The majestic city of Granada offers its visitors a dizzying variety of attractions. From its fun-filled streets as a large student city to its reputation as a Flamenco hot spot, Granada offers both history and modernity. Opposite the palace and fortress complex called Alhambra is the old Muslim quarter of the city called Albayzín, and with its steep banks, winding streets, and sharp turns, an air of the past still lingers in the area.
From the mystical Alpujarras mountains, located to the south of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, down to the Costa Tropical centered in the town of Salobreña, a visitor to this province can ski in the morning, have lunch in the city, then sit on the beach in the afternoon. In this all-encompassing retreat, you can relax by the sea, go to the mountains, enjoy sightseeing, and practice yoga in beautiful Granada.
All three daily fresh, organic, and vegetarian meals are included in the price of this retreat. Lunches can either be a traditional meal in the city or a picnic. You will enjoy the flavors of Mediterranean cuisine, one of the healthiest diets in the world, allowing you to clean and cleanse your body so you can maximize the full benefits of your retreat.
The Granada Retreat Center uses fresh and organic fruits and vegetables and the best olive oil, all supplied by local experts to guarantee the best 100% Mediterranean flavor. Special meal requests are accepted, but please let Liz Denny Yoga and Meditation know well ahead of the retreat.
While on your yoga retreat, you can go for a hike either at Sierra Elvira or Sierra Nevada. You can spend an evening in the old town as well for a night out where you can experience Spain's nightlife, nibbling tapas and watching local flamenco dancers. You can also stroll around the district of Albayzín to explore the old Muslim quarter, then stop at the Arab tea house named Abaco Te for a journey back in time to 1400 A.D. with tea and sweet, local pastry.
You also simply cannot miss visiting the Alhambra, a palace and fortress complex located opposite Albayzín. It was originally constructed as a small fortress in A.D. 889 on the remains of Roman fortifications, and then largely ignored until its ruins were renovated and rebuilt in the mid-13th century. Alhambra's late flowering of Islamic palaces were built for the last Muslim emirs in Spain during the decline of the Nasrid dynasty who were increasingly subject to the Christian kings of Castile.
Afterwards, you can head up to the Mirador San Nicolás for a spectacular view of the Alhambra and Sierra Nevada. You can also visit the cathedral and Royal Chapel of Granada, the resting place of the famous Catholic monarch couple Fernando and Isabel. Take your time to explore the province by also visiting the Costa Tropical for a relaxing day at the beach. Most importantly, practice a variety of yoga styles while immersed in the peace of the spiritual magnetism of Granada.
