Mala Dhara Eco Resort is the perfect balance of off-the-grid and luxury. Set amongst idyllic rice fields and mountains, the resort includes an organic vegetarian / vegan restaurant, an organic farm, Himalayan salt water pool, natural clay herbal steam, two gorgeous yoga studios and a variety of absolutely stunning luxury villas.

Time spent at Mala Dhara Eco Resort almost always includes serenity, gorgeous sunsets, relaxation and connection to nature and if you are lucky, an encounter with the resort's own mystical water buffalo, Jai Dee.

-Raindrop Adobe Villa

Raindrop Villa is perhaps the most iconic structure at the Mala Dhara. Completely circular in form and without a corner anywhere in the design, the Raindrop Villa promises an energetically soothing and welcoming stay for every guest. Even the windows are circular. Raindrop Villa faces north toward the mountains of Mae On, with a small veranda and hammock outside and away from the other villas. The large soft and cozy double bed, custom designed mosquito nets and soft pillows in the Raindrop Villa guarantees a restful night sleep.

Hobbit Adobe Villa

The Hobbit Villa is so named for its handmade round doors and specially designed steel work on both the main entrance and the bathroom doors. As one of Mala Dhara Eco Resort's Earthen Adobe Villas, the Hobbit Villa has a unique appeal as it was lovingly assembled one molded sun-dried brick at a time by the friends and staff of the Mala Dhara Eco Resort.

The Hobbit Villa beckons the guests to stay and enjoy the spaciousness of its interior and sitting area, warm curves and enormous poster bed with cotton mosquito net. The bathroom does not disappoint with an intriguingly large rounded doorway, rain shower and artisanal wooden bathtub.

Dhara Villa

The Dhara Villa feels like coming home when you enter through the large wooden custom designed double doorway. Enter a bit more and you will invariably be swept up by the enticing vision of the vintage wooden bathtub and large rain shower in the beautifully designed bathroom. Know you will rest easy in the large comfy double bed tucked back into its own cozy nook and sweetly shrouded in a cotton mosquito net.

Jai Dee Villa

Jai Dee Villa is a favorite villa at Mala Dhara Eco Resort. An earthen adobe brick design, hand molded on site and lovingly assembled. This villa, while smaller inside, offers the same standard of design, amenities and comforts as the other Mala Dhara Eco Resort's villas. The Jai Dee Villa got its name from Jai Dee (means "good heart" in Thai) which is the rescue water buffalo at Mala Dhara Eco Resort.

Jai Dee loves to roll around in the mud in his free time and the Jai Dee villa provides great views of his exploits as it is located amongst the rice fields on Mala Dhara Eco Resort's organic farm. This location offers the most private setting to stay at the Mala Dhara Eco Resort and perhaps the most unique.

The bed is large and seems to define this villa as one where a luxurious nights' sleep. That means being out in nature with all of the creature comforts you need such as epic views, breezy nights, a cotton mosquito net, fluffy pillows, a rain shower, aircon and fridge.

The Mala Villas

The Mala Villas are specially designed villas that can be fashioned as either two private villas with shared outdoor bathroom or as two connected villas that are perfect for family or friends.

The villas have separate entrances and are connected by an enormous round glass door that can be completely closed off for separate guests or used for family and friends sharing a connected villa. The Mala Villas are earthen structures mixed with brick work, large beds, cotton mosquito nets and tastefully chosen furniture. Each has their own aircon, fridge, Wi-Fi and fans.

Teak Wood Adobe Fusion Cabin

Teak Wood Adobe Fusion Cabin is new in the Mala Dhara Eco Resort and was just built in the area.

The intention of this retreat is to explore the chakra system through a beginners' lens, go deep with group-based discussions and workshops, see where Eastern philosophy meets Western knowledge, find your flow with fluid meditation and movement classes, tap into the ancient wisdom of your body, immerse yourself in the local culture of Northern Thailand, and celebrate the New Year with your new tribe.

The chakra system is the rainbow bridge that will take you on a journey through and to yourself. Each chakra is like a stepping stone and with each step, you will gain a greater understanding of your bodies, health, psychology, relationships, personalities, emotions, past, and connection to the divine. Though many study the chakras through a Kundalini lens, you will take a step back and look at the chakras through many lenses, steeped in science, psychology, Tantra and Hatha yoga, anatomy, as well as philosophy.

