Come and join Cowdance for a mountain biking and yoga break in Grizedale, Lake District. The forest offers a range of mountain bike trails that cater for all abilities. You will stay in the converted stables of a Quaker meeting house in the Lake District. The accommodation is simple but has everything you need, a bit like a hostel. There is one female dorm and one mixed dorm, both of which share a bathroom with toilets and shower facilities.

Please note that whilst there are individual shower cubicles each with a lockable door, the bathroom as a whole is mixed sex. The kitchen is well equipped and the open plan lounge area is kept cozy with a wood burning stove.

​%Sheets, pillows, and pillow cases are provided. A duvet can be rented for an additional five GBP, or bring a sleeping bag. There is no Wi-Fi and very little phone signal so you can digitally detox over the weekend too. In case of emergencies, the center does have a landline. You will also likely experience periods of signal whilst out riding.


Mountain biking

Combined with yoga, mountain biking offers a potent way to be present in the moment. Connect with the earth through your bike, feeling it hug the ground as you roll over obstacles and gain traction uphill. The concentration required dispels any mind chatter as bike and body demand complete attention.

​-Skills sessions

Improve your technical ability in both ascending and descending, along with the opportunity to work on more isolated skills such as cornering, bunny hops, and manuals.

​-Introduction to on-trail bike maintenance

Learn how to be self-sufficient whilst out on the trails with a lesson in basic repairs.

​-Self-guided rides

Grizedale Forest offers a range of trails for a wide range of abilities and fitness levels. Cowdance will pick out the good ones and suggest self-guided routes suitable for your level.

​%Indoor lockable bike storage, a bike wash, and tools will be provided for use at the base. The mountain bike guide will also be on hand to advise on simple repairs. You will need to bring a suitable bike in good working order, or arrange hire, along with a helmet and basic on-trail repair kit.


​-Yoga for mountain bikers

Twice daily yoga classes will stretch and condition muscles used for biking, allowing you to experience total escapism in the woods. Put daily worries to the side during the morning's yoga practice and take a new clarity of thought onto the trails. See how your biking is improved by a calm mental state.

​-Forest bathing and outdoor guided meditation

As well as indoor yoga, if the weather permits, you will bathe in the forest environment during guided meditation. Forest bathing is one way to feel good in nature, specifically through opening the senses and taking in the sights, sounds and smells of a forest environment. Other benefits of forest bathing include the following:

Alice McNeil
Alice is a registered yoga teacher and chartered physiotherapist based in the beautiful peak district. With an M.Sc. in Psychology and in Physiotherapy, Alice uses yoga to bridge the gap between these two disciplines as she invites you to explore your physical and psychological capabilities, on and off the mat. Alice’s classes are designed to be inclusive, challenging, and fun. She currently runs a specialist yoga for adventure sports course alongside one-on-one teachings, and is a guest yoga teacher at a number of adventure and cycling festivals around the UK.
Pete McNeil
Pete’s aim is to inspire and facilitate adventures by bicycle. He is a qualified mountain bike guide and has worked extensively in both the UK and overseas, including training mountain bike guides in Nepal and running biking holidays in Spain. He has an infectious enthusiasm for riding bikes, as well as professional knowledge on skills, mechanics, and navigation. He currently runs his own company, guiding mountain biking, leading bike-packing courses, and giving presentations on the many adventures he has had by bicycle.

Lieu du séjour

This retreat will take place in Grizedale, Lake District, United Kingdom. In the Lake District, near the southern tip of Lake Windermere, the retreat center is surrounded by its own private deciduous woodland and is a short ride from the mountain biking trails in Grizedale Forest.

The area has a sleepy, peaceful feel to it, with windy roads and leafy hedgerows. If you travel by car, the center is around 30 minutes drive from the M6 though remember to take a map as there is no mobile internet signal as you approach the center.

During this retreat, you will be served daily vegetarian meals. Getting meal times right is a priority for Cowdance. Cowdance always uses fresh ingredients, many of which are organic. All food is cooked from scratch and is healthy, wholesome and nutritious.

Everything will be vegetarian. Other dietary requirements are catered for, so please let Cowdance know your preferences when you book. They will try to make meal times inclusive so if there is someone in the group with a specific dietary need, Cowdance aims to cater for them by preparing meals that everyone can eat together.

​%You may be asked to assist with laying the table and washing up. Rather than being a chore, this experience is a really positive way to bring the group together and create a communal atmosphere.
