Hébergement

Bodhi Surf and Yoga is the first surf and yoga camp in the world to become B Corp certified for having met the highest standards of social and environmental performance. Additionally, they're a member of 1% for the Planet and an ambassador for the Transformational Travel Council.

The Bodhi Surf and Yoga lodge is comprised of four lodging options, a saline dipping pool, several common areas, a yoga studio, and lush gardens.

Features

  • Solar panels: They installed solar panels in the summer of 2022. They are by the company Yuxta Energy, a fellow Costa Rican B Corp company. They are stoked to have finally checked this item off their "to-do" list!
  • Compost center: They upgraded their compost center in early 2023. While they reduce food waste by serving buffet-style, the remaining food scraps are composted on-site and the soil used for the gardens around their property
  • Rain water collector: This was added in mid-2022 after realizing that a great part of their water usage comes from rinsing the salt water off of their surf equipment. They are happy to be reducing their use of this precious resource
  • Surf bodega: Their "boardroom" is much cooler than most! They are excited to partner with NSP Surfboards and use them for the majority of their surf equipment, as well as a few local shapers! DaFin and Slyde are their bodysurf hookups!
  • Yoga platform: This breezy, tree-surrounded space is where the magic happens! The Bodhi Shambala Yoga Center is their on-site, wooden, open-air yoga studio. It is just steps away from the various rooms and bungalows and common areas

Rooms

Bungalow Gratitud

Bungalow Gratitud is the largest of the accommodation options, housing up to four adults and one child. It is ideal for groups of three to four people and can also be a good option for two people.

It is a raised wooden structure with a spacious deck, kitchenette, private bathroom, a master bedroom, a studio-style room, and a large open space that can serve as another sleeping area or a living / dining room.

It has large windows for maximum light and air flow, and ceiling fans in each of the rooms. For sleeping arrangements, the bungalow has two queen-sized beds (with therapeutic mattresses) and a daybed that can also serve as a regular bed for a smaller individual.

The bungalow has a fully equipped kitchenette with all the necessary kitchen utensils for you to prepare your own meals, hot water, and Wi-Fi.

Bungalow Espiritu

Bungalow Espiritu is a smaller version of Bungalow Gratitud. It's an independent unit with a queen-sized bed, ceiling fan, full private bathroom, basic kitchenette set-up, and spacious deck. Bungalow Espiritu is a great option for a couple or single traveler who desires more privacy.

It has hot water, Wi-Fi, and the kitchenette which includes a small refrigerator, sink, blender, and toaster oven to prepare simple meals. The structure is built out of wood and sits slightly raised. The deck outside provides a great place to sit, relax, and drink your morning coffee.

Inside, the single room contains a queen bed along with the kitchenette, followed by the private bathroom. The large windows provide great lighting and combined with the high ceilings, allow for excellent air flow to keep the unit cool.

Room Armonia

Room Armonia is a hotel-style room with a private bathroom. The room is ideal for either a solo traveler or a couple who doesn’t require an independent unit and plan on being active during their stay, be it surfing, practicing yoga, hiking in the mountains, or simply relaxing at the beach.

It contains a double or full sized bed comfortably suiting one or two people, a ceiling fan, and has Wi-Fi access. The full private bathroom is attached and has hot water. The room is located on the second-floor, above Cocina Alegria, and next to Room Amistad.

The view from the shared deck of Room Armonia and Room Amistad is the most enjoyable on the property and simply a great place to sit and take in the sights and sounds that surround the Bodhi Surf lodge. The room is accessed via the wooden staircase that leads from Cocina Alegria on the ground floor to both Room Armonia and Room Amistad.

Guests staying in Room Armonia are welcome to make use of the centrally-located common area Alegria.

Room Amistad

Room Amistad (Spanish for friendship), a room with two individual beds and a private bathroom, is the ideal room for two friends. They know that traveling with friends makes for great memories and they hope that this room will provide surf and yoga camp buddies a comfortable lodging option.

Amistad is best suited for friends joining the Bodhi Sessions surf and yoga camp. The room has two individual beds and is simple but spacious and maintains the homey and comfortable vibe present in the rest of the lodge.

It does not have what some consider to be necessities (air conditioning or television), the intention of the Bodhi lodge is to promote comfort, simplicity, sustainability, and harmony, with nature and between guests. It also has hot water, Wi-Fi, a ceiling fan, and roomy, lockable cubbies for securing your belongings.