Each day will lead you to a new chakra and each day will look different. You will incorporate asanas, meditations, visualizations, psychology, philosophy, anatomy, mantras, mudras, stories and other activities to fully immerse yourself as well as develop a deeper understanding of this ancient system. You will also be looking at the "health" of each of your chakras by considering the physical attributes, qualities, imbalances and balances.

East West Retreats hopes that by the end of the retreat, you will have a good idea of which chakras are balanced and imbalanced. That will provide you with some invaluable insight into your own transformation.

The Sanskrit word chakra literally translates to "wheel" or disk. Although there are several variations of the chakra system, most texts point to seven main chakras. In yoga and Ayurveda, this term refers to wheels of energy throughout the body aligning along the spine, starting from the base of the spine through to the crown of the head.

Like anatomy texts describe the architecture of the body through bones, muscles, etc., the chakra system describes the architecture of the soul through the seven subtle energy centers. This invisible energy called Prana is a vital life force, which keeps us vibrant, healthy, and alive. To visualize a chakra in the body, imagine a swirling wheel of energy where matter and consciousness meet. Together, the chakras provide a system for wholeness that integrate mind, body and spirit.

Yoga and meditation

You will be mainly practicing a Vin / Yin flow which tends to be a slower and more mindful pace. Almost like yin and yang, Yin / Vin is a 50 / 50 combination of Vinyasa and Restorative Yin yoga. Half the class will be active, energetic and focus on sun salutations as well as strengthening poses while the other half will be done primarily on the floor with the use of props and blankets.

The joined practice of Vinyasa and Yin yoga will invite you to restore your energy, strengthen the body and immune system, nourish the fluids in the joints, encourage organ health, promote deeper sleep as well as calm the mind. The Yin and Yang qualities of the classes will help you find a healthy balance in your fast paced and busy lives. Please note that if you are looking for a power yoga retreat where you will be sweating bullets after doing 15 sun salutations, this might be not the retreat for you.

Because you will combine yoga and adventure in this retreat, you will be containing the yoga practice into one solid two-hour practice first thing in the morning along with 15 - 30 minutes of meditation practice. Your evenings will be spent by doing group discussions, activities, connective exercises and simply relaxing so please be prepared to connect with those around you in a deep and authentic way.

Level of difficulty

If you are new to yoga, this will be the perfect place to start your practice. East West Retreats will be delighted to have you. East West Retreats will take care and make sure your alignment is creating a safe practice for you. Please do not worry if you have never heard of a chakra before because you will be learning about them from a beginner's lens.

Day 1: Root Chakra

You will ground into your body and explore your ancestral roots with a group sauna, fire and drum circle.

Day 2: Sacral Chakra

You will invite transformation into your life as you welcome 2018 in with a sunrise yoga session and intention setting workshop.

Day 4: Heart Chakra

You will learn the art of love, gratitude and compassion through interacting with gentle giants at a sustainable elephant sanctuary.

Day 5: Throat Chakra

You will purify and open the throat center through a song with a beautiful evening Kirtan and Cacao ceremony.

Day 6: Third Eye Chakra

You will invoke ancient wisdom through exploring Chiang Mai's beautiful temples and channel it with a group art collaboration.

Day 7: Crown Chakra

  • Krystal Penrose

Krystal Penrose began to immerse herself in the art of connecting yoga and meditation in her 200-hour yoga teacher training in Rishikesh, India. This immersion developed into a huge passion for blending the ancient wisdom and traditions of the East with the fluid eclectic elements of yoga from the West. Because of this, her teaching incorporates many styles, philosophies, and traditions including Hinduism, Daoism, Buddhism, Tantra, Qi Gong, Ayurveda, dance as well as Reiki.

Yoga Alliance RYT 200 (Hatha Yoga)

Tiffany's interest in yoga was piqued in Louisville, Kentucky around 2003 when she began attending yoga classes out of curiosity. She teaches Hatha flow classes that involve fluid movement and body alignment with carefully chosen postures to strengthen the body and to prepare the body for meditation. Her classes are challenging but fun, safe, light-hearted and accessible to all levels. She is currently completing her 500-RYT studies with a concentration in Tantra yoga.

This retreat will be held in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Chiang Mai is ranked by Travel and Leisure Magazine as Asia's number one city and number three on a list of the world's best cities. Chiang Mai has a lot more to offer than what meets the eye. Located in the mountains of Northern Thailand, it is a city of many faces and sides. On one corner you may find hundreds of street stalls serving up pad thai in a bustling night market and on another corner you might find a peaceful Buddhist temple with the sound of divine mantras humming from its windows.

