Imagine an island where you can step off the shore and explore the underwater reefs from almost everywhere. Each dive, whether with scuba or snorkel gear, provides a view of an abundance of fish and coral. If you prefer to spend your day above the water, there are a myriad of watersports and land adventures.
Bird watching is one interesting attraction. Island-based naturalists can take you on guided tours to see the Bonairean parrot, flamingos, trupials, and yellow-shouldered parakeets, and the yellow-billed cuckoo.
There’s many different day tours or activities which you can enjoy.
At the end of the day, enjoy either casual or fine dining, with a plethora of different restaurants to try.
Land lovers will enjoy driving through Washington-Slagbaai National Park. Iguanas, goats, and many species of birds make the park their home. After driving along the scenic routes, stop for a swim at Slagbaai or snorkel at one of the many stops. Bonaire is restful and magical. Once you come, you will be back again and again.
Hikers will be thrilled with the diverse options. One such hike, Ruta Dos Pos, takes you through the wild countryside of Bonaire on well-marked trails. The trail is for intermediate hikers and takes one to one and a half hours. The trail takes you past a fruit plantation, Dos Pos - the local water source for neighboring farmers and a myriad of animal life.
If you are quiet, you will catch a glimpse of the wild pigs locally known as porko di mondi. See watapana trees, a massive tamarind tree, and some amazing rocks and geological formations. Cactus is plentiful with many varieties seen on this hike. In the distance near the peak, you may see Lake Goto. Listen to the songs of the small chuchubi bird or the squawking prikichi.
All of the waters around Bonaire are part of the Bonaire National Marine Park. This includes Lac Bay. An entrance fee of 10 USD per calendar year is charged to all users of the park who sail and 25 USD for divers. You may pay and pick up your marine tag at Jibe City or Bonaire Windsurf Place. It is a privilege to windsurf in this protected area.
Come explore the waters of Bonaire on a standup paddle boarding. Also called SUP, this new floaty board is all the rage from coast to coast. Standup paddle boarding can be traced back to the old days in Polynesia. In the 1940s, Waikiki Beach life guards used to stand on their surfboards paddling around to patrol the beaches.
Windsurfing is enjoyed in the south at Lac Bay. Bonaire has become one of the best-known islands for this fast and exciting sport. Gin clear water, on shore breezes and two professional shops make Lac Bay windsurf heaven. Kiting is rapidly becoming a favorite pastime on Bonaire. While resting in between sailing sessions, kayak near the mangroves or drive along the south to see the famous pink flamingos, the slave huts, and the salt hills.
Other activities to do include caving, parasailing, geocaching, kiting, rappelling down a lighthouse, and, of course, boat tours and trips. Bonaire’s perfect climate for water and nature sports make this island perfect for the outdoor lover.
The week features yoga practice, Pilates, spa, and restorative services that can be added to the package at an additional cost. Caribbean Wind and Sun Vacations offers individualized programs in restorative services including Reiki, reflexology, Bonaire healing salt scrubs, and massages. They also can create a personalized activity schedule for Pilates, Tai Chi, yoga, and body pump.
