During the retreat, you will be residing at Kin-Hin Zen Meditation Center. The center is located in Pachalloor, between Trivandrum and Kovalam, by the Arabian Sea and the Karamana river.

Kin-Hin offers a homestay accommodation and has two large and airy guest rooms with a private sit-out. The rooms are well-furnished with modern en suite bathrooms which provide solar-heated hot water. Wi-Fi, filtered water, tea and coffee are all available for you.

Laughter yoga

Laughter yoga is unique as it teaches a way to laugh for no reason. It incorporates yoga breathing techniques and laughing exercises. During a laughter yoga session, you will be able to experience how even forced laughter in a group setting will quickly become true laughter; spreading like a virus as the nature of laughter is infectious.

Scientific proof shows that the body does not know the difference between fake and real laughter, and will receive the bodily and psychological benefit regardless. Laughter yoga began in 1995 and was the brain child of Dr. Madan Kataria, a medical doctor from Mumbai.

Inspired by documentation that showed laughter to be the best medicine, he began a laughing club in the local park with five people. Today there are thousands of yoga laughter clubs in over 72 countries around the world - a testimony to the benefits of laughter.

Yoga

The peace that comes with exercizing the body and stilling the mind is your true nature and the essence of yoga and meditation practice. Sivan leads the yoga classes at Kin-Hin. The style is traditional Sivananda (Hatha) yoga. Yoga sessions with Sivan include breathing exercises or pranayama, sun salutations, postures or asanas, and guided relaxation. Sivan brings over 15 years of teaching experience to his classes and is a qualified acharya.

Zen meditation

Zen is not a technique to be learned, it is more of an attitude toward life. Zen meditation is a superb spiritual practice with no technique to learn and no promises extended. Sitting with others will give you the chance to connect with one another on a profound level without the need for words. Combine this with a good bout of laughter to reduce stress and tensions and you have the ultimate short break.

  • Karen Sivan

    Karen came to India in 1997 for a three-week holiday and decided to make Kerala her home. For 10 years, she ran yoga and massage holidays in Kovalam. From 2007 until mid-2012, she lived, worked, served, and followed Zen at Bodhi Zendo, blessed to have guidance and support from Zen master, AMA Samy. She then returned to the "marketplace" and began a new chapter with Kin-Hin. She is also a qualified aromatherapist with over 20-year experience. Her diploma in holistic aromatherapy was obtained from the Tisserand Institute in London in 1993.

  • Sivan

    Sivan grew up in Pachalloor, is an experienced yoga teacher in India and Europe, and has a wealth of local knowledge about the area and its customs.

This retreat takes place in Pachalloor, Kerala, India. It is a peaceful location with stunning views.

During the retreat, you will have daily breakfasts and evening meals with your hosts.

You can use your free time to relax and enjoy what your surroundings have to offer.

    PROS J'ai aimé: Karen and Sivan were lovely hosts and even acted as my guides to the local area. The meditation sessions on the roof were wonderful and I shall miss them! I'm very much a beginner to yoga and Sivan tailored the sessions to my level. The food was super tasty!

    Great experience

    CONS Je n'ai pas aimé: We found there to be a lot of meditation (2x 50 mins per day) but if this is too much for you Karen might be able to adapt it. Yoga is 2x 60 mins per day. The accommodation is a pretty 45 min walk away from Kovalum but it's also very easy to get a tuk tuk.

    PROS J'ai aimé: Staying at Karen and Sivan's place made my boyfriend and I feel like we were visiting a family friend's house whilst abroad. It was so nice to have delicious home-cooked food everyday. The room had a kettle, fridge, good wifi and nice hot shower. Overall, we were very well looked-after and had a lovely time. We did 4 nights 5 days of yoga and meditation and were near beginners to both. As we were the only people there, we had a totally personal service so the classes were the right level for us. I would recommend getting a meal at the nearby temple one day for a truly local experience. I also had a cooking lesson one day with Sivan which was great.

    "I loved the stay with Karen and Shivan. Their home and our room was beautifully presented with a great outlook over the lush surrounding forest and local community. Access to kovallam was easy by walking a short stroll through the village to the main road where a tuk tuk was always available. The home was certainly away from the touristy pace that kovallam offered. Karen's sunrise and sunset meditation was a true panacea for us, and as a novice, it provided me with insight into benefits and further understandings of the practice. Karen is so genuine and authentic about her practice without any pretense or judgment. It doesn't seem to matter what level or understanding you might have, there would be something to be gained by sitting with Karen. The twice daily yoga with Shivan was tailored to our level in order to provide strength and resilience over the 5 days. Once again delivered in a casual and welcoming way. The focus on breathing, balance and postures improved over the course as did my muscle strength without pain or injury. Overall an enjoyable and recommendable stay."

I was the only guest for most of the time but even though I'd been hoping to meet people, it was perfect - Karen and Sivan are great company and I had private classes, plus a say in what we had for dinner each night! It was easy to get into Kovalam for lunch each day and Karen and Sivan went out of their way to make me feel comfortable - the little details make a big difference. I would definitely recommend staying here."

