Satsanga Retreat is family-run retreat center and guesthouse with a friendly staff mostly employed from the local village. It is located in the village of Verla Canca, between Anjuna Beach and Mapusa in Goa, India. Satsanga Retreat, which many guests say feels like a home-away-from-home, provides a relaxed, intimate community setting.
The center features two beautiful yoga shalas with wood flooring, swimming pool, and tropical gardens for gathering as a group or relaxing solo. They have 15 warmly furnished guest rooms, all with private bathrooms and solar hot water, mosquito nets, and ceiling fans. Bed linen and towels are included as well.

This retreat includes full board meals with delicious vegetarian food, three buffet-style meals, and one snack per day. Herbal tea, filtered water, and fruit are also available during your stay.
Dr. Aruna provides consultations for determining your Ayurvedic constitution or learning about an Ayurvedic approach to different health issues. She also offers various Ayurvedic treatments in her clinic.
Anjuna Beach is a fun place to go with many handicraft shacks and coconut stands. It is not a beach to spend the whole day at but it has a fun hippy vibe. The Shore Bar offers the perfect view of the magical Goan sunset and has an excellent menu. Ashwem Beach is a beautiful, pristine, and fairly tranquil beach. It features the upscale beach shack restaurant called La Plag, which is known for its exquisite menu and view.
Arambol Beach is a magical place with a beautiful beach, great shacks and shops, and a nice hiking trail through the jungle. Arambol is the perfect place to spend the whole day. Finally, Calangute Beach is busy and colorful, with many beach shacks, sunbeds, and umbrellas. A favorite shack is Domino’s, which has a friendly staff and high standards in the kitchen.
The Anjuna flea market is held every Wednesday from 9 a.m. until sunset, this market began in the 1960s when Anjuna Beach was inhabited mostly by hippies. The flea market was born when tourists, who had a great desire to stay in Anjuna but who were short on cash, started selling their belongings second-hand to other travelers.
Artjuna is an artist colony boutique with arts, crafts, clothing, and jewelry made by artists throughout the world. It has a lovely café where you can enjoy a nice coffee or tea and homemade cake. This store is located in Anjuna. Buddha Arts is the place in Goa to buy statues of Hindu gods and goddesses, Buddhas, tingsha bells, singing bowls, art, and antiques. It is 15 minutes away by taxi in Baga.
Another store to visit is Fab India, a store that offers a range of textiles, jewelry, crafts, teas, items for the home, and gifts. Not only is the quality excellent, but the prices are fair and fixed. Fab India has two locations, Candolim and Mapusa, 15 and five minutes away from Satsanga, respectively.
Mapusa Market is open daily. It is where the locals shop for spices, fruits, vegetables, saris, and more. Here, you will find rows of tailors, cobblers, and vendors selling everything you can imagine. Fridays are special because sellers from throughout Goa set up sidewalk stalls. Although the market is open every day, Sundays are quieter, with only 30% of the shops open for business.
You can spend the evening listening to an eclectic mix of live music, sampling food from the many restaurants around Goa, and shopping under the stars in the Saturday Night Market. It has both Indian and foreign vendors selling textiles, jewelry, and handicrafts from all over the world.
Finally, the Villa Blanche Bistro and Boutique is a lovely, intimate garden café offering beautiful salads and other healthy meals, as well as the best homemade bread, cakes, and ice cream in all of Goa. Villa Blanche’s boutique is very special, offering a small collection of clothing, art, and handicrafts from local artists and designers.
You can visit Dudhasagar Waterfall, which lies at the border of Karnataka and Goa. It is among the world’s 100 highest waterfalls, cascading 2000 feet down into the wooded mountains of the Western Ghats. The falls are located in an idyllic tropical forest with abundant wildlife, rivers, and a swimming lagoon.
The falls are most stunning in the months following the monsoon: October, November, and December. You can also visit Old Goa and its gorgeous Portuguese architecture. It is worth hiring a taxi for the day to tour around Old Goa, where you will see homes and cathedrals built between 1600 and 1900.
Located in Ponda, at the spice plantation, you can see herbs and spice plants growing in their natural environment. The tour is informative and a bit touristic. Your guide will share with you the many ways the different plants can be used medicinally. The tour ends with a professional coconut tree climber making his way up a 15-meter tree, cutting a coconut, and making his way back down in a matter of 30 seconds.
If you want clothes, Bhupat provides tailoring services at Satsanga Retreat. You can have any article of clothing copied or design something new to wear. Bhupat brings fabric samples and takes measurements in the center and then returns with your tailor-made clothing.
If you like astrology, Masterji is available in Goa. You can consult him on the most important issues, including marriage decisions. Masterji is a mainstay at the Fort Aguada Beach Resort, a five-star hotel about 20 minutes away.
If walking complements your yoga practice at home, there is a great 4.5-kilometer walk around the village of Verla Canca. There is so much to see, and the villagers are very friendly. It is the perfect walk for early to mid-morning or early evening when it is cooler and shady.
During your stay, you can enjoy an array of services for an additional cost, including nourishing yourself with beautifully prepared healthy meals or receiving a rejuvenation treatment. The retreat center offers Swedish massage, traditional Abhyanga Ayurvedic massage, and Shirodhara.
Also available is chakra rebalancing, energy work, Shen therapy, or Ayurvedic consultations. There is also a resident acupuncturist who offers acupuncture, cupping, and moxibustion for those that would like to be treated with traditional Chinese medicine.
This traditional Ayurvedic warm oil massage is a deeply relaxing and nourishing experience. By applying warm oil with continuous, fluid, and rhythmic movements, Abhyanga stimulates marma points, vital energy points throughout the body, bringing the mind, body, and spirit together.
Shirodhara is an Ayurvedic restorative therapy where a stream of warm oil flows continuously over the forehead, helping to relieve stress, sleeplessness, and anxiety. Shirodhara begins with a 20-minute Abhyanga massage.
Pedicures, manicures, facials, and waxing are available with Gita, the retreat center's qualified therapist.
Please book your flight to arrive at Goa International Airport (GOI). Transfer from and to this airport is available upon request for an additional cost of 1,200 INR each way.
The nearest bus station is in Mapusa.
The nearest train station is Tivim. If you are taking the train from a major city, such as Mumbai, you will first arrive in Margao at the Madgaon Railway Station to take a connecting train to Tivim Station.
