This retreat will take place in the Farmhouse of the Palms, in Algarve, Portugal. It is situated on a hill named Cerro do Botelho and surrounded by a stunning garden. The area offers stunning views over the area, including the nearby city of São Brás de Alportel. The air is still pure and clean. It is also away from the tourist crowds and allows you to discover the authentic Algarve region, with its little villages where life is every bit as easygoing as it was 50 years ago.
The farmhouse is conveniently located just five minutes away from São Brás de Alportel and 10 minutes away from Loule, both towns being very traditional with beautiful historical centers.
During this retreat, you will be served three daily meals with snacks. A personal chef will prepare all meals using healthy and local produce. Water, tea, juices, and smoothies will also be available for you.
Alte is yet another village with whitewashed houses, Moorish chimneys, and cobblestone streets decorated with flowers. Below Alte are two springs (Fonte Pequene and Fonte Grande), both worth a visit.
To the south and east of Faro are five islands that are part of the Rio Formosa nature reserve. Most of these islands are only accessible by boat or ferry from Faro, Olhão, or Tavira. Two exceptions are Ilha de Faro, accessible via a bridge, and Ilha de Tavira (Praia do Barril), accessible by a charming train. The beaches are stunning, wide, and long, and offer plenty of space even during peak season.
In the west of Faro are the beaches of Vale de Lobo and Quinta do Lago. Ancoa, and especially Garrão Poente and Garrão Nascente which are highly recommended. Farther west are two beautiful beaches that certainly deserve a mention, Praia Falesia (Albufeira, known for its impressive red rock formations) and Praia Marinha (Benagil, possibly the most picturesque beach in the Algarve Region).
Until the middle of the last century, São Brás de Alportel was the cork capital of Portugal and, by extension, the entire world. About 54% of the world’s cork is produced in Portugal. High-quality cork requires a clean environment and clean air. São Brás de Alportel and its environment are well known for these traits. Even today, the old merchant houses in the town stand testament to the impact of this economic activity.
The cork route (Rota da Cortiça) is the perfect way to learn more about the noble cork oak (sobreiro in Portuguese), the art of debarking and the fascinating features of this 100% natural raw material that is so much more than just a stopper in a wine bottle. It is no coincidence that the cork oak is protected in Portugal. Along the route, you can visit Nova Cortiça, a cork processing plant whose cork ultimately ends up in the champagne bottles of the large houses in France.
The varied landscape offers a range of possibilities for cycling enthusiasts. From the reasonably flat coastal strip with orange and olive groves, to small paths in the hills of the Serra. North of São Brás de Alportel is where a cyclist’s dream truly unfolds, long roads, across hills, and through valleys with little to no traffic. Even though the hills are not all that high, there are plenty of steep stretches that should satisfy even the most demanding cyclist.
The various routes are available via GPS coordinates, and feature descriptions or photos. The local bicycle rental Farmhouse of the Palms works with brings the bicycles to the house and also picks them up again. The bicycle rental has various types of bicycles available, ranging from touring bikes to mountain bikes and racing bikes, and can provide cyclists with mapped GPS routes.
This sleeping beauty lies adjacent to the lagoons of the Ria Formosa. The maze of narrow streets and alleys in the old town (Vila Adentro) takes one back to the Moorish occupation between 700 and 1200. The old town is a veritable oasis of tranquility. The rich houses with their quatro aguas roofs are plentiful, and the cathedral (Sé) towers above it all.
The old Moorish district, with its pedestrian streets and many shops, is adjacent to Vila Adentro. In the distance, lies Ilha de Faro (the beach of Faro), accessible by boat or by car via a small bridge. This island and beach is mainly frequented by the Portuguese. The slightly run-down cottages reflect the Portuguese saudade.
Algarve is Europe’s golf paradise. The following golf courses can be found in the São Brás de Alportel area. In Vale do Lobo you can find Ocean Course and Royal Golf Course, both 18 holes. The Royal Golf Course is one of the most well-known courses in the world. It owes its popularity to the famous hole 16, with its 200-metre shot over the cliffs.
In Quinta do Lago, you can find Pinheiros Altos Golf Course, in and around Vilamoura, you can find Vilamoura Old Course, Millennium Golf Course, and Pinhal Golf Course, and near Tavira, you can find Quinta da Ria and Benamor Golf Course.
Loulé is located 16 kilometers northwest of Faro and only seven kilometers from the farmhouse. The main attraction is the market hall, dating from 1908, with the Arab arch windows where the locals do their shopping. Every Saturday, there is a market in the surrounding streets with local produce from the rural Algarve.
Querenca is mainly known for its photogenic square, with the magnificent church at its center, surrounded by beautiful tiles. There also whitewashed houses featuring a typically Moorish chimney. Near Querenca, lies the Benemola nature reserve, which makes for a nice walk to Fonte Benemola.
There are a surprising number of excellent restaurants in the area, you can try the delight of exploring the excellent cuisines served in each restaurant.
A small village with remains of an old Moorish castle. You can enjoy many stunning views over the serra from Salir. Between Salir and Alte, lies Rocha da Pena (Rock of Sorrow), an impressive slope hill 479 metres tall. A five-kilometer hiking trail starts in the village of Rocha and takes you to the top of the hill. Along the way you can enjoy the rich flora and fauna.
Silves is the former capital of Algarve. Thanks to its inland location, Silves has largely remained authentic to this day. The cobbled and sloped streets lined with whitewashed houses make for lovely strolling. In the early afternoon, the town is nearly deserted, and you will have the streets to yourself. Below the town, the Arada river meanders past.
Under Moorish rule, it was said that Silves surpassed Lisbon in beauty and was given the name ‘Baghdad of the West’. Nowadays, little of that time remains, except for the red castle towering over the town. From the castle, you can enjoy some magnificent views over Silves and the surrounding area.
Tavira is the former capital of Algarve, and undoubtedly one of the most beautiful towns in the region. The beach is only accessible by ferry, which is the reason that Tavira has mostly been able to maintain its authenticity, despite the fact that it is a coastal town.
There are no high-rises, no resorts, only pleasant little streets, old houses with the typical “quatro aguas” roofs, the many churches and nice restaurants, as well as the famous Roman bridge over the Gilao river. Tavira is an excellent place to wander and explore, for having a nice cup of coffee on a terrace and simply observe life.
The São Brás de Alportel region (between the coast and Serra) lends itself to various walks. From walks in the Rio Formosa, a unique nature reserve featuring approximately 18,000 hectares of lagoons and a wealth of flora and fauna, to walks in the hills north of Sao Bras, amid cork and olive groves, along small roads, through picturesque villages, the authentic Algarve region where people live and enjoy what nature gives them. There are various marked trails in the region.
For more adventurous travelers, there is the Via Algarviana, a trail more than 300 kilometers long that crosses the Algarve region from east (Alcoutim) to west (Cabo Sao Vicente) and runs through São Brás de Alportel. The Via Algarviana takes hikers through the Barrocal and the Serra, across rivers and hills, along old windmills, springs, and chapels that all accentuate the archaeological and historical riches of this region.