Guests staying in room Amistad are welcome to make use of the fully-equipped kitchen in centrally-located common area Alegria and its ample corresponding dining / social / hang out area located on the ground floor. The entry to Room Amistad is by-way of a wooden staircase.

The staircase leads from common area Alegria on the ground floor to a spacious second-floor deck from which you can access both Room Amistad and Room Armonia.

The deck offers what is perhaps the best view on the Bodhi lodge property, making it a great place to enjoy a cup of coffee, read a book, or to simply sit and take in the sights and sounds that encompass the community.

Programme

Why dedicate two weeks?

This is the ideal retreat for any prospective waterwoman or man, or anyone looking to immerse themselves in one of the planet's most magical places - the ocean. It has been said that to reach success in anything, you need to dedicate 10,000 hours.

While this is not a 10,000 hour program, it is immersive enough (pun intended) to be a great start! The retreat is also the perfect amount of time to truly disconnect with fast-paced, modern life and reconnect with nature, self, and purpose.

Their Bodhi Awaken retreat is the ultimate Costa Rica ocean-based escape. It provides to weeks of bodysurf, surf, and yoga instruction in a perfect progression that will give you ample time and space to dive deep.

With the bodysurf and surfing components, the two weeks of dedicated ocean time build slowly and sustainably so that you can learn both of these two activities completely. In the first week, utilizing only your body to catch white and then green (unbroken) waves, and in the second incorporating the surfboard.

With yoga, the first week is often about adjusting to the physical flow of the practice. Yet with another week, you get more into the juice of the practice - the mental and spiritual components. Dedicating two weeks to the practice is a sure-fire way to develop an excellent habit that you can take home with you.

Furthermore, two weeks is the perfect amount of time to truly disconnect from your work life, and reconnect with nature, self, and purpose. Giving yourself this much time allows you to go deeper into the place you are in, but also the vacation version of yourself (or one that is "too blessed to be stressed!").

Best two-week surf, yoga, and ocean awareness retreat

Whether you are a newbie to surfing and the ocean, an experienced ocean person, or somewhere in the middle, if you are someone who wants to become comfortable in the ocean - learn more, or improve your surfing - this two-week retreat is for you.

You will learn about ocean safety, swim techniques, and how to surf waves on nothing more than your stomach. You will learn about the history of surfing (both body and board), as well as all of the skills to catch and stand up on green waves! You will tie it all together with restful, invigorating, and regenerative yoga classes on their outdoor platform.

Moreover, you will do all of this (and so much more) in a beautiful place and unique vacation destination - Bodhi Surf and Yoga lodge in Bahia Ballena, Costa Rica.

Their community is still small and untouched by the large-scale development that exists in most tropical beach towns. Their lodge is simple yet pristine, and located in the heart of the community. Their vacations are self-admittedly different than the norm: Focused on experiential learning, personal growth, and finding connection to a greater purpose.

This retreat is a beautiful culmination of all that Bodhi Surf and Yoga has to offer, and will provide a one-of-a-kind, two-week vacation in beautiful Costa Rica.

Week 1: Bodysurfing and ocean awareness

The first week of the Bodhi Awaken retreat is designed to empower you to feel safe and confident in the ocean, to help you understand how it moves, and to impart you with skills and knowledge in the most simple form of catching a wave - wave sliding.

Whether you are an ocean-newbie or an experienced waveslider, you will gain even more skills and confidence in the ocean by dedicating time and effort, and with deliberate practice.

The icing on the cake: Most of this ocean time is in the Marino Ballena National Park, Central America's first marine protected area, and a gorgeous and untouched region of Costa Rica. The water is clean and warm, the views of mountains reaching the ocean are impeccable, and there is space to learn this new skill with freedom and ease!

Why is it important to learn how to bodysurf?

There is no easier way to build this foundation of ocean savvy amongst students than by teaching them how to bodysurf. Bodysurfing is not only a pleasurable and unique method of riding waves, but an essential precursor to all other forms of board-surfing.

It's something that will teach you how to maintain your cool in the ocean if you should find yourself in an emergency situation — say, floating in deep water without a board after a broken leash situation. In week two, you will reap the benefits of your first week of investment, and continue on with Bodhi Sessions adult surf and yoga camp!

