The meaning of yoga is to join together or to unite, the physical, mental, metaphysical, and psychological levels of an individual. Yoga is an ancient system of techniques for all-round health and wellbeing of the individual. These techniques have been tested and refined over thousands of years and are available to anyone willing to learn them. The scientific and easy-to-learn exercises provide a practical, natural, and holistic way to achieve health and vitality. The purpose of yogic practices is to destroy the impurities of the mind and acquire physical practices for ultimately attaining self-realization.
Inside every human there is a network of nerves and sensory organs that interprets the outside physical world. At the same time, within us resides a subtle system of channels (nadis) and centers of energy (chakras) which look after our physical, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual being. The chakras are the seven main energy centers in the body. They are located along the spine, starting at the base and running upwards to the crown of the head. The chakras are described as whirling disks of light, and each chakra radiates a specific color and energy. As each chakra relates to specific spiritual, emotional, psychological, and physical issues, the conscious awareness and the balancing of these energy centers lead to well-being.
Excursions / nature walk to nearby spiritual places. Any other visits, sightseeing, and excursions can be organized during this time on chargeable basis.
Dewa Retreat is a boutique hotel ensconced amidst the foothills of the Great Himalayas in Tapovan, Rishikesh. It is a serene and peaceful locale away from the main highway. The sacred Ganges River pours luminous blue-green water from the Shivalik Hills on her journey to the plains. It is easy to see why Rishikesh (Lord Vishnu) was named Lord of the Senses and why Uttarakhand, the state in which it lies, is known as DevBhumi Land of the Gods.
City of pilgrimage for Indians and Westerners alike, Tapovan, Rishikesh is where the famous Beatles came to find a meaning to life with the Maharishi and stayed long enough to write over 50 songs! Many travelers still follow in their footsteps to de-stress by learning yoga and studying ancient philosophy and spirituality.

Just as the suns rising is marked by prayer, so is its setting. Each evening as the suns last rays reflect off the boundless waters of Mother Ganga, we gather for the Ganga arti. This divine light ceremony is filled with devotional song, prayer, ritual, and a palpable sense of the divinity of Mother Ganga. The aarti, an ornate oil lamp, lined with dozens of flames burning in pure ghee, is offered to God. We give thanks for the blessings bestowed upon us that day, as well as symbolically offer light back to Ganga arti. It is a time when we break free from the normal stresses and strains of everyday life and gather together in joy, reverence, and peace.
Of all the rivers of the Indian subcontinent, the Ganga is perhaps the most beautiful. It originates from Gaumukh in the Garhwal region of the Himalayas and is a superb river for inflatable rafts. Rafting on its waters is an unusual experience and one to cherish. To ride these rapids and to come to terms with their strength and wildness is to grow in spirit and to nurture the very thing that dreams are made of.
For those looking for other physically challenging activities like kayaking, climbing, rappelling, and cliff-jumping, these are all also available.
On the banks of the river Ganga, a sandy river beach and a portion of riverside forest exists. An excellent getaway from city stress, the tented river camp offers complete outdoor experience with white water rafting at its very best: camp games, solitude, campfire tales, kayaking, abseiling, good food, and new found friends. And for the not so adventurous, it is a great holiday to put their feet up and relax with a few lazy walks thrown in.
Get onto special mountain bikes to explore the forests and villages, or ask for a more rugged route to push the level of challenge further.
Dewa organizes local classical musical and dance recitals occasionally. You can also request our staff to take you to a neighboring village to witness the festivities of the numerous spiritual and cultural events that take place each month.
At Dewa, guests have an opportunity to spend half a day at a village up a hill which is about a 1 hour hike. Here you can see the herb, agricultural, and rice paddy fields. You are guided by our resident team of farmers to learn more about the various items that are grown in and around Dewa. Activities include harvesting, planting, weeding, and watering the various food and herbs that go into their food and rejuvenation oils. Please note the agricultural activity is seasonal in villages.
Guests are also free for the rest of the day to relax in our spa or read a book overlooking the Himalayas at our library and outdoor lounge.
