about 5 miles, between the 17 and 18 mile-markers, and a half-mile beyond Kalapana Sea View Estates, Kalani will be on your left, marked with a lighted entrance sign.

Arrival by airplane

Please book your flight to arrive at Hilo International Airport (ITO). Transfer from and to the airport is available upon request for 50 USD per person if more than one guest is arriving at a time or 75 USD for a single pick-up or drop-off. Guest services at Kalani Oceanside Retreat will coordinate the shuttle for you and will combine rides whenever possible to keep the cost down for the guests.

Arrival by taxi

Taxis and uber are also available on the island.