Sample week 1 schedule

Note that this is just a sample schedule, as exact times of activities are subject to change. The ocean component of their schedule requires them to change it weekly, around the tides and wave conditions.

Day 1 - Saturday

Typically, guests arrive on Saturday at any time on the first Saturday of camp at the Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO) in San Jose, Costa Rica.

The first night of lodging (Saturday) is at a hotel near the airport, and is included in the camp. Transportation to the hotel is included, provided by the hotel itself. Dinner on the first night is on your own. You can dine at the delicious hotel restaurant, or go to a nearby restaurant.

After your long day of travel, you will likely want to get to bed early to rest up and prepare for your first full day of Bodhi Awaken!

Day 2 - Sunday

You may have your first breakfast in Costa Rica at the hotel restaurant whenever it opens. They recommend the traditional Tico or Costa Rican breakfast, called Gallo Pinto with a nice cup of coffee.

You and the other guests will be picked up by Bodhi Surf and Yoga’s private transportation service, Wali Rider, at 9 am. Together, you will make the 4 to 4.5 hour journey to Bahia Ballena – Uvita, Osa, Uvita, and the home of Bodhi Surf and Yoga.

You will arrive at Bodhi Surf and Yoga and be welcomed by members and receive a tour of the lodge and property, and see the schedule is for the week to come. You may go out to a local restaurant for your first lunch, or go to the store to purchase some groceries to prepare food on your own.

Dinner the first night is included: Guests and Bodhi staff will go out to a local restaurant and get further acquainted and chat with your fellow campers and staff about what you are most looking to get out of the week!

Day 3 - Monday

Mondays start with an early breakfast of locally sourced fresh fruit, coffee, banana bread, and eggs.

Following that, there will be a Community Walking Tour of Bahia Ballena with a trained local guide. This activity is a great way for guests to learn about the local community and get some insider perspectives, see some of the local flora and fauna, and learn the general “lay of the land”.

Expect to see some of the local flora (and maybe even fauna), and maybe even finish with a local snack or drink!

After returning to home base, there is a little break before the first yoga class at the onsite Bodhi Shambala Yoga studio. Next up, take a stroll to the local supermarket to stock up on snacks and meal stuff or go out for lunch at a nearby restaurant.

In the afternoon, you will head down to the Marino Ballena National Park for your first bodysurf session. Once there, your instructors will provide you with some history and information about the park, including a brief discussion about where you are going to be spending the next few weeks! You will learn some swim techniques to get you prepped for your week of bodysurfing. Then, you will dive in both literally and figuratively!

Monday night is unscheduled so everyone is welcome to do their own thing. Head to a local restaurant or make something simple to eat before relaxing in the hammock or playing some games before an early bed.

Day 4 - Tuesday

Tuesday is day two of bodysurfing! You will start the morning off right with some coffee and a banana before piling into the surf mobile to head down to Playa Chaman for your second bodysurf lesson.

After spending two hours frolicking in the warm, tropical waters, you will head back to Bodhi Surf and Yoga to satisfy your newfound appetite with a delicious home-cooked breakfast.

Whether snoozing in a hammock or cooling off by the pool, you will want to spend some time relaxing and digesting breakfast before heading to the local Uvita waterfall.

You can grab a cool beverage and some lunch at the restaurant located near the entrance of the waterfall before being transported back to the Bodhi Lodge in the late afternoon. Just before sunset, you will head up to the yoga platform to enjoy a much-needed yoga session.

After limbering up throughout the course of the yoga class, you will want to shower before another delicious Bodhi dinner. That evening, you will be enjoying a bodysurf movie to get further stoked about this delightful sport.

Day 5 - Wednesday

By Wednesday, you are going to be so into the way of life in the tropics that you rise, bright and early, with the sun and the sounds of local animals such as roosters, howler monkeys, and what Bodhi staff call “funky chickens”.

You know the drill by now: An invigorating yoga class is up next — much-needed class after two days of physical activity! After you float down the stairs of the yoga platform and over to the common area, enjoy some local coffee or fruit juice, a delicious home-cooked breakfast, and conversation with fellow guests and staff.

After breakfast, you will return to the beach for your third bodysurf lesson, where you will continue perfecting your wave-sliding abilities. Have a nap, read a book, hang out in the pool. The world (and the afternoon) is your oyster.

