During this training you will stay either in a shared or a private room. Shambhava Yoga Konalani has options for all budgets and preferences. The cabanas and tents have access to the outdoor shower facility.

Cabanas

Nestled in the back of the mango orchard, the cabanas combine the outdoor experience of Hawaii with the indoor comforts of aloha.

Cabin tents

Located about 50 yards from the main house, these straight walled cabin tents are a fun way to experience the outdoors in style. On raised platforms, with 140 square feet of interior space and over six feet of head room, you won’t feel like you’re living in a tent. The tents have memory foam cots, dressers, a table, sheets, towels, and pillows. They are located about 100 yards from the main house.

Main house bedrooms

Sleeping at the main house is the most convenient option. It allows you to run back to your room without a worry or go to the bathroom during mid-night without a missed step. The house has shared bathrooms.

This yoga teacher training is the beginning of the journey of using your asana practice to re-align your body and mind. To become a skillful teacher, you have to learn about your own body first, your personal practice is the foundation. That’s why your 200-hour yoga teacher training thoroughly introduces workshops and adjusts you in all 45 foundational level one poses making you a teacher worth following.

The foundation of all movement starts with the core. The core can be an overwhelming concept, but learning to use your core in asana practice is just a matter of practice. Coordinating your stretch with an active core (core-dination) requires proper instruction, focus, and repetition.

Curriculum

By utilizing multiple teaching modalities and skillfully integrating advanced technology into the classroom, they are re-defining what is possible to achieve in a three-week training course. Every day will begin and ends with a 30-minute guided meditation practice. Meditation is at the heart of the lineage and they strive to bring it into everything they do. There are also weekly satsangs with Sri Shambhavananda to ask questions you may have about your spiritual practice.

You will learn how to stretch, breathe, and work in each of the 42 fundamental asanas of beginning yoga through hands-on workshops and personal attention from your instructor. Each day will be focused on a new family of asanas, which you will study in the evening and practice teach in following morning. You will practice to teach fellow students every single day of your teacher training.

Accompanying every asana section is the anatomy relating to those asanas, ensuring that your understanding of anatomy will always be rooted in a genuine physical experience. You will create a full body warm up based on anatomical principles and creative movements. You will have the opportunity to practice teach this warm up multiple times, as well as receive personalized feedback from your course instructors on how to refine and improve it.

You will learn how to properly practice and teach five powerful pranayama (breathing) exercises that will strengthen your ability to breathe fully and deeply, as well as connect your awareness to the pranic energy within the breath. Your training leaders will instruct you in the three primary meditation practices of the Shambhava tradition; heart, mantra, and breath-based meditation.

Each day you will also participate in a 30-minutes Karma yoga session with selfless service. This practice will help you to bridge the gap between the meditation cushion and your life. You will also do sacred arts and crafts projects that bring the teachings to life in fun and practical ways.

The second half of your training will motivate you to reach deeper inside with exercises and techniques that will help you to teach from inside, which is one of the most fundamental characteristics of the Shambhava tradition.

You will learn the art of sequencing known as Vinyasa and you will also receive insightful worksheets that will teach you the internal structure of class planning to accelerate your potential as a professional teacher.

The second half of your training will also open the door to physical and verbal adjustments, teaching off the mat, improvisational teaching, Ayurveda, in-depth philosophy discussions, and more. You will leave with six classes that are ready to be taught immediately.

Materials and resources

Your official training manual is a life-long learning resource. With comprehensive explanations of all the postures, anatomy, Sanskrit, and Ayurveda. You will be utilizing this 300-page full-color manual as a resource for years after your training is complete.

This will not be an average lecture. Your teachers utilize interactive on-screen presentations with wireless technology, allowing them to move more freely through the classroom and interact readily with students. The materials are colorful, engaging, and most importantly, comprehensible for all learning styles.

Your asana workshops are documented and shared with you daily via a private cloud storage system that allows you to reflect on your personal alignment in each pose as you study that evening.

Accompanying the interactive on-screen lectures is a presentation manual with all of the slides and information presented. You will be encouraged to write, draw, and take notes all over the book. This manual also includes refined worksheets that simplify complex class planning strategies and make you a great teacher in no time.

Meditation and philosophy

The goals of meditation will not be finished in this three-week training, these goals are a lifelong pursuit. The goal is to help you establish a regular and whole-hearted meditation practice that you will continue to cultivate at home, in your daily life, and as a yoga teacher. “Big Picture Hatha Yoga” is just one part of the ancient system of yoga that has been practiced for thousands of years.

In Hatha yoga, you will practice physical postures with yogic discipline to surrender or deeply release mental, emotional, and physical tensions. Hatha yoga is the foundation for the deeper practice of meditation. Your Hatha yoga practice will help to open you physically and energetically, allowing for a rich meditation experience, which was its original intention.

