Mary Susan Stults
Mary Susan has been practicing yoga for 17 years. As an avid outdoor enthusiast, you can often find this nature lover hiking or biking on a trail, paddling, surfing, or practicing yoga on the water, camping in the mountains or desert, or exploring her yoga practice outdoors! Mary Susan has taught Yoga for all-ages, family, adaptive, teens, tweens, kids, and tots since early 2011, and is a certified 1000+HR RYT Yoga & Meditation teacher, a WPA/Paddle Into Fitness Certified Stan Up Paddleboarding (SUP) and SUP Yoga teacher, certified Kids Yoga teacher, certified Adaptive Yoga teacher.
Shawn's love and longing to be around water started at a very young age. His passion for water has taken him many places as a river guide, kayaker, fly fisher, triathlete, and scuba diver. He discovered SUP ten years ago and fell in love instantly as it is the perfect way to discover new bodies of water, get a total body workout, and become grounded while finding peace and balance. Most importantly, SUP allows you to capture that aloha spirit even when the ocean is far from sight. In 2012, Shawn’s passion for SUP and building community led him to found and establish Rocky Mountain Paddleboard.
This retreat will take place in Aruba, a tiny Dutch Caribbean island off the coast of Venezuela. Aruba has a dry, sunny weather, blond white-sand beaches, and gentle surf. Constant trade winds keep things cool and cause the divi-divi trees to slope southwesterly. European influence shows in both its architecture, in which Dutch gables mingle with tropical pastels and language, with English, Dutch, and Spanish spoken alongside the local tongue, Papiamento.
Located 15 miles north of Venezuela in the warm waters of the southern Caribbean, Aruba is home to beautiful white-sand beaches, 82-degree days, and some of the warmest people in the world. The island is 19.6 miles long and six miles across, with a total area of 70 square miles. Aruba's located just below the hurricane belt, and unlike many islands in the Caribbean, the climate is dry, so a rainy day is rare.
On the south and west coasts of Aruba, you’ll find Oranjestad, the capital city, and miles of beaches that have been named some of the best in the world. Here, you’ll find most of the hotels and all-inclusive resorts in Aruba, and Queen Beatrix International Airport (AUA).
In the interior of the island, you’ll find Arikok National Park, a desert like preserve with a variety of wildlife, cacti and dramatic rock formations. You’ll also find some of Aruba’s most striking views, as the ocean crashes against the rugged shoreline below. On the northeast coast, along the windward shore, you’ll see the island’s unofficial mascots, the fofoti trees. The constant trade winds have permanently sculpted them into graceful, southwesterly bending forms.
Fringing turquoise Caribbean waters, Aruba’s beaches include wide shaded expanses, quiet retreats, and busy sunbathing and water sports meccas. Much of the seven-mile strip along the west coast is lined with resorts and packed with activity. Beachgoers relax on their comfortable lounges while swimming, snorkeling, kite surfing, waterskiing, tubing, parasailing, and banana-boating. All kinds of wet and wild adventures are just steps away.
In contrast, the beaches along the windward coast are in more secluded and undeveloped areas. There are coves carved out of limestone, inlets formed by pounding waves, unique natural phenomena, and craggy desert terrain. Because of strong undertow and crashing waves, swimming here is not recommended. Both coasts afford spectacular Caribbean views. All beaches are open to the public.
Get into the spirit of Aruba’s biggest party of the year, a month-long celebration with festive street parties known as “jump-ups” and spectacular parades. Lovelies of all ages strut their stuff at Carnival Queen elections, competing for the coveted crown.
Aruba Carnivals events are remembered for their powerful music. Winning songs selected at carnival competitions in Aruba include the best calypso with politically-charged lyrics and social commentaries, and the best road march with catchy lyrics and melodies and movements all perform together.
During this retreat, you will be served three daily meals. Water and tea are also included.