After that, you are free to do your own thing for the rest of the day and night. Wednesday is also free, so guests are most often found going out for a meal at one of the nearby restaurants. Massages are an optional add-on for anyone who is feeling the burn of the last few days!

Day 6 - Thursday

A lovely morning yoga is the first activity of the day, an an opportunity to limber up for the events to follow. You will enjoy a delicious and filling breakfast (fruit, coffee, and perhaps even the Costa Rican favorite, Gallo Pinto) followed by some chill time at the lodge.

Your bodysurf lesson of the day will be in the afternoon, so after learning and practicing your skills (perhaps even paddling out into the green waves if the conditions allow), enjoy a beautiful sunset on Playa Chaman. It is the last dinner (and night!) at the Bodhi Lodge, so enjoy it up. Maybe even instigate a dance party with your fellow campers!

Or conversely, head to bed early to rest up, because your last bodysurf lesson is the following morning!

Day 7 - Friday

Today is the day! All of the skills and knowledge that you acquired throughout the week will be put to the test during the fourth and final bodysurf lesson at Playa Chaman.

After this successful ocean outing, you will return to Bodhi for breakfast. Lastly, breakfast will be followed with a closing ceremony held by Hannah and Spencer to reflect on the transformative week of bodysurfing, and set the tone for the upcoming week of board-surfing and yoga.

After this wrap-up, you will be given the rest of the day off to soak it all in and gear up for another incredible week at the Bodhi lodge!

Day 8 - Saturday

Saturday is a free day — this is your only full free day, so be sure to have an activity scheduled ahead of time if you have something specific you want to do. Otherwise, perhaps some chilling and beach time are in order!

Day 9 - Sunday

In the early afternoon, the next crew of guests will be arriving for the late lunch / Bodhi premises if you want to join. If not, you are more than welcome to wait until the evening’s dinner at Bodhi to meet everyone!

In the afternoon, the whole crew heads down to the beach for the first surf lesson of the week. Sunday night is free, so everyone typically does their own thing, whether heading to a local restaurant or making something simple to eat before relaxing in the hammock or playing some games before bed!

Week 2: Topping it off with surfing and yoga

On the second week of the retreat, guests transition into the pinnacle surf and yoga camp - Bodhi Sessions. With the ocean savvy developed in the first week of the retreat, transitioning onto a board will be more seamless and effective than if they were to just "dive in".

Everything from their tried and tested 5-session surf curriculum is included, simply with the added benefit of the previous week's ocean experience. And to top it all off, the 5-session Bodhi yoga curriculum that is designed to do so much more than stretch, but to go deeper into the self utilizing the breath, physical postures, and yoga philosophy.

Side effects of this entire 2-week retreat may include: Inspiration to become environmental stewards, motivation to continue physical activity, and the desire to live purposefully!

Excursions

Lieu du séjour

Uvita is a small town located on the Southern Pacific coast of Costa Rica, a 3.5-hour drive from the capital city, San Jose. Although the area is much less developed than the Nicoya Peninsula, it is gaining more and more popularity among tourists who come to see its gorgeous natural beauty, experience the “Pura Vida” way of life, and get away from the crowds.

Bahia Ballena is commonly grouped with Uvita (people will refer to it as Bahia Ballena - Uvita) because each town is small and they are across the river from one another. Here, you can enjoy the beach and slow pace of life in Bahia Ballena, and the conveniences of the more populated town of Uvita.

The Bodhi Surf and Yoga lodge is located approximately one mile / 1.8 kilometers (15-20 minutes walking-distance) from either the Punta Uvita (Whale Tail) or Playa Chaman (Bodhi Surf and Yoga's bodysurf beach) park entrances. For bodysurf lessons, you drive all together, which takes about 5 minutes.

Restaurants

There are many restaurants in the Bahia Ballena - Uvita area, with several delicious options within a 10-minute walk. There are approximately 20-25 restaurants in the immediate walking distance (20 minutes or under) from the Bodhi Surf + Yoga lodge. There are also more places to eat popping up every year.

If you don't feel like walking, you can also look into renting a bike or opt to take a taxi. If you opt to take a taxi anywhere (in 20 minutes or under), the number of restaurants available goes up greatly.

Many opt to have a snack (such as a fruit smoothie) or a light meal (like a salad, chips and bean dip, or yogurt and fruit) in the afternoon when temperatures reach their peak.