Hop on a motorbike and drive any direction in Chiang Mai for 20 minutes and you will end up amongst mountains, waterfalls, endless rice fields or all three if you are lucky. Chiang Mai also has an internationally recognized digital nomad and artist community, so you will never get bored with the countless workshops, festivals, events and coffee shops around.

Chiang Mai's population of Jai restaurants make it vegetarian and vegan heaven. If you are a carnivore, try the region's most famous dish Khao Soi that is hard to find outside of this magic city. Chiang Mai has enough going on to keep you on your toes but enough space for you to sit on a peaceful lake and contemplate your existence. As the cultural capital of Thailand and quieter alternative to Bangkok, it is a beautiful mix of temples and tempura, monks and motorbikes as well as mountains and markets.

    A Week with Krystal

CONS Je n'ai pas aimé: If one looks for intense yoga practice with meditation and self awareness courses, than this retreat would not fulfil their expectations.

PROS J'ai aimé: It was my first yoga retreat and I had low expectations. I choose this retreat for the location, which was perfect. Remote in the mountains, with open view of the Mediterranean sea. Food cooked at the location was amazing. We also did couple of tours and the whole week was more of a relaxing by the sea kind of experience. It suited me perfectly.

    A little unorganized

CONS Je n'ai pas aimé: The retreat was pretty unorganized and the hosts ended up have some altercations with the people who owned the location and were asked to leave the property. One of the cars that transported people from SFO airport to Mendocino broke down. The hosts did not seem concerned with figuring out how to get people to the airport on the last day. Luckily a few of the other attendees were able to drive more than half the group to the airport. Lovely people, but the host, Krystal, was unorganized and unprofessional.

PROS J'ai aimé: The people who also attended were great.

Réponse de l'organisateur: Hi there, Thanks for leaving your feedback. I put a lot of my heart and soul into these retreats so it is absolutely necessary for me to hear all feedback, both good and bad. So thank you for taking the time to leave your opinion, I appreciate it. I'm sorry to hear you that your experience on the retreat was that it was disorganized and that I acted in an unprofessional way. I will definitely take that into consideration when hosting future retreats so that everyone attending feels safe, happy and cared for in an organized way. I hope that there were some positive things you took from the experience as well, and I just want to say thanks again for leaving your honest feedback. It was a pleasure meeting you :) Krystal

"The retreat in California was such a wonderfully nourishing experience. I loved the activities out in nature. I was really touched by the depth of connection the group achieved. Overall, the retreat felt like it had a really lovely balance of structure and flow, and really delivered on its intention of disconnecting to reconnect."

"This experience with East West Retreats absolutely changed my life. I am so thankful to have been able to explore another part of the world in a way that I might not have otherwise done without Krystal! While in India, I learned so much about their culture, religion, yoga, and about myself. It was a trip that I will cherish in my heart forever and the memories I made along the way, I will never forget!"

"I am still traveling in India but I must say the location for the retreat was Ideal! I thoroughly enjoyed Rishikesh, and it helped me gain confidence for the next part of my journey. The retreat was planned very well as there were many things to do each day and it was super exciting to be a part of the maiden voyage. Krystal gathered fantastic, well educated, and vibrant teachers. Each of them made my experience magical. I learned so much from this retreat, many great golden nuggets to take with me, different alignment for yoga asana, different ways of meditation and lots of chanting and education to boot!"

"Just got back from India, and I cannot put into words what a life-changing and amazing experience I had with East West Retreats. Krystal is so detail-oriented and she goes beyond to assist participants inadequately preparing for the retreat. She was always available to answer any questions leading up to the trip and she laid out all the sometimes-overwhelming aspects of international travel. Once we arrived in India, I felt immediately comfortable, safe, and taken care of. Every detail followed the expectations set. Our accommodations were outstanding, good location, peaceful, with enough amenities for comfort and still authentic to India and the experience. I thought the retreat had the perfect balance of classes or workshops (not to mention our teachers were all top quality!), excursions, activities planned, as well as free, and flexible time. I could not imagine a better experience for my first time in India. Krystal goes above and beyond to add personalized details to the experience and she is so good at rolling with the punches and remaining flexible and flowing with the unexpected things that pop up during the travel. I highly recommend East West Retreats if you are looking for an authentic, well-planned, and enriching travel or retreat experience."
