The Yoga Forest was founded as a sustainable living experiment, through a desire for living simply, greenly, and in communion with the surroundings. The Yoga Forest is a young dynamic earth-based spirit community, which officially opened in November 2013 with an inaugural PDC course. The community is still in the process of evolving social, ecological, and economic structures and recognize that this journey will be ever unfolding. Together, with the help of work stayers, interns, staff, and a crew of local Mayans, many beautiful things have been created there and there is still much to be done.

The Yoga Forest loves to connect with mutually supportive souls and to expand the evolution of humanity toward a communitarian way of life; a way of life that harmonizes nature with spirit. You will stay in a shared cabana which is a part of The Yoga Forest retreat center in Lake Atitlan, Guatemala. The shared cabanas accommodate four people in large single beds.

Using natural building techniques, the cabanas are constructed with either bamboo or cypress, palm roof, and natural adobe walls or traditional bahareque (wattle and daub) of the area. The beds are comfortable, with warm feather duvets and pillows, and decorated with Peruvian Shipibo fabrics and Guatemalan cushions.

Using natural building techniques, the cabañas are constructed with either bamboo or cypress, palm roof and natural adobe walls, or traditional bahareque (wattle and daub) of this area. The beds are comfortable, with warm feather duvets and pillows, and decorated with Peruvian Shipibo fabrics and Guatemalan cushions.

Private circus tents

Come and glamp at The Yoga Forest and stay in your own private circus tent. All circus tents come with a comfortable mattress, feather duvets, blankets, and cushions to keep you warm and cozy, all within beautiful natural forest surroundings.

Private room - Shiva yogi loft

A unique private space, the Shiva Yogi loft is an open aired bamboo loft in the beautiful Shiva Temple, next to waterfall and cliffs. It is tucked up into the palm roof of this 10 meters high temple, creating a semi-private space with a queen size bed for one or two people. Most suitable for yogis, as meditation often begins downstairs at 6:15 a.m. and the temple may be used for personal practice or various workshops during the day.

History

Traditional Thai massage has its roots in the Indian systems of yoga and Ayurveda. It is believed to has been developed by Jivaka Kumar Baccha, the legendary founder of Thai massage. He was a physician to the Sangha, the order of Buddhist monks and nuns, at the time of the Buddha. People used to call him doctor Shivago and to this day honor him as 'The Father of Medicine'.

Around 2000 years ago, Thai massage was brought from India to Thailand along with Buddhism. Since then, it has been practiced, developed, and handed down through the generations. It was never seen solely as massage but as a spiritual practice, and until fairly recently was mostly practiced in the Thai Buddhist temples.

Theory

Thai yoga massage is a very holistic therapy where the human being is seen and treated as an ever-changing network of physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects that all influence each other. Its primary aim is to restore and balance the body’s energy system which comprises of 10 energy lines that run through the body called sen lines, similar to meridian lines.

These energy lines cannot be seen, but are felt, and are a part of many Eastern healing traditions. The vital life force that is called prana in Sanskrit, chi in Chinese, and Ki in Japanese, travels through these meridians, supplying the body with the energy that is necessary for its survival and healthy functioning.

Due to physical or emotional trauma, bad posture, injuries, or limiting belief systems, this energy can get trapped or blocked, causing physical and emotional dis-ease. Thai yoga massage with its amazing multitude of techniques and adjustments can release these blockages and bring the body back to its natural equilibrium where perfect balance and well being are present.

In yoga practice, you clear the body and mind making space for wisdom and deeper understanding to flow freely and openly. In making space, you allow yourself to experience your fullness and connection to everything around you. Yoga is therefore about cultivating flow through the body and mind and opening up to optimal experience union.

Permaculture follows the same principles. In permaculture, you will be essentially making space for the wisdom of the entire system to fully flow, to become a more open and thriving container for life. Permaculture teaches to observe the natural environment and work with rather than against the natural order of flow. Thus, in permaculture, you are also cultivating union. Through the yoga of permaculture, you are facilitating the experience of yoga as deep ecology by allowing the ecosystem, and yourself within that system, to demonstrate their own evolution.
