In January 2018 MoaAlm Mountain Retreat was featured by The Guardian newspaper as one of the best retreats in the world for mind, body and spirit breaks.
Imagine a place surrounded by snowy peaks and green meadows far away from busy city life, a place where you can relax completely and recharge your 'batteries'. A place like this exists and is called MoaAlm - a mountain retreat on the edge of Hohe Tauern National Park in Austria.
Our yoga & meditation retreat combines daily yoga and meditation sessions with guided walks in the surrounding mountains and delicious homemade, vegetarian, organic food. This holiday is something for you if you need a break from daily life if you want to intensify your yoga and meditation practice, if you love the mountains or if you'd just like to treat yourself to a week where you can fully relax and enjoy life!
MoaAlm is a recently renovated guest house with room for a maximum of 10 to 12 guests. You will stay in a room with beautiful views and en-suite private bathroom. MoaAlm has a beautiful yoga studio with a panoramic view of the mountains. The yoga studio is equipped with mats and props to support you in your poses. After an active day in the outdoors, you can enjoy the astonishing view from our sunny terrace or relax in the living room with a good book or new friends.
The program is subject to weather conditions and group preferences but a day during our retreat week could look like this:
Morning yoga and meditation
Guided hike with a stop for lunch at one of the mountain huts
Afternoon tea with freshly baked cake
In the middle of the week there will be a day 'off'. This gives you a chance to rest and digest or to be active and undertake optional activities such as mountain biking, hiking, rafting, paragliding or having a massage at the nearby spa.
There is an outdoor wood-fired hot tub with amazing mountain views; it invites you to literally relax your muscles and breathe in the fresh mountain air. The hot tub will be heated a few times per week and ready for your use! After a few days of yoga and hiking, it might also be nice to get a massage; MoaAlm can recommend the nearby spa hotel that offers excellent treatments such as aromatic massages and facials (not included in the price).
If you'd like a little bit of extra adventure, MoaAlm can organise additional activities such as mountain biking, rafting, canyoning, paragliding, or rock climbing (not included in the price). Another option is to take a day trip to the picturesque town of Lienz, 30 kilometres from MoaAlm, to browse the market and shops or to taste the local wines.
During the week, MoaAlm Mountain Retreat's certified mountain hiking guide will offer guided walks in the area. The team at MoaAlm love to share their knowledge of the mountains and are keen to show you the most beautiful places the Hohe Tauern National Park has to offer. The guided hikes will take up to four hours. If you have a basic fitness level and no serious knee injuries you will be able to participate.
All activities are optional - you are welcome to stay in/around the house to relax and MoaAlm Mountain Retreat is happy to provide you with maps and suggestions if you would like to go out for a self-guided walk.
MoaAlm, your home away from home, is situated at 1,800 meters in the middle of Hohe Tauern National Park in Austria, just 3 kilometers above the small community of Kals am Grossglockner. The house is surrounded by unspoiled nature and wildlife. Green meadows filled with flowers, high peaks with snow caps, and gorgeous water streams are all around!

At MoaAlm, we love food! There is no better start to the day than a nutritious breakfast. MoaAlm serves fresh fruits, oats and cereals, bread, eggs, and much more. After an active day in the outdoors you can warm up with a cup of tea and enjoy the freshly baked cake - you've deserved it!
At dinner, the chef will surprise you with a delicious three-course vegetarian meal, made with lots of love and attention. Wine or beer are also served alongside the meal. MoaAlm believes that food tastes best when it grows close-by: the ingredients are local, fresh, and organic whenever possible. MoaAlm caters for special diets; vegetarian-, vegan-, lactose free-, gluten free- and other diets are not a problem for MoaAlm - just make sure to let them know about your dietary requirements when you book your holiday.
During this retreat, you can book a massage for an additional cost in the nearby spa hotel that offers excellent treatments such as aromatic massages and facials.
Please book your flight to arrive at Salzburg Airport (SZG) or Innsbruck Airport (INN). Airlines are constantly changing routes and the only way to make sure you have an up to date guide is by going directly to the websites.
You can also fly into Munich and Ljubljana. If you fly into these airports, MoaAlm advises that you rent a car to transfer to MoaAlm.
MoaAlm is not the easiest destination to get to. The best places never are, that’s why they avoid the crowds. Depending on your means of transportation, the organizer will meet you at MoaAlm, Huben (a nearby village with a bus stop, 20 minutes’ drive to MoaAlm), or Lienz (the capital of East Tirol, 30 minutes’ drive to MoaAlm).
You can rent a car and drive yourself. This option allows you to explore on your way here. For example, you could skip the Felbertauern tunnel and take the Grossglockner Hoch Alpin Strasse into Osttirol - a stunning mountain road with amazing views. Car rental starts at 140EUR per week.
You can travel to MoaAlm by bus and/or train from Innsbruck and Salzburg to Lienz or Huben in Osttirol. From Innsbruck main train station there is a direct bus to Lienz four times per day. MoaAlm will pick you up in Lienz or Huben. This is often the cheapest but most time-consuming option. Public transportation in Austria is very reliable and the platforms and directions are clearly indicated.
If you don't like flying or driving yourself it might be a good idea to take a train all the way to Austria. The land links in Austria are very reliable.