For 30 minutes each day, you will sit for meditation in the morning and for another 30 minutes in the evening. You will have the opportunity to practice many forms of yoga and meditation during your training like Sanskrit chanting, breathe awareness techniques, mantra repetition, devotional chanting, visualization, self-reflection, and others.

The practices of the Shambhava tradition are not meant for a cave, isolated from everyday life. What you learn on the meditation cushion will give you tools to work with your mind, open your heart, and surrender tensions and emotions so you can move skillfully through your life, teach from a place of real depth, and grow.

Sample daily schedule

  • 05:30 Yoga, chanting, and meditation. Each day begins with light stretching, sometimes practice teaching time, Sanskrit chanting (as the training progresses), and meditation.
  • 07:00 Breakfast. You will enjoy coffee as well as eggs, pancakes, croissants, fruits, nuts, yogurts, granola, and more.
  • 07:45 Seva (selfless service). Selfless service is an amazing way to deepen your practice. It’s also a chance to give back to the ashram. Activities range from cleaning, to weeding, and to chopping wood.
  • 08:30 Hatha yoga (three days per week). This is time to practice what you are learning with a 90-minute Hatha yoga, pranayama, a little meditation, and of course savasana.
  • 10:30 Workshop topics and asanas. A few hours to go over new material and introduce the day’s topics.
  • 12:30 Lunch. Vegetarian meals cooked from the heart.
  • 13:15 Break. Caravan to the beach for a plunge.
  • 14:30 Workshop topics and asanas. Working into the asanas, asking questions, getting feedback, and practice teaching.
  • 16:00 Philosophy. The study and discussion of various meditation and pranayama practices in the shrine.
  • 17:00 Meditation. Guided meditation in the Shambhava tradition from faculty instructors.
  • 17:30 Dinner. A delicious vegetarian home cooked meal
  • 21:00 Closing time. You don’t have to go to bed but you will probably want to.
  • Each day after lunch you have the opportunity to enjoy some free time and you will also have two full days off during your training.

Group trips to the beach are included in this training.

    Abhaya is a 500-hour registered yoga teacher. She is an exuberant and gifted teacher. Meditation completely changed her life and after graduating Magna cum Laude from Georgetown University, she moved into the Shambhava Yoga Ashram to deepen her practice. She excelled in her Shambhava yoga teacher training and even began teaching trainings at the ashram within just a year of her graduation.

    Yoga Alliance RYT 500 (Hatha Yoga)

    Satyam is a 500-hour registered yoga teacher. He teaches with passion, dedication, and a sense of humor. He found Hatha yoga to be a tremendous and life-changing gift for the scoliosis of his spine and spinning wheels of his mind. After graduating with honors from Depaul University in 2005, he moved into the Shambhava Yoga Ashram and since then, he has dedicated his life to living and working there. His teaching style incorporates unique work-books, on-screen presentations, and iPad applications in an effort to make the training accessible to all learning modalities.

    Yoga Alliance RYT 500 (Yoga)

    Casey is a 500-hour registered yoga teacher. She is an adventurous spirit and committed yoga practitioner. Originally from New York, she graduated from Marist College and explored social work, marketing, event planning, and entrepreneurship before completing her teacher training at Konalani. Within just one month of her graduation she was already teaching 12 classes a week. When she’s not teaching yoga or meditating at the ashram you can find her hiking, paddle boarding, or surfing around the island.

This training will be held at Shambhava Yoga Konalani Ashram in Big Island, Hawaii. The ashram is located on the Kona side of the Big Island of Hawaii, about 10 minutes south of downtown surrounded by five lush acres of aloha just minutes from the ocean.

During this training you will be served three daily delicious vegetarian meals. Shambhava Yoga Konalani cooks and serves with love healthy vegetarian meals everyday of your training utilizing delicious recipes directly from their own cookbooks.

During your free time, you may explore the cliffs and valleys to the north, volcanoes to the South, beaches to the west, and waterfalls to the east. You may rent a car to explore the Big Island, driving north to check out the world famous beaches and stopping for dinner and shopping at the Queens marketplace on your way back. Renting kayaks and snorkeling in Kealakekua Bay where the dolphins like to swim is also an option.

You can of course choose to stay close to the ashram and shop and stroll through historic Kona Town. The ashram is also near from the historic downtown, with excellent shopping, restaurants, and activities.

Further north, are the world famous white sand beaches, some more hidden than others. Far to the north are rugged cliffs and valleys. To the east is Hilo, filled with waterfalls and lush rainforest vegetation. And finally to the south, you may visit the active volcano, Kilauea.