    "I stayed at the Kin-Hin Zen Centre with a friend in the beginning of April 2016 for about five days. I really liked the quiet and the peace of this very open center, with a gentle rhythm of morning meditation, morning yoga, and evening meditation. The guestrooms are clean, spacious, and pleasant, there is a nice outside balcony, and Karen's fruit salads for breakfast are delicious. Karen and Sivan are not only great teachers. but they are also very happy to help you organize small excursions in the area. Both Trivandrum and Kovalam Beaches are within a short bus or rickshaw ride. Trivandrum Zoo is a must place to visit. Since The life of Pi, it's on everybody's list! I liked Kin-Hin very much as it is a base from where to further explore if you want, or a nice place to be, which has a soul with its relaxed schedule and positive outlook on life. I certainly got what I was looking for and hope to go back!"

    "If you are looking for a piece of zen paradise, Kin-Hin Zen Centre is the place for you. We booked a five-day meditation and yoga retreat at the center and it was one of the highpoints of our trip to India. The center is well located in the peaceful village of Pachaloor, just minutes away from busy Trivandrum and touristy Kovalam Beach. Our room was lovely. It was clean and zen, big enough for our backpacker needs, with access to a private balcony to chill out. Our host Karen led our meditation sessions on the roof: We were surrounded by palm trees and could hear birds, nearby ocean waves, and occasionally, neighborhood temple music. Hatha yoga session followed with teacher Sivan, who gently but firmly pushed us to our limits through a strong yoga routine, with just enough variety positions to keep us captivated. One session was interrupted by monkeys passing by in the street. Breakfast and dinner were taken at the center at the couple’s table or balcony. We got the chance of tasting Karen’s epic, world-famous fruit salad, as well as local food cooked at home, while chatting with our hosts about the region, local traditions, travelers tips, and others. They made us feel right at home with their generosity and warmth. We also were able to relax with a wonderful ayurvedic massage."

    "My stay at Kin Hin Zen center with Karen was a highlight of my first ever trip to India. It was unique and comfortable and Karen was the best hostess. We had a ball and our trip to the tip was an unforgettable experience of sheer wonder and delight.     "Kin-Hin is a comfortable, friendly meditation place, with Karen as the helpful guide and Shivan as the (optional) yoga instructor. Away from crowds, but near beaches, under coconut palm trees which the birds like. Be prepared for early awakenings sometimes when youre staying there! I got to know a small group of daily meditators and aim to return before too long."

    "Kin-Hin Zen Centre is beautifully located under huge trees providing a nice shade. Its close to the sand beach and in walking distance to shopping facilities. The place is calm, clean and convivial. Karen is a helpful and caring hostess. As a resident, you can get all necessary information you might need for your trip through India. You will wake up every morning to the beautiful voices of the birds living around the house. Enjoy meditation during your stay. I can highly recommend this guest house to everyone.     "I stayed at Kin-Hin Zen Centre for a few days both before and after attending a Buddhist meditation retreat at Bodhi Zendo in Tamil Nadu State. My aim was to acclimatize after my flight from Australia, to sample some good local cuisine, to shop, meditate, and to do a little sight seeing. All these goals were more than satisfied without hassle or stress thanks to the depth of local knowledge possessed by the owner Karen, and the suggestions and assistance she so freely provided.Kin-Hin Zen Centre is situated a short distance from the tourist and hotel strip along Kovalam's Beaches and sits right among tall coconut trees and the homes of local families. This proximity of locals provides a real taste of daily Indian life and color. A highlight of my stay was being able to witness the traditional climbing and harvesting of coconuts right outside the building. The regular morning and early evening meditation sessions are also a great asset in you wish to participate. I would most certainly stay again."

    "If you are beckoned by the sea, but wish to stay slightly away from crowds, and have an eye for natural beauty, Kin-Hin is the place for you. The host is amazing, her laughter is contagious, one does not feel like staying in a place that is profit-driven. Instead, what you have here is a place that feels like home. It's a perfect place to laze around, dream, spot birds and marvel at the beauty of a Kerala village.You could take walks to a quiet beach if you're inclined towards being a recluse. Or you could walk up to the beach with many restaurants and people, which is 10-15 minutes by walk. Karen is one of the most wonderful hosts you'd find around there. You need to be there to experience that. She is a meditator, an aromatherapist, teaches laughter yoga. Above all, she is a wonderful human being, who would never impose these things upon you. I would recommend this place to all peace-loving people."

    "I was looking for a place in south India to begin my travels here and found a perfect location at Kin-Hin Zen Centre. The rooms are spacious, clean, and very comfortable. You are just a short walk down some lanes to the ocean if you are seeking time at the beach. There's lots going on for sight seeing and Karen, the host, is a fantastic resource to figure out what to see.I was hoping for both quiet time in meditation as well as the freedom to go touring. And that is exactly what I've found here. If you are interested in meditation and yoga but not sure you're ready for the ashram scene, Kin-Hin Zen Centre may be just the place to get started.     "Karen and Sivan's new location is beautiful amongst the palm trees, and it is a two-minute walk to the river and sea. The rooftop is great for meditation, as it's covered so no sun beating down on you, and there is a balcony area for relaxing outside the rooms. Karen is a great hostess and both she and Sivan can give you whatever information you need about the entire Trivandrum / Kovalom area."
